Using the current situation's known and unknowns, I would try as hard as I could to extend Mallet right now.
Get him for backup money with a ton of incentives. He will have to compete for the starting role, and should be able to make mid-level starters money if he stays healthy and produces. I would take a flyer on a 1 or 2 year deal. I am not sold on QBs in the draft at #10-15, our most likely draft position. Because I don't know how Savage is doing, I cannot predict a QB drafted in the back half of the draft. Forgot to say, I would not touch RG3.

I do think Washington has done its best to ruin RG3 so he will be available for trade, but agree, likely that won't be to Texans. RG3 might be successful somewhere once he heals up physically and mentally.

They have not been great for him. But RG3 has done an even better job ruining himself. He is a huge drama queen and has already seriously feuded with two coaches in 3 years and lost the locker room and the fan base to Colt McCoy. He may face a Tim Tebow situation where no team wants an attention starved backup QB, and I'm not sure anyone wants to invest in him as a starter at this point. His best chance at an NFL job might be if the Jets or some media hungry team decides to reunite him with Art Briles.

I'm actually more interested in Sam Bradford if he gets cut in 2015, which seems likely. As long as he's cheap, I think he might be worth a shot competing with Ryan Mallet through training camp and the preseason.

RG3 and Sam Bradford seem to have been injured quite a bit for some reason. just a concern.

Hilarious parody song about the RG3 benching (to the tune of Elton John's "Candle In The Wind")
