Does anyone ever think about how many RBs careers were ruined by playing for the Texans?
James Allen Jonathan Wells Stacey Mack Domanick Davis Ahman Green Chris Brown (just a prediction) I'm sure there are a few others I left out... That seems like more than our fair share. Some of those backs were decent before they joined our team. I know our line and offensive system/coordinator are better now, but it's still interesting. |

Carreers ruined? Harsh words. But Dominick Davis, Ahman Green, and Chris Brown have all been damn well compensated. So you could truthfully say, both sides lost!

Careers ruined? Hardly. Most of them were older backs at or very near the end of the NFL careers before they ever came to the Texans. They were picked up in most cases because of their experience and in particular their experience picking up the blitz as our O-line was less than effective at holding guys off the QB. The most notable exception to this was Dominic Davis. Because the offense was so anemic and the passing game fraught with uncertainty, with Dom able to generate some yardage he was perhaps over used for a back of his size. It's always hard to say if a guy would have had the same health issues if used less when it is the knee that's the issue. And all the others were very well compensated, particularly when you factor in that they were at the end of their careers.

James Allen- Had one decent season out of 5 with the Bears. Was only in Houston one year and put up his second highest rushing total...a grand total of 519 yards. I can't see how we hurt his career
Jonathan Wells-his career basically consisted of his time in Houston. He never lived up to his potential. I guess you could blame it on the team around him, but other backs outperformed him with the same team. Stacey Mack-Never really more than a big short yardage back. He was on the way down when he got here. Domanick Davis-Had some good years here. Got a decent pay day out of it too as a reward. Injuries is what stopped him. Maybe he was overused a little, but it was not the type of workload that should end a career that quick. Ahman Green- Was on the downside of his career coming off injuries when he got here. Chris Brown (just a prediction)-has had injury problems his entire career I'm sure there are a few others I left out... That's just the nature of the beast when it comes to RB. It only takes a few years with a moderate work load to really wear down the body. There's a reason they have the shortest careers of any position. I don't think we do anything to help that along. Just early on we were so desperate for decent players we were willing to give other teams back-ups and cast offs a starting job. We've taken a couple of risk on higher caliber veteran backs here recently, but they were damaged when we got them.

If you look at the talent we have had at RB then it is obvious that Houston has been a spot for RBs to overachieve rather than a place to underachieve. Of all the guys you mentioned only one played healthy and didn't look his best, and that was Mack (and he was beaten out by DD, the king of the overachievers). The rest either peaked here, were hurt, or were never good in the first place.
You are grasping big time. |

Hard to ruin a career if there's very little talent (or left in the tank) to build a 'career', but anyway...

Darius Walker as well
and Ron Dayne I was just wondering if there is a statistic like team player turnover from year to year versus winning record. Last edited by Nconroe; 06-04-2009 at 08:25 PM. |

I heard somewhere, can not remember where, but Davis knew about the knee issue in college. It was degenerative, and it was compounded by the over use/style of runner he was.

Some of those careers ended before they got here. Or should have.
