Default News on Big Nasty

No one dislikes Richard Justice more than I do, but occasionally he does a good story and i have to give him props when he does.

Charles Spencer is trying one more time to get back into the NFL. Oh what a might have been.

Justice's problem started when the Chron downsized. He used to be a baseball guy, but now he has to be an expert on things he doesn't know or care much about.

I thought it was an excellent article about Spencer, I hope he gets a fair shot at returning to football and his life works out well, sounds like he is doing ok.

One thing missing is that Spencer played last season in the United Football League for the Tampa Bay Tuskers, not the NFL but still football.

Thought that should have been mentioned.

Texans to give former OT Spencer a tryout
By JOHN McCLAIN
Aug. 21, 2010, 7:22PM

Former Texans offensive tackle Charles Spencer, who has been out of football because of a badly broken leg he suffered as a rookie in 2006, is getting a tryout with the team Sunday.

Spencer said general manager Rick Smith called and talked to him about a tryout.

"It's a blessing," said Spencer, who continues to make his home in Houston. "I was looking for another opportunity, and the first team to call is the one that I have unfinished business with. I can't thank Rick enough."

This is fantastic. At the very least I have to appreciate what Rick Smith's doing to give the young man another chance. Who the hell knows, he may turn out to be a contributor.

I agree, hats off to Rick Smith, I wondered if we would call him when Justice's article came out, and they did.

Spencer was doing really well before his injury in 2006. It would be nice if he could make a comeback. He is a big guy, like 6'4" and 335 lbs.

I hope he can play LG because anything would be an upgrade over what we have now...

Wasn't Rick Dennison (the new OC), the primary driver to get FA Wade Smith
signed up and on the Texans' roster ? And after last night I don't think he did much to displace Studdard as our starting LG ?
But this is good news about Spencer - I wish him the best in his new opportunity.

The Texans have their OT's in Winston, Brown, and Rashard whatsisname(?). So where does Spencer fit in, assuming he is over his leg problem in 2006? At OG? Rick Dennison will go for the puny but quick type of Denver guard, and Spence is a mauler. So I just don't get it.

They want to enter the season with 4 OTs. Their 4th, right now, is Adam Stenavich and he looks very bad. The only other two are : Cole Pemberton and Steve Maneri. Maneri has promise but they are converting him from TE. So, they are looking for a guy that can fill that 4th spot. That's why they also worked out Ephraim Salaam. It sounds like neither will be signed, barring injury to one of the other three.

4 OT's? Where did you get that info? I think they have always kept three, with the player not starting being able to play either spot.

Brown, W. Smith, Myers, Caldwell, Winston, Briesel, Butler, Studdard, White. Those will be the 9 barring injury. Maybe 8.

They worked those Spencer and Salaam in case they need someone down the road.

Yes this is correct. If Winston or Brown goes down they need to be able to call in someone that knows the scheme and can backup the other two guys. Spencer might be able to play both tackle and the guards if the leg is good. If not he is not getting a call.

Well, first of all, that is what most NFL teams do.
Second, Kubiak has stated that they are looking for depth at tackle this off-season.
Third, apart from last year, they carried at least four in '07 and '08.

In 2007: Jordan Black, Winston, Butler and Salaam
in 2008: Brown, Winston, Butler and Salaam,

That is 3 young OTs and one old veteran in 2008, and two young unproven guys in 2007.

We do not have any young unproven OTs roster worthy, and Butler is capable of both sides, so there is no need to have a 4th tackle that will be inactive for every game. Wade Smith can play OT in a crunch if needed, especially on the RT.

So your guess that they are going to carry 4 OTs is a reach IMO.

I guess they may IR one or two more guys this week, which might give them another roster spot for a couple weeks. we might see who they fill that with.

I think I heard Kubiak say they were rotating 7 thru three interior spots for now. and depends who other teams cut that we might add if they are clearly better than what we got now, which might be possible.
