I went back and watched the Shriners game and added some guys to my list. This is a deep RB draft, and we should take 2, forget the old beat up FA they are going to sign. A couple of late NTs are available and if you want to upgrade the LBs you will be able to in the middle of this draft.

PK, your list isn't what I consider to be sleepers. B.J. Raji is probably going top 15, maybe top 10. Your list of centers are the top rated at their positions. I think a sleeper is a guy who turns out a lot better than where he is rated going into the draft. Ryans was a sleeper. At this point, Slaton was a sleeper. Diles - sleeper. Your qb list is obviously all potential sleepers by pretty much any definition.
A sleeper is a guy everyone misses on. He's the player that the guy that whines about management not drafting two years ago. The idiot Texans could have drafted Mister Wonderful, but passed him up to draft Mister Lead Feet. The only thing is, every other team passed him up, also. Three times. This should be a short list that you think will make you proud someday. Like Roy said, everyone has these pet players they want to pimp. I've already mentioned a couple of mine. Kory Sheets-RB and Jeremy Childs-WR. Both these guys go undrafted according to Draftek consensus. I'll add a couple of others that you guys have already mentioned. Jasper Brinkley -LB and Xavier Fulton-OT. Bear Pascoe-TE, also. |

BTW I started tracking Raji and calling him a 1st rounder when the "experts" had him still in the 3rd round. |
Victor Butler, Oregon State
Height: 6-2. Weight: 237. Projected 40 Time: 4.60. Projected Round (2009): 5. 1/10/09: Victor Butler had a monstrous senior campaign, finishing with 65 tackles, 21.5 TFL, 12 sacks and four forced fumbles. 12/6/08: A collegiate defensive end who will have to make the rough transition to linebacker. You can't question the numbers though; Butler has 54 tackles, 16.5 TFL and eight sacks. These are the kind of LB's I would like to see us add in the later rounds. Stryker Sulak, Missouri Height: 6-5. Weight: 250. Projected 40 Time: 4.65. Projected Round (2009): 5-6. 1/9/09: A situational pass-rusher in the NFL, Stryker Sulak notched 15.5 TFL, 10.5 sacks, six passes broken up and six forced fumbles as a senior. |
Butler and Sulak are on my list, I'm just not confident that what they were able to do in college will translate to the NFL. That's why I'm looking for them in the 5th or 6th rounds.

Just to add one more guy I've been contemplating... SS/LB Kevin Akins - Boston College - 6'2" 224lbs as a late round project who would become my Nickle OLB. He's pretty good in coverage and could probably add some weight to his frame. Should probably run a 4.53 or so at the Combine. |

Watch this guy, Houston's Vollmer
He is someone we need to target. He can swing, he can be the guy who makes Winston or Brown move inside longterm. Plus is below the radar right now. |

Couple of things. BSU had their pro day yesterday. Jeremy Childs ran a 4.47 and a 4.49 40. This is more in line to what I expected him to run from watching his football speed. He ran a 4.57 at the combine. He also did a 4.11 short shuttle, which is decent. As I mentioned before, this guy makes all the catches and gets separation. He was very instrumental in BSU's success this year. I really believe he is draft material, but whether he will be or not, I can't say.
Ian Johnson stayed with his combine 40 time and didn't run. He did do a 6.86 three-cone. Would have put him in top 5 rb at combine. Weighed 211. Wyoming RB Devin Moore ran a 4.35 and 4.37 40 and did a 4.08 short shuttle and a 6.92 three-cone and 28 reps 225 bench. http://blogs.nfl.com/category/pro-days/ I have been re-watching the East-West Shrine game, specifically watching Sebastian Vollmer. I haven't finished the game, but am into the 4th quarter. He has taken the majority of the snaps at right tackle. Most of the time he has been going against Lawrence Sidbury. He has had a few snaps against Myron Pyor and some snaps against Orion Martin. He has doubled the dt a couple of times on running plays. Sidbury has not come close to beating him at this time in the game. Orion Martin got close on a couple of speed rushes. Both of those plays were completed passes, one for a long touchdown in the 4th quarter, so, he did give the qb time. Vollmer has looked effortless all game. If Sidbury is any good, which I think is the consensus around here, then Vollmer would be a great pick-up if he is available in later rounds. I'll watch the rest of the game and give a follow-up on how he does in the rest of the 4th quarter. Nice call, PK & Roy. |
I liked what I saw of Bruce Johnson at the combine and here is a snippet from his Pro Day.

