Guys like Tony Dungy and Bill Bellachik are defensive coaches and yet they win games with Offense when they have to. They coach their entire teams. If kubiak truly ignores the defense and is not in control of what goes on, then he is not much of a coach.

I'll sign a "Fire Rick Smith" petition, but I blame the head coach most for what happens on his team.
I agree with you completely, but at least Kubiak has one side of the team going. I'm more or less saying what I think the thought process will be of McNair. I don't think he's given a choice when it comes to Smith's job, and told that if the defense doesn't improve he's out.

I don't really think that a new DC is going to make a dramatic immediate difference either, but I think the offense has shown enough signs of being really good to keep Kubiak around.

Dungy's a defensive coach, but he also got a great offensive coordinator, and has kept him around. The Indy defense has been their weak point, but they win....and that's all that will matter at the end of the day. I think Kubiak's going to need some wins down the stretch to keep his job.
