Official 2020 NFL Draft - Round 1 Thread

Coronavirus be damned, we about to do this thing.

The Texans are not scheduled to pick this round, having their first pick at #40. And thanks to bikerack in another thread, seems more likely the team trades down from there and not up.

Let's still use this thread to poke fun at the Jaguars anyway, because they're used to doing football things in front of no one.

I’d file this in the category as “right on brand”, I’m told the Texans have called some teams to trade up into the first round. Bill O’Brien never scared to make a trade. #Texans

Was just coming here to post that. I think nearly all teams do their due diligence on potential moves up and down, so I'm not sure what to make of this yet. The Texans are a little short on ammo to make a major move up, but never say never. Given the likely lack of mini camps, the potential for a shortened training camp... roster building in 2020 is going to be something of a "flight to quality", valuing known quantities over riskier, prospective ones.

Benardrick McKinney might be an asset in a trade offer, but he just signed a 5-yr deal two years ago. His $6M base is guaranteed this year, but the accelerated cap money isn't too bad to swallow ($3M remaining) since the Texans are loaded in cap space, albeit much of that earmarked for Tunsil and other extensions to their stars.

If not to move up tonight, a high profile player that could be a target if negotiations sour is Jamal Adams of the Jets. Given the insight that safety is among the positions the team is targeting in the early rounds, maybe this gains some traction, again, if the Jets aren't happy with contract talks.

Per my friend...yes BOB is doing his due diligence by calling around. Looks like it would take #40 and 2 picks to move up to the last couple of spots in the 1st round.

#40 and 1 pick won't do it.

Just too expensive to move up, same as always. Do it for a Qb, yeah, not sure what’s worth 3 picks at the end of the first round.

This line of thinking is how the Texans ended up with Jason Babin. Glad it didn't fall this way tonight.

Babin had value as the 27th pick in the 2004 Draft, but just not as a 3-4 OLB.
One would have thought that Dom Capers, Vic Fangio, and Charley Casserly between themselves could have figured that out before they drafted him ?

It took until his 8th season and his 5th NFL team before Babin really showed his first round value; but that's less of my point... my concern is just how the draft trade chart makes trading up so expensive. The Texans gave up a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th round pick to get #27 that year. Babin proved to be a worthy target eventually, but a hefty price was paid.
