Default Texans Tender 7

From the chronic - http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...t/6895788.html

The Texans made seven qualifying offers to players who will be restricted free agents on Thursday.

As expected, middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans and tight end Owen Daniels were tendered the maximum. That means if they receive qualifying offers and the Texans didn't match, they would get first- and third-round draft choices.

Strong safety Bernard Pollard was tendered at a first-round pick.

Offensive tackle Rashad Butler and running back Ryan Moats were tendered with a right of first refusal and their original draft pick. Butler (Carolina) and Moats (Philadelphia) were third-round picks.

The Texans have a right of first refusal on guard Chris White and defensive end Tim Bulman but will receive no compensation if they fail to match an offer the players receive.

Defensive tackle DelJuan Robinson signed a minimum tender Wednesday.

Well, should be interesting starting Friday to see how Texans do to retain their own FA as well as pick up a few more good, quality players, perhaps with experience on winning teams. I do hope we keep most of our FA.

So that would mean that the Saints can jump out there and grab DeMeco for a 1st and 3rd which for them drafting at the very last means it's virtually a
2nd & a fourth rounder.
A Pro-Bowler, great team guy/intangibles, very durable, and in his prime at only 25 years of age. I think he's worth it ?

Actually, you can make a pretty good argument that the first pick of the 2nd round is actually worth considerably more than the last pick of the 1st. While the last pick in the 1st only gives you 10 minutes to swing a deal, the first pick in the 2nd gives you overnight to work a trade. Teams will have a chance to regroup overnight, see who's still available, and then fashion a trade if there is someone they want.

They can't just grab him for a 1st and a 3rd.

They can offer him a deal for a 1st and a 3rd, and then we get to decide if we want to match the deal. If we decide that market value is too high for him, then we get the 1st and 3rd when we let him walk. I am sure part of those considerations will be where the picks are located.

But it's not like a team can just go take him and give us the picks.

Right - it's all up there at the head of the thread.

Plus under the unofficial draft pick slotting system you should be able to sign #33 for a lot less than you could #32. The difference between #32 and #33 is much greater than the difference between #31 and #32. For example, from last year:

31. Arizona - RB Chris Wells, Ohio State - 5 years, $11.8M max.; $6.345M guaranteed
32. Pittsburgh - DE Ziggy Hood, Missouri - 5 years, $11.3M max.; $6.1M guaranteed
****Round 2****
33. Detroit - S Louis Delmas, Western Michigan - 4 years, $5.699M; $3.5M guaranteed

That's not as big of a deal in this uncapped year, but it could be down the road.

Of course, all of this is meaningless if you're at #33 and the team at #32 is headed up to the commissioner with the name of the guy you really want written on their card.
