Default Kubiak is Staying Per McNair

Not a huge surpirse, to be honest, I don't think today's win was the whole shebang, but it certainly helped him making this public, this quickly.

From the Chronic:
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...t/6796978.html

Owner Bob McNair said after Sunday's 34-27 victory over New England that coach Gary Kubiak will return for his fifth season.

McNair said last month that he didn't want to make a change because change would be disruptive and that he would wait until after the season to evaluate Kubiak.

The season ended Sunday with a 9-7 record and a four-game winning streak.

"Gary's my coach," McNair said after the game. "I know there was speculation that he might not be, but he is. He'll definitely be back. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be.

"The team matured today. It was a great victory for us."

McNair also said last month that he thought the Texans had a better chance of being a better team in 2010 with Kubiak than a new coach.

"Look at the conditions he coached under, all the injuries," McNair said. "I like Gary for a lot of reasons. He's got a great offensive mind. He has a great sense of how to push players and when to back off. He also doesn't play favorites. He treats players the same, and they respect him for it."

I think this was a good decision to keep Kubiak.

He and team have improved continously this past four years. They are now in position to win almost every game.

The win today with the fourth quarter comeback over New England was very satisfying. And gives us hope for the future.

Let's get a game-management guy as an assistant.

He needs to focus on the pass rush, running game and short-yardage/goal-line offense. Had those been even slightly better we would have made the playoffs. Oh yeah... And get rid of Chris Brown and Kris Brown, PLEASE!!!

So Kubiak is staying, not much of a surprise regardless of Sunday's outcome.

The next drama though will be whether Kubiak enters the 2010 as a lame duck or whether McNair extends his contract. I think a one-year contract extension before the FA and draft process begins in earnest would be appropriate.

I'd make him earn it. Playoffs in your 5th year or take a hike. Kubiak can't even beat his own division. The last game of his 4th season doesn't change the fact that he has been mediocre. Spin it how you want but no excuses in year 5. And no extension until late enough in the season to know where this team is headed.
