I hope we can pay him long term. He's earned it and your 4th year in the league is a fair time to expect a new deal. He is making $1 million this year as one of the best WRs in the league. I also hope we can sign him as cheap as possible for as long as possible for the team's sake. Hopefully giving him a new deal 2 years before we're forced to gives us the leverage to make him a millionaire many times over while still having a team friendly deal. |

Have they got the cap room to do this if they want to without needing to approach other players to restructure contracts ? |

I think they have plenty cap space , and time to do a deal with Hopkins anyways. Get 'er done Rick. You got your deal, now do this.

According to Over The Cap, the Texans have $11 million left in the cupboard. Hopkins' base salary is $1 million but he's also making $981,673 in pro-rated signing bonus and $445,000 in roster bonus money so his actual pay this year is over $2.25 million. Not bad but not Kareem Jackson money.
Since we drafted Fuller and Miller, the easiest way to pay Hopkins is simply to cut Cecil Shorts - he has a $1.2 million salary but only $200K is guaranteed. We lose the $500K pro-rated bonus but keep the $800K roster bonus for a cap savings of $1.75 million. Give that money to D-Hop and he's now getting paid $4 million while Cecil takes it in the shorts. We still have four receivers better than he is (arguably) so he won't be missed. http://overthecap.com/calculator/houston-texans/ |

On an unrelated note, the NFLPA is an embarrassment and the 5th year option is one of the worst examples. Watching awful baseball players (Carl Crawford) and Basketball Players (Joe Johnson) get paid tens of millions to go away has got to make the football guys furious. Of course, if the NFLPA was filled with smart players they would be winning those labor battles, not going broke immediately after retirement. The players ought to sign only with agents who will be smart for them. |

DeAndre Hopkins is returning to the Houston Texans.
One day after choosing not to report to training camp, the star wideout is ending his brief holdout, a source close to the player told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Hopkins on Sunday announced his change of heart via a statement provided to Rapoport: "I, too, am disappointed that the Texans' organization has elected not to enter into contract negotiations to secure my future as a Texan. I have expressed my sincere position regarding my contract status and I, too, with sound mind have expressed my stance to the Texans' organization. My focus also is on the 2016 season and help my team reach our ultimate goal. Having said that I am returning to the Houston Texans to play for a Super Bowl in Houston, Texas. I will be holding a 12 noon Monday press conference at Reliant Stadium. I am excited about returning to the team and grind this camp." ============================ This is what you get when you pay the white boy $17 million when he hasn't done anything. A certain amount of resentment sets in. Must say, this is a good move by Hopkins to make his point and then come back to work. Yes, he's grossly underpaid but the longer he plays this out, the more likely he'll get a big payday in his future - after declaring for free agency and signing with the Panthers. |

I doubt that Nuk cares that the team's quarterback is banking. I'm pretty sure he does care that Will Fuller is going to make more money this year.

I think most guys are happy when others get paid also. They are unhappy when others get paid and they don't.
I am sure Hopkins is fine with the Texans paying Brock like a starting QB (which is what he is), as long as they pay Hopkins like a star WR (which he is). I guess what I am saying is I am sure Hopkins would be just as unhappy with his $1 million salary no matter what the other guys were or were not making. |
