Default Good News Kubiak!!

we're going to do some of your "evaluation" for you...

05-31st ranked Defense
1st in points given up per game (26.9)
2nd in yards given up per game (364)
1st in yards given up per play (5.8)
16th against 3rd downs (38% complete)
2nd against 4th downs (65% complete)

travis johnson and dunta are not enough to keep this log floating? fair enough. add mario and demeco.

06-24th ranked Defense
7th in points given up per game (22.9)
9th in yards given up per game (337)
5th in yards given up per play (5.5)
3rd against 3rd downs (44% complete)
22nd against 4th downs (46% complete)

richard smith's defense shows improvement from absolute bottom of the barrel to just plain bad. still not enough talent...add amobi, demps and fred bennett

07-24th ranked Defense
10th in points given up per game (24)
9th in yards given up per game (344.2)
6th in yards given up per play (5.5)
10th against 3rd downs (42% complete)
18th against 4th downs (50% complete)

i guess we're expecting something big from molden, barber, okam or adibi even though they mostly don't play a single damn down.

08-25th ranked Defense
3rd in points given up per game (33)
8th in yards given up per game (341)
8th in yards given up per play (5.7)
3rd against 3rd downs (49% complete)
1st against 4ths downs (100% complete)

sure, the 08 stats will even out a bit over 16...but this defense isn't showing the kind of marked improvement that will pull them out of the cellar. and certainly talent has been added, but the numbers all show a slight dip in performance. evalutations?

i mean as far as evaluations go, if this isn't screaming "FIRE RICHARD SMITH" then nothing is, nothing has and nothing will. frankly, if kubiak can't see that ~and sometime pretty soon~ while having at least 2 better options, probably 3 ON STAFF then it's time for kubiak to leave.

changing over DC at this point isn't going to doom our defense for the rest of the year. the current scheme, however, dooms us to 24th. the worst defense that was in the playoffs last year was the 15th ranked seattle seahawks D. marginal improvement won't even get us to paydirt, we need lots of something different...

Not a Richard Smith apologist at at all. In fact I strongly support bringing is Marvin Lewis. However this D is not going to improve until we get better at DT and OLB and get a DE with some speed. We need to throw the bank at Albert Haynesworth next year.

The team released Aaron Glenn (getting nothing in return - he's still in the league by the way) at the end of 2004. That paired with the insane Phillip Buchanon trade was clearly the beginning of the end for a very young franchise. Not even the heroic selection of Mario Williams could possibly save a defense so wounded by perverse personnel decisions.

I would argue that the fiasco that was David Carr is considerably less relevant to the team's retarded development than the idiotic personnel moves that were made on the defensive side of the ball.

If you recall, thanks to the Xspantion Draft we really started out with a fairly descent defense. Seth Payne @ nose and Gary Walker at one DE made for a solid group of DLinemen in the Capers 3-4. And Sharper was an excellent inside backer with Coleman & Glenn (especially Aaron) and we had the nucleus for a good little 3-4 D.
I dunno why Capers & Fangio (I think that was his D cooardinator?) had so much trouble coming up with even one really good OLB to rush from the edge ? Obviously the Babin pick was another mistake. They were supposed to be the 3-4 gurus, right ? But they never could find that one really good pass-rusher, that tweener from the college ranks who made it big as a 3-4 OLB.
But a second & third-rounder for P-Burnt. WOW !

If you remember what Capers did in Carolina you can see it was similar in Houston. Built a veteran defense designed to be competitive for about two years and the rest is history.

The same mistake was made though of replacing those very capable veterans. So you have to change certain elements of the formula otherwise you can only progress so far.

If you keep putting too much syrup on your pancakes you can only eat so much, right? So next time what should you do?
