By the way, how typical is it that the team has thrown all sorts of picks at the WR position and the best receiver on the team not named Deandre is a guy they signed off the street?

Despite some egregious clock management issues and some typically terrible play calling, I thought the game plan was more or less exactly what it needed to be. Play action worked great, the roll outs were great and I'd like to see more of them, you can do a lot with the split back sets and I'd like to see them use that formation more both for pass protection and for rushing plays. Other than the first possession we didn't see much running towards the sideline, and I think with Watson's legs you can use an option pitch out of the split back set to great effect once or twice a game.

In a similar concept to isn't it amazing how much smarter your father gets as you go from 17 to 25, isn't it amazing how much better the OL gets when you employ a decent game plan? Sure NE's front seven is at best nothing special, but still.

The bad news is the team's secondary is horrific. The good news is most teams don't have Tom Brady to exploit it.
First we ran it for a TD to Miller, and then it wasn't from split backs, but they definitely added the speed option this week. Bill O'Brien the most vanilla play caller of the past 3 years is going speed option to a WR coming on a reverse.

Maybe OB is a 'genius' in very specific circumstances like when he has a good QB. I guess this makes him like everyone else in the NFL.

Watson is in his 3rd start and already scored 50. Something that David Carr, Tony Banks, Dave Ragone, Matt Schaub, Sage Rosenfels, TJ Yates, Matt Leinhart, Case Keenum, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer, Brandon Weeden, Brock Osweiller, and Tom Savage couldn't do.

They've run a couple of pitch outs, effectively, but haven't really used the split back formation more than a time or two. Maybe they thought they'd put too much of it on film. Who cares, we've hung 50+ on these fools.

I've been half watching the Cowboys-Rams game. As bad as Goff was at first, and he was horrible as a rookie, he's pretty good now. Hell, they're thinking about beating the Cowboys in Arlington and going 3-1. Anyway, that's sort of what I expected from Deshaun. I thought he'd be bad at first and hopefully he'd develop into something decent later. Welp.

While the positive vibes are flowing I want to ask if anyone still wants to argue with me about whether spending a high draft pick on a QB is a good idea?

It's like talented guys have a better chance to develop into good starting QBs. And like talented guys have a better chance to develop with a coach not named Jeff Fisher.

And there's Tom Savage holding the ball waaayyy too long. I wonder if his agent makes comments after the game about how he deserves to start.

I agree it's hard to get right when you pick one.

But it's impossible to get right if you don't even try.

That's true. Or you could fill the time with journeyman backups until you find the one you like.....

That's not a great idea, but it's not the worst idea unless you pay one of those journeymen $72 million and then have to spend a 2nd round pick to get rid of him.

I used to gamble a bit (still do but not with real money). One philosophy was you have to play (bet) in order to win (cash). Another philosophy was "I'm not playing so I don't lose". See the conundrum?
