John McClain says the Texans will take a RB over a CB in the 1st. Since John has been wrong every season since Kubiak has gotten here, it's now set. Look for any position but RB in the 1st.

Actually I'm starting to think there's more of a likelihood the Texans do draft Mathews with their first-rounder instead of a corner back, but it's definitely got nothing to do with McClains prediction. For me it's got to do with the strength of the CBs in this draft, which I think has maybe a half dozen or more strong prospects that could last up to around our 2nd round pick. And it's unclear to me that any single corner prospect including Haden is alone at the top of this group ?

"I think" being the operative phrase. This time of year, I trust nothing that comes from the mouths of coaches and general managers. They want the rest of the league confused about what they plan to do.

I think he picked an outside linebacker last year from USC who ended up third place in DROY votes. He was only 36 votes off.

No way we take a RB at 20 (unless Spiller happens to fall to us), CB or trade IMO.

So, those who are enamored with Ryan Mathews, try to remember who he played against. I myself am intrigued with this guy, but #20 is just too high in my opinion. Now, I love to get exceptional players in the first round that can't be found later in the draft. That's why I have Eric Berry, Trent Williams, Earl Thomas, Dan Williams and Sean Weatherspoon at the top of my wish list. Then comes the NEEDS pick at CB. While there may be options at CB available at #51, I'd rather take the guy I want instead of taking what's left in the 2nd. For me, it comes down to Kyle Wilson and Devin McCourty. My instincts tell me that Wilson may be the more talented cover corner, but McCourty will be the better teammate. I have absolutely no proof that Wilson is a selfish jerk or that he'll turn into Dunta Robinson, but that is just the 'vibe' I get from him. McCourty on the other hand comes across as a team-first type of player that will do whatever it takes to help the team win. I think he is more physical and is a better tackler in the run game while Wilson will probably collect more interceptions. I would like to sit in a room with both of them when they are being interviewed so I could get a better feel for their character since I'm just basing my opinion on their interactions with teammates on the field. I guess McCourty just comes across as a Pro while Wilson makes me think that he's got something to prove, if that makes sense. I'm hoping that the 49ers or Steelers draft Wilson so I don't have to make that decision because, I have Wilson ahead of McCourty on my board right now. Is this a shared opinion? Is this even fair? Probably not and like I said there's no real basis for it. It is probably just like Todd McShay saying that Jimmy Claussen isn't a real leader and his teammates hate him. That's one thing that gets lost in the draft evaluations. That's personality interactions and how well you 'like' the guy that you want to hire and have play for your team.

234 yards and 3 touchdowns against the #4 team in the Nation....Boise State just gets no respect.

Where was the Boise State defense ranked vs. the run?

Your notion about Wilson's demeanor, though, really has me baffled. Wilson was well-liked and a locker-room leader at B.S.U. He was interviewed many, many times by the local t.v. stations during his career, and I can tell you that he is soft-spoken, but confident and never has come across as a selfish jerk. I never saw him make a mistake on the field that would ever make me think it was due to a selfish motive. McCourty may be a more physical player, and I am pretty sure I would be happy with the Texans taking either guy. I know guys get picked to pieces leading up to the draft, but there should be no concern at all about Wilson being a team player. |

I don't think competition level is overly important when grading a RB.
Chris Johnson came out of East Carolina. He had four 100 yard games as a senior against Houston, UTEP, Memphis, and Tulane. How do those run defenses compare to Boise St? The only good team CJ played as a senior was Virginia Tech and he had 10 carries for 29 yards. Michael Turner, Deangelo Williams, LT, and Bryan Westbrook are all small school backs who have been in the top 5 in the NFL Rushing in the past 5 years. And Willie Parker never saw the field even though he went to UNC. Meanwhile only Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Lewis, and Shaun Alexander have been able to crack the top 5 in Rushing in the past 5 years from the Big 12 and SEC (the two best conferences in College Football). I would bet there is less correllation between competition level and success at RB then at any other position. |

Check out my first mock draft; let me know what you think http://blogs.chron.com/nfl/ He is now hedging his bets. Listening to him on the Radio/computer right now.

When you think the RB that the Texans would want will be gone by 20, you have to look elsewhere.
