So basically we gave nothing gauranteed to a guy who may or may not be better than our 5th/6th CB. He may or may not make the team depending on injury recovery, franchised CBs, unknown rookies, and how he plays the next week or so.

So what doesn't make sense about the signing? I can't understand signing a street FA to ever be bad unless you are cutting someone who may be valuable (and we cut nobody). It is no risk and small reward.
The guy is not a good special teamer, he was cut because he shied away from contact. I'm sorry I do not see him being better than our 7th or 8th best CB.

Dunta and Reeves are the two starters. Bennett and Molden should be the back ups. McCain and Quinn have had to much tape to be assured they clear waivers.

That is 6 guys, how many CBs are you carrying? Matterral Richardson, and David Pittman have had decent camps and then add less than a week of O'Neal.

In all my time of following football, I do not remember to many cases of a guy being added to the roster a week before final cutdowns and that guy making the team.

So if your conclusion is he won't make the team, then why is it a bad signing? We get 80 spots and it would be dumb to not use them all until we are required to make cuts. We have nothing invested in the guy and our coaches get to take a look at one more guy. No downside there.

Oh sure, it happens, but maybe moreso when a team adds a player cut from another team... Gordon sort of applies in this scenario, but since he was let go before the mandatory cutdown, maybe not.

Guys like Eugene Wilson, Rashad Butler, and Jason Bell if you go way back might qualify as players signed/claimed for keeps after camp was over.

I get both points though. Why bother with the hassle to sign a guy this late if he's likely gonna be cut anyway? I think because Gordon has a chance of not getting cut. With Dunta predictable rusty and Reeves out for week 1, that last bubble spot on the final 53 could go to an extra corner.

I'm guessing Gordon ought to play a decent amount against the Bucs (though I think Bennett, Molden, Quin, and McCain need all the reps they can get), and his old team must have seen something in him at some point to tender him what they did. As for playing O'Neal or signing Law, well... I'm guessing this has something to say about what Rick Smith thinks of them in the year 2009.

Watching the waiver wire during the cut downs is a different animal. And during the season you can find gems.

Now that was a real "Flash", as in Gordon is gone before he could unpack his bags? Or did he ever even show up?

Almost as fast of an exit as Chan Gailey's.

That was fast.

All i can think is he had some conditioning/attitude issues, hence the reasons the Chargers let go of him, or the recent comments about Reeves making a possible Game 1 appearance are more than enthusiasm. It could also mean there has been some communication with DRob and he will appear within the next day or so.

It is also possible that he was just a camp body, but it seems very very odd.

or maybe this is a way to help him find another team more quickly since he fairly obviously wasn't one of our top 7 choices for CB.
