Default Thoughts after Cards Game

I know we still have the 2nd half, but that's almost a completely different game.

1st Half thoughts

The first string offense looked very good. I think it can't be over estimated how valuable continuity is in the NFL. I think it is a huge part of the Colts success. Especially on offense.

Foster looked good but was running on 1st and 2nd downs and in long yardage situations. He is obviously great for the stretch and the counter and the "slow to the hole" running game. He also looks very good in the 2nd level. I am disappointed we never got to see him tonight in anything like short yardage.

Dreesen is a big drop from OD. He is a solid #2 TE who can block and catch well enough to not tip off what the play is, but our offense would suffer with him in a big role. Casey looked very good against the 2s. I'd love to see Casey with the 1s and Schaub if OD is not back next week.

The OL did exactly what can be expected of it. Small creases in the running game that will work against 6 and 7 man fronts. Solid pass blocking and great blitz pick up on the TD. Also watch the running plays and you will see why Walter will start of JJ no matter how dangerous JJ is. Walter comes in motion and cracks better than anybody in the NFL and makes the counter a great play for the Texans. And the counter is probably the best play to Play action off of.

The Defense hit hard and hit often. I would be fine with that as a calling card even if we learn later that we still can't cover anyone. Pollard and Cushing are so physical.

Okoye played tough. He is clearly suited to playing forward on the snap. He went right by Faneca to knock down Leinhart's pass on one play. I honestly was doubting he would ever amount to much, but maybe it was more a case of there is only one scheme he really has value in.

With the 2nd string guys I will just say that Orlovsky is a terrible fit for our offense. He is so clumsy that he struggles to make the handoff on the outside zone (our base running play). And he also can't boot or throw on the run. So basically he lacks the ability to do the basic elements of our system. He's not terrible, just terrible for us. Someone in the pro scouting department blew it big time on this guy.

And Okam is useless out there. His first play in the game ended with him pushed a good 8 yards off the LOS. And that wasn't the exception for his time out there. I don't understand how a guy his size could be bad at holding his ground in the middle of the line, but he is.

First 3 quarters 16-zip, then, as in the past the wheels come off in the 4th, and we lose the dam game 19-16. Purely sucks!!

Keith, It's great to have football games to talk about. I've been so excited about the depth at RB, but it took a serious hit tonight with Slaton's shabby performance and the Tate injury. Really takes the wind out of a good performance. Here are our early thoughts of the game:

1. When Orlovsky had suffucient time, Orlovsky looked very steady to me. I'm a lot less worried about him as a backup. If he plays in the regular season at the level he played against the Cardinals, I'll be satisfied. I'd still rather have Sage, though.

2. I thought Jacoby Jones looked excellent. I think he'll see the field more this year than last year. It's starting to look like he wasn't a wasted draft pick after all.

3. I thought the pass blocking by the first team was excellent. The run blocking, not so much.

4. No way we put Dickerson on the practice squad.

5. Holiday looked shockingly bad. His kick returning made me pine for Davis.

6. I'm hoping Mario's bull rush sack means he has improved the use of his hands. That sack may be the most impressive I've ever seen him make.

7.Casey looked very comfortable. I think he's ready for more playing time.

8. Slaton is looking more and more like the specialty back he was drafted to be. He should be good in that role.

9. I seem to be the only person who notices that we would have a more potent passing offense if we replaced Leach with someone who can run better after catching the ball. The occasional dump pass to him ought to be a big weapon in our offense, and it rarely is. I guess he's considered important enough as a blocker, though, that his starting job is safe.

10.Dreesen is definately not a starting NFL tight end. He's not particularly fast or strong.

11. Bennett is a goner.

I really hope this is the year Jacoby Jones stops doing that one RANDOM game-killer thing that makes you say "Dude, what the ****************, Jacoby?"

1. Orlavsky: looks like the one guy at the club that loves to dance but just doesn't know how and has no rhythm.

2. Mario, Shaub, AJ, Cushing: Ready to play some football!!!

3. Sharpton: This guy definitely needs to get some playing time. Maybe he can be a huge contributer while Cushing is out...

4. Slaton: definitely cannot be counted on as an everydown back...I think the long drive wore him down and his mechanics suffered after each play...Still think he can be a major weapon in the screen game. I am still willing to give him another shot because he missed 5 games last year...

5. Jacoby: This guy is primed to make a huge impact this year.

6. Holliday: Thinking too much...I give him one more preseason game...

7. Molden: Just happy to see him on the field...He actually held his own pretty well...

8. EMitch: Showed some penetration but almost useless with the bull rush or when he's doubled...

9. Studdard: One of the reasons why Slaton had such a poor performance...Got blew up one too many times.

10. White: See Studdard...I almost thought he was Caldwell (63 vs. 62) out there...not in play though.

11. Oline: As a unit they looked like night and day after the 1's left the game...

12. Red Zone: playcalling was less than par and execution was even worse on some occassions. Before Slaton fumbled that ball, if DanO would have thrown that quick screen to Jacoby a little quicker that would have been a TD.

Overall: very impressed with the 1's both offense and defense...

Interesting note: how did it take the coaching staff so long to notice that Arian Foster could be a great back for our team. It wasn't like he had so much talent in front of him.

On that last note, I think Foster has improved his running from where it was a year ago. It seems to me he runs harder to the hole now. A year ago I think I saw more hesitation in his game.

Also I know Kubiak hates to put in backs until he trusts their pass blocking. That may have been part of why he didn't play more last year.

We have a winner....

That and Foster was POed that he was not drafted. He was cut and when he got back he still did not get the amount of work he needed to do to get in the game. Until you can block you do not run.

Yep, there was some attitude issues and some friction with the coaching staff but by all reports, Foster is now onboard and conducting himself to everyone's satisfaction...

So Tate's injured and may be gone for the year. Slaton has obviously not cured his fumbling problem. Foster looked good though and may be our regular season starter. Barring injury, I think the backfield question has been settled.

Print up the t-shirts. We are ARIAN NATION!!!

(sorry folks.)
