Default Derrick Mason - The Newest Texan WR

Per Jabba - Traded for a conditional pick.
@McClain_on_NFL: Texans trade a condt'l draft pick to NYJ for WR Derrick Mason

Can't see him as a field stretcher anymore, but definitely a chain mover that runs decent routes.

I saw the other day he was complaining about the offense and they thought Rex might cut him to make an example. With our wr situation I immediately thought we may sign him if it happened. As long as it is a 6th/7th type of pick I am for it. We can't afford to hold back with how open things are this year.

Seeing reports of a Conditional 7th round pick for Mason, per source. #Jets

IMHO - This certainly can't hurt us, provided he knows his role, and keeps his mouth shut. This is a very un-Texan like move....

I kinda like that.

This is interesting on several levels.

- Roster-wise: Probably a bad sign for what the team thinks of Jacoby Jones, David Anderson, and/or Bryant Johnson.
- Health-wsie: Hopefully this says nothing about the injury status of Andre Johnson.
- Upcoming Opponent-wise: Mason, while most recently of the Jets, was a long-time Raven, and Baltimore is next on the schedule.
- Oiler-wise: Unless I am mistaken, Mason is the last current player who wore an Oiler uniform (not as a throwback), albeit as a Tennessee Oiler.

If he can get Schaub to pass more accurately I'm all forit. Welcome aboard Derrick.

I'm almost afraid to say I like this trade, but boy do we need some help there.

I really want to see what he can do on this team, esp. against his old team, as long as Matt doesn't turn into a turtle after the first time he's hit.

Otherwise, I'd probably have more fun poking a dead squirrel than watching another Texans debacle.

Bryant's probably the odd man out, but I think this trade is more about JJ and his lack of basic WR skills than it is about finding a temporary fill-in for AJ. I honestly think they did it with the mindset of having a year-long upgrade to JJ once AJ comes back. Mason's obviously not what he used to be, but at least he can catch the damn ball, run precise routes and stretch the field a bit more than Walter/Daniels/Dressen/Casey.

There's a rumor on twitter that they're about to sign Juaquin Iglesias pending a physical.

Looks like they waived Obi to create a spot for Mason.
@caplannfl: Texans waived RB Chris Ogbonnaya. Sign that the other injured RBs are on the mend.

I would assume/expect, another move once AJ returns to the line-up.

Looks like Rick Smith initiated the conversation:

Oct. 12, 2011 12:44 p.m. - by Lisa Zimmerman - Texans' phone call led to WR Mason trade
GM Mike Tannenbaum said that had Houston not called them, WR Derrick Mason would still be with the Jets. However, he said, "Suffice it to say (Mason) didn't play at the level he had hoped and we had hoped." Jets RapidReports

according to this they need a healthy WR and they found one

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/ar...0-976e054058a9

..
"We’ve played maybe two-and-a-half games with three healthy wide receivers, so it’s really been scary from that standpoint," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "We had a chance to go get a guy that still runs very well even though he’s played a long time in this league. He’s been very effective in this league. We feel like we can catch him up real fast, so that was a big key."

Don't you know the Ravens are watching our game film with the RAiders and just licking their chops! If the Oline doesn't give Schaub the time he needs (in the neighborhood of 4 sec.), he will give it up everytime. And Foster couldn't even run the ball. I know the Raiders have a good defense, but we make them look all world.

maybe the raiders did find the key to beating the texans' offensive line, but before we start worrying that they are going from pretty darn good, to terrible, let's give it another few games. nobody has great, or even good, games every week (see baltimore getting BEATEN by tennessee a few weeks ago). hopefully they will bounce back. i am not saying that the texans oline will dominate the ravens, but i am not ready to say they are falling apart after one game when they have done a pretty good job of protecting schaub for the past 2 years, and they did help foster win the rushing title last year.

Texans Oline was getting props from Ross Tucker on one of his podcasts. He was saying that our Oline was doing a great job that he thought at least one of those guys deserved to be in the Pro Bowl. Now all of a sudden they're terrible because of one bad game?... I don't think so. We're gonna win this game.

I don't think they are terrible at all. I think they protected better in the 1st half when we at least tried to run the ball. When we abandoned the running game was when Schaub really got killed.

Plus it's one game. And the Raiders, while not great on Defense are very big on the DL. I think that size can create matchup problems for us sometimes. Pittsburgh is better against the run but we gouged them. Who knows maybe we were just completely not ready to play last week.

it appears that David Anderson was cut also.

Yepper, saw that after the fact. Don't recall in the past 10 years this much activity in-season for the boys on Kirby. Most are lower levels moves, little risk that could be solid rewards.

Exchanging a Derrick Mason for David Anderson is an absolute no brainer in my eyes. Don't know what the "conditions" are for the trade, but in either case, the Jets dumped him, and we picked up the balance of his contract, which without a signing bonus amounts to not much more than league minimum.

Hey guys, I'm not down on the Oline, but they were either outplayed or outcoached in the Raiders game. Bennet needs to get them better prepared if they expect to have a chance against the Ravens. Schaub is so immobile that if he doesn't get his time to throw, even by buying time by rolling out to his left, he is prone to giving it up, and that scares me.

From Schefter's twitter:
Jets traded Derrick Mason for an If pick. If Mason catches 33 or more passes for Texans, Jets get a 7. If he doesn't, they get nothing.

Hmmmm, maybe AJ is not too far off.
Trade ended up not costing us a dime.

Source: Texans cut Derrick Mason
by Aaron Wilson of Scout.com, December 12, 2011 at 3:24 pm ET

Derrick Mason Profile

The Houston Texans have cut veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason today, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Mason is a two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver.

He was cut by the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets previously this year.

The Texans need the roster spot to bolster their special teams.
