Default The Dreaded Vote of Confidence

McNair spoke today

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/team/HOU

Dec. 16, 2010 3:16 p.m. - Owner Bob McNair indicated there will be changes on the coaching staff next season, but he did not address whether he has plans of retaining coach Gary Kubiak. "We'll review everything at the end of the year," McNair said. "Will we make changes? I'm sure we will."

Dec. 16, 2010 3:30 p.m. - Owner Bob McNair said he received a great deal of praise from his peers at Wednesday's owners meeting in Dallas on the team's 21-point comeback Monday. "I was overwhelmed," McNair said. "They said it was one of the most impressive comebacks they had ever seen."

28 minutes ago - Owner Bob McNair on whether laudatory comments from fellow owners that the Texans are on the verge of breaking through will impact his decision to retain coach Gary Kubiak: "It's an affirmation that we're on the right track, but clearly we have to do better."

Vote of confidences mean nothing during the middle of the season.

I think we can take McNair at face value and that means Kubiak/Smith will get one more crack next season. Assuming that is true they better go all in: new defensive coordinator with a good track record (preferably one with head coaching experience in case things go awry and we need an interim audition) , spend money in free agency, and be aggressive in the draft.

When the headcoach was Kubs and the OC was baby Shanny (remember?), we had one of the best offenses in the NFL. But we couldn't run the ball worth a flip. Now we have Rick Dennison as the OC. We are not as good passing, but we have the league leader in RB in Arian Foster. That doesn't exactly make me nauseus, BUT the DC is Frank Bush and we have the second worst defense in the league. THAT does make me a little sick.

Mr. McNair has tried to run this team like a business and thats OK for the front office. The difference is you can't do that with coaches and players. You have to have someone with a certain visceral ability to judge their worth and whether to go out and get 'em and pay 'em a fantastic amount of money. These are the few and the most successful. I couldn't give you a better example than Bill Pollian of the Colts, or Bill Bellicek of the Patriots. now how do you go about getting someone like that? I won't hazard a guess but I hope we get lucky this time around. This long suffering town and fans richly deserves it.

I'm very sorry, friend, but the Houston fans don't deserve shit. They have sold out a stadium that houses a terrible and very occasionally mediocre franchise for nine years running. The fans do not demand accountability; they keep buying tickets and buying god knows what once they get into the stadium. They buy merchandise outside the stadium. Very much like government, you get the team you deserve. Houston fans, and I of course count myself in the vanguard here, are saps and idiots and have been completely hoodwinked and brainwashed

We'll see how many change their tune after an offseason where the headline regards the changing of the DC, same HC, same GM, and another year of no top FAs brought in.

"Middle of the season" ? Actually I think the season is MOL over now after the MNF loss to the Ravens. Only 3 games left with no hopes (again !) for a playoff berth, we're basically in 2011 preseason mode.
But with all of the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming season with nothing settled at this point on the CBA and all, this is mainly a business decision IMO. If we do have a 2011 season, it could be very abbreviated ?

Fans tried the opposite approach and it gave us the Tennessee Titans.

Suits the shit out of me. Think of all the time and money and emotional anguish I would have saved if Tagliabue had given the franchise to the vacuous phonies in southern California.

I hear ya, but I sure felt a void when there was no NFL team in Houston. I hoped having an NFL team without Bud Adams would be the cure. It might yet be but hasn't happened yet. Some say the ground around the Astrodome/Reliant is cursed. Given the sometimes excruciating way our teams have lost there, it does make me wonder a bit.

I called in to one of the radio shows this week (couldn't tell you which one), because I'd heard a good 4 callers in a row bitching and moaning about how they'd been season ticket holders for 4, 5, 7 years and were tired of losing, but all said that they were renewing their tickets for next year. This was my first year to have season tickets, and if this vote of confidence can be taken at face value, it was also my last. I told them I'll still watch the games on tv at the pub, I'll wear my gear (it's really a substantial chunk of my wardrobe), but I won't spend one red cent on the team until I feel the organization is handling its business, and I was both lambasted and lauded. Chuck's right. We don't deserve any better, because the bottom line doesn't change. I was appalled at MNF in the first half. It was as if we were on offense the entire time. There were honestly multiple moments on defense when I was literally the ONLY one IN MY ENTIRE SECTION making any noise whatsoever. Our fans blow, our coach can't gameplan his way into spring break pussy (easiest thing I could think of), and the owner thinks at 5-8 he's doing a great job. I love my team, but I must've been a rapist or a murderer or whoever the guy is that invented the stage musical in a past life to deserve this shit.

And so it is, I'll still run my mouth in my gear at the sports bar; I'm still gonna tivo and archive every game we play; I'm not taking off the Texans stickers on my battle red truck (well, it's close); but I'm absolutely not giving the organization another dime of my hard earned cash without legitimate changes coming down. Period. That's that.

SBB - Hell I can't say as I blame you, or Chuck either. We have been the most crapped upon fans in the NFL. But we still could luck into that one coach and/or GM that is going to propel us into the big one. Fat chance you say, but if the hapless Indianapolis Colts of the '80s & '90s could do it, and MOST important - if the New Orleans Saints, of all the teams, could do it, so can we say I. Sure I have been saying/hoping this for over 50 years now, but I will always continue to hope.

The dreaded part is McNair more than likely believes what he says and really is giving Rubiak and the team a vote of confidence. The longer we go the more this guy is showing how much a buffoon he is. Look, I'm grateful he brought the NFL back to Houston, but come on, the guy is coming across like he has no frickin clue that he's providing a horrible product. Either that, or he doesn't care. I can't tell which at this point...

Since he seems to place so much stock in it, any chance McNair can get the other owners on a conference call today to see what they have to say about the Texans effort yesterday?
