THR Computer Mock
Thehuddlereport.com is a pay site that is fun to surf. Besides funny profiles, they do mock drafts including a Computer generated 7 round one. Based upon all of the flack I've been seeing about Jeremy Maclin as a player who doesn't make the team better because he doesn't address a "need" I have subsequently placed Peria Jerry ahead of him on my draft board. That's important because in this draft I had my choice between the two.
Anyway, THR had us selecting the following: 15 RB Chris Wells 46 CB Darius Butler 77 TE Jared Cook 108 S Rashad Johnson 144 DT Corvey Irvin 175 DE Tim Jamison 206 K Graham Gano Using my board, I selected: 15 DT Peria Jerry 46 DE Robert Ayers 77 CB Dominique Johnson 108 S Rashad Johnson (that was funny that he was my top guy too). 144 WR Mike Thomas (well I suppose we could use a KR/PR guy). 175 LB Lee Robinson 206 OL Robert Brewster My biggest quandry was at #144. While Thomas was my top guy, I also had sights on Corvery Irvin (already had Jerry), JP Wilson, and the LB Jason Williams. I was not happy that I was not able to select a RB in this draft. Taking a look at UDFAs Kory Sheets, Javarris Williams, and Marlon Lucky would be the RBs I'd pursue. I would also take a look at DTs Ra'Shon Harris and Myron Pryor as run stuffers. Lastly, LB Kaluka Maiava would be targeted as a possible SAM and Special Teams guy. |
I saw that draft yesterday and thought it was just about the worst mock I have seen yet. (Talking about thehuddlereports mock).

I wouldn't mind selecting a RB in the first, but I wouldn't want it to be Wells.
I like your results a lot better. |
I like 4 of the original picks:
Wells Butler Johnson Cano Not so sure that this is the route I would go, but if we lost Dunta in free agency then I might go Butler in the second. I would certainly go Johnson in the 4th and Cano in the 7th. |

15 WR/KR Jeremy Maclin 46 DE Robert Ayers 77 SAM LB Cody Brown 108 S Rashad Johnson 144 WILL LB Jason Williams 175 RB P.J. Hill 206 DT Darryl Richard Then I could have looked to sign Robert Brewster and Lee Robinson as UDFAs. |
Even though a few sites say otherwise, I think Kory Sheets gets drafted. He showed enough speed to get outside a couple of times in the Senior Bowl, even though one was called back for holding. He had 7 carries for 32 yds and a 61 yd kickoff return. He caught several checkdowns, but they were well-covered, so no yardage. I liked how he read his blocks and showed some acceleration off his cuts.

Shawn Nelson was also sold pretty well by Mayock and Davis during Senior Bowl week. I'm just as guilty as anyone. Just to name a few. LB Scott McKillop QB John Parker Wilson LB Jason Williams LB Lee Robinson FS CJ Spillman LB Victor Butler OG Andy Kemp SS Keith Fitzhugh DT Darryl Richard OG Greg Isdaner OG Robert Brewster DT Myron Pryor Herb Donaldson |

You'll have to 'splain this to me, because I'm not familiar with your reference. I sometimes like talking about guys besides the "usual suspects". It might be interesting for everyone to list their sleepers. It probably should be done in its own thread. Texan fans from different parts of the country should have a better familiarity with players in their region. The question is, can you be objective. |

I figured it was something like that. I meant to watch those shows throughout the week. Every afternoon when I got home from work, I would forget it. Getting old ain't for sissies, boys.
Mayock may be a good analyst and evaluator, but he was annoying to me doing the game. While he was right dogging Harrell's arm, there were 3 times when he was so wrong it was agitating. I would have to go back to the game to get all the names correct, but here is were the crappy commentary came from. First, there was a run to the outside where Cushing was pursuing. He engaged the pulling OL and knocked him backwards. The rb cut to the inside and Mayock criticized Cushing for overrunning the play. I guess he expected Cushing to somehow overcome a lineman who probably had 40 to 50 pounds on him (and a good blocking angle) and make the tackle on a running back in space. Most good running backs can make a move to get around a linebacker one on one. Davis tried to diffuse the comment by saying something like " well, the good thing is, he spilled the play back inside". I thought it was a great play by Cushing, but I guess he could have grabbed the lineman and thrown him over his head and made the tackle himself. On a kickoff return, the returner worked himself towards the far sideline, and when a crease developed, Mayock shouts, "Explode! Right now!" The guy was already going pretty full out at that point, and was able to accelerate slightly through the crease and got the most out of the opportunity. The only way that a guy could have "exploded" at that point was if he had a jet pack on his back. On another play where the running back got stuffed by the interior dl, Mayock said the center (I think it was Unger, but not sure) and right guard ( Levitre) got blown up. They showed a replay and clearly, Levitre took his man completely out of the play to the right. Mayock should have corrected himself at that point, but didn't. |
The huddlereport has a new 7 round computer mock.

15 LB Aaron Maybin Penn State 46 DE Robert Ayers Tennessee 77 OC Eric Wood Louisville 108 S Rashad Johnson Alabama 144 DE Lawrence Sidbury Richmond 175 RB *PJ Hill Wisconsin 206 QB *Stephen McGee Texas A&M |
McGee is looking like most athletic QB at combine. Too bad he got injured early in 2008. Think he'll last to 7th round.

I also thought that Brian Robiskie clearly looks like the best WR in the draft after Crabtree. He posted a 4.50 fourt yard dash which I think solidifies him as an near elite WR prospect. If he slides into the second round, someone is getting a major steal! |

My question is if I took him in the 5th, where I also see John Parker Wilson going, do I go with Wilson based on the bigger game experience. McGee looked really good at the Shrine game. Wilson looked good at the senior bowl. I see McGee with more upside than Brink. |
Question: (1) DE Aaron Maybin seems kinda light in the butt for a 4-3 DE in the NFL? No question about his first step though. (2) CB/S Dominique (another one) Johnson is very intriguing, but he is supposedly a hothead and likes to talk back to his coaches?

I think he would be fine at DE, run stopping is not his forte but I think he is quick enough to disrupt. Its just a tradeoff, would you prefer Tyson Jackson, an absolute brick wall in the running game or Maybin whose quickness can get pressure and disrupt run plays?
I like Maybin, personally. |

There are some trade offs that are going to be considered. We aren't going to be able to have our cake and eat it too. If Brown is gone, as I suspect, I feel our next best combination of pass rush/run stuffing is Orakpo. He's not great at either, but sufficient at both. Maybin gives you a lot more pass rush, but you really pay for it against the run. Of course, he wouldn't be that big of a liability against the run as an OLB. However, as a DE, he would be. Lastly, Ayers may not be the pass rusher that Orakpo is, but he's better vs. the run. |
