Default Schaub joins Slaton as Texans' back-to-back AFC POW; FedEx AIR Nominee too

Texans quarterback Matt Schaub was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 14, becoming the first Texans quarterback to win the offensive award in team history.

Schaub joins running back Steve Slaton as back-to-back winners of the AFC honors, becoming the first teammates this year to win the offensive award in consecutive weeks. The Texans set a franchise record with their fourth player of the week honor, breaking the record of three in 2006 and 2007. Schaub is the third Texan to win offensive honors, joining Slaton, who captured the award last week, and wide receiver Andre Johnson, who won it in Week 4 in 2006.

Congratulations to Mr. Schaub! Well deserved...

On a side note, I went back and watched most of the Green Bay game again on DVR. One thing I was particulary pleased with was to see all the deep balls thrown. I'm talking 25-30+ yards in the air. I didn't count 'em, but it was a bunch - moreso than any game lately that I can recall. I've always liked the idea of going deep at least a couple of times a game just to "show" the defense that you'll do it and open up the underneath game....

There are some critics of Schaub that say he has weak arm strength. It may not be the strongest, but it's not bad. The early TD pass thrown to Walter traveled 51 yards in the air by my calculations (DVR is great for this kind of stuff). I'm talking the yard line from whence the ball left Matt's hand to the yard line where Walter caught it. The incomplete pass to AJ later in the game was also another 51-yarder. Don't know if Schaub was totally airing it out on these two but, IMO, it shows decent arm strength.... (OTOH, the deep ball Rodgers threw to Driver that was caught at the 5 yard line was thrown 63 yards in the air )

I think Schaub has adequate arm strength. It's not great, but it's not a detriment to his ability to be a good QB in the NFL. The pass to Walter is probably a bad example becuase it was under thrown. There's also a big difference between being able to throw a ball 50+ yards and being able to throw it that far with something on it as opposed to hanging it up in the air.

Good to see Schaub and Slaton getting some recognition though.

Yep, same thing I said ("not bad", "decent").

Schaub doesn't have the "fast ball" but there's many greats that didn't have the fast ball either - Montana for one. IMO, he (Schaub) can put "zip" on the ball when he needs to but you won't see 40+ yd zip....

PR firm sent this to me... nice to see more people recognizing Schaub. Schaub's win in the vote will translate to some local charity dollars.

Quote:
Hey Keith –
Not sure if you saw, but Matt Schaub is a nominee for this week’s FedEx Air Player of the Week award - his third nomination for the award this season. Schaub was an Air nominee in Week 7 and Week 8, but failed to get enough votes to win those weeks.

It’s all based on fan votes.

The Key Details:
• Houston fans can vote all week for Schaub at www.NFL.com/FedEx up until Friday at 11:00 a.m. EST. The winners are announced Friday afternoon.
• If Schaub wins, FedEx will make a $1,000 donation in Schaub’s name to the local Safe Kids USA coalition in Houston to help fund child and pedestrian safety around the city.

Please try to fit in a quick mention of the award/charity donation to get your Texans faithful voting for Schaub.

The full press release from the NFL is below. Let me know if you have questions or if you need anything else.

Best,
Jason

And it looks like, with Andre, we may win the award three weeks in a row.

Unless some guy like Moss or TO puts up 120 yards and the big following teams stack the results. Cutler winning over Schaub was a travesty.

Cutler won the FedEx fan-voted award. Schaub won the more important one, and I agree with EZS, Andre is certainly a worthy candidate to win it this week.

Another email to my inbox about FedEx...

Keith,

Matt Schaub was nominated today for the Week 15 FedEx Air Award. This is Schaub’s fourth nomination this season and has yet to win, so there’s definitely incentive to vote! If he wins, $1,000 will go to the Houston Safe Kids Coalition.

Please let me know if you have questions. Thanks!
Dan
