Default Ed Reed - Hip Surgery

Called me a pessimist, but I think Mr. Reed and the Ravens knew about and 'expected' this.

Agree, does sound suspicious and possibly more severe than thought to be.

Guess we will see how it works out. Good we drafted a safety , any other FA out there for one year deal?

It doesn't matter what the Ravens knew about since it's not a trade.

Hopefully he is healthy for the regular season (or however close he comes to healthy after a decade in the NFL).

Didn't the Ravens and Texans go right down to the wire with each other before the Texans raised the bid enough to sign Reed, in other words, wouldn't think the Ravens would have gone that far into the bidding for Reed if they knew there was a physical problem ? And if there was a physical/health issue, why wasn't it detected when the Texans gave Reed his physical exam ?

Just saying the Ravens knew and that was likely a big factor in why they didn't re-sign him, which in most cases, would send up the red flags. Now I'm curious if the Texans even checked him out.

I have no idea how far the bidding went between the 3 parties or how much, or even if, the Ravens offered anything. It could've been a token offer for an aging vet who gave them HOF performance for many years. I suspect when we see and hear stories on how two teams are bidding against each other and how much the offers are, it's mostly "info" being released by the player's agent. The level of Ravens interested could have been a big smoke screen by Reed's agent. Who knows for sure, but it didn't appear any of the other teams were interested in Reed. SanFran, Washington, NYG, NE, DET - just to name a few - all needed a S and I don't recall any of them sniffing around Reed.

Hope it works out and he doesn't end up being the Ahmad Green of the D. Just trying to talk about something during this boring offseason period...

I doubt he was going to do much in TC anyway.

4 months till kickoff. I think we'll be OK. Good reps for the Swearinger kid.

I agree anything we heard about negotiations is from the agent.

I am 100% sure we didn't sign one of the older players in the NFL without a physical. Especially when it was the slowest signing in history.

I agree it makes no difference where Reed is in training camp.

All that matters is if this is dealt with by week 1 (and I'm not overly confident or pessimistic on that).

Does anyone know the exact procedure he had? Was it for a degenerative thing? A recent injury? Something nagging they thought would heal on its own but they got proactive now so it wouldn't linger? I'm not real familiar with hip surgeries other than replacements.

This doesn't disturb me much. Anyone who didn't realize Reed is damaged goods hasn't been paying attention but Reed will gut out everything he can get out of his body and we are just hoping he holds up well enough to be available at playoff time.

Except I'm wondering if he's not too physical & violent for todays NFL ? After seeing some of his tape from college games, it looks like what we got ourselves here is the second coming of Jack Tatum. Hey I like him, but I'm afraid they are gonna need to tone his act down.

Red face

From what I've read, Reed had microscopic surgury on a tear on lebrum, sounds like to clean out some bone chips and repair tendon.

Another place saw where Reed played through this last year.

And on some medical site saw where takes 3-12 months to recover , with rehab beginning after a month depending on severity.

None of that is official.

Probably he will be fine by mid training camp

Speaking of Reeds, and surgeries, Brooks Reed also had one this offseason according to Wade:
Quote:
“I’m concerned like I am with anybody that’s coming off an injury, is coming off an operation,” Phillips said, when asked about his level of concern over Ed Reed’s progress after arthroscopic hip surgery this offseason. “I believe in our people and they say hey, ‘he’s gonna be fine, Cushing’s gonna be fine.’ Even Brooks Reed had an injury last year and was operated in the offseason. You’re always concerned about it. I don’t want to blow it up say I don’t think they will be back because I think they will.”
And Sharpton isn't participating in the offseason program:
Quote:
“Darryl’s not healthy enough right now to do our offseason stuff,” Phillips said. “He’s still not been cleared by the doctors from his injury at the end of the season. I think luck has a lot to do with it unfortunately. He’s been banged up three or four years in a row.”

Those team were looking for a longer term/younger guy to fill that position. The Texans see him as a 2 year deal and in preperation to have the cap space for JJ Watt and Cush. Think thats why they drafted D.J. Swearinger in the 2nd.

That is where coaching comes in.