I watched the rest of the 4th quarter of the East West game. Vollmer didn't play anymore. Sidbury was able to apply pressure to the qb going up against Dan Gay IV from Baylor. He never gave Vollmer any trouble the whole game.
There was one funny play when I was watching Vollmer. On a pass play, the qb couldn't find anyone open and started to scramble. He rolled out to Vollmer's side where Vollmer had engaged his man and was keeping him way out of the play, but out to the right. The qb decides to scramble back the other direction and eventually runs right into Myron Pryor who wraps him up with a nice form tackle. Announcers get all excited and say something like " Pryor waited right where he seemed to know qb would run back to. " Everyone on the East side is slapping Pryor on the back for the great sack. I run the play back to see who missed his block on Pryor. What really happened was he got flat-out pancaked by I think one of the BYU guys. I mean he was flat on his stomach like a big walrus. If the blocker had just laid on top of him, no sack. Instead, they just both just got to their feet, thinking the play was over for them. Both Pryor and the blocker start looking around to see what is happening and the qb runs right into Pryor. From a humiliating pancake to the luckiest sack I've seen in quite awhile. |
Zack Follett OLB- Cal- THE SLEEPER OF THE DRAFT
Ryan Schmidt OG/C- South Florida- Plays with a real nasty streak and is a load in the middle at 330 and 6-5 Darrell Mack RB-Utah- Underrated runner who didn't have a strong senior year Jason McCourty CB-Rutgers- productive DB that returned and played ST |
The Ducks’ 6-2, 250-pound defensive end and two-time Pacific-10 Conference first-team all-league choice completed the regular season leading the nation in fumble recoveries (5), ranked second in the country in quarterback sacks (13) while equaling the school’s single-season record, and tied for fifth in tackles for loss (19.5). The Trabuco Canyon, Calif., standout also posted 50 tackles his senior season and already has claimed the school record for most quarterback sacks in a career (29.5).
** Named Oregon’s Most Outstanding Player his senior season, Reed also finished second in the voting for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award behind Texas’ Brian Orakpo. http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.d...ATCLID=3632104 ********************************************** Absolutely no measurables, but multi-year starter in a respectable conference who play with extrreme passion. Set all kind of records. Late the second day - 5th or 6th round. Who knows ? |

Nick Reed certainly had the college production, some nice awards, and now his measureables pretty good as well from his pro day. http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.d...ATCLID=3691710
His numbers would have put him middle of 11 linebackers that went to combine Reed measured in at 6-foot-1, 245 pounds and put up some impressive numbers in the drills: 40-yard Dash: 4.71 Vertical Jump: 31.5 inches Bench Press Reps (225 pounds): 24 Broad Jump: 9.0 feet Short Shuttle: 4.27 Three-Cone Drill: 6.96 60-yard Shuttle: 12.02 I guess we will see what happens. |

My thought is that he might be a Robert Mathis type edge rusher for us, though that's a long-shot based on a lot of hope (and maybe some prayer). Not a big deal so long as the investment isn't too steep. I'm not talkin a Jason Babin type reach here. |
Here's an interesting one:
OL Lance Louis (6-2 3/8, 303) drew a lot of attention from scouts interested in his speed. He ran a 4.76 and 4.80 in the 40-yard dash, a 4.71 in the short shuttle and 8.03 in the three-cone drill. Lewis also posted a 30-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot, 8-inch broad jump and 30 bench press lifts. Those are some ridiculous number for a 300 pounder, though his agility is a bit in question. http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/03/26/ol-l...state-pro-day/ |
Quote:
4.82-Shuttle 8.01 - Cone 8'9" - Broad Jump 28" - Vertical 31 - Bench Press Not too bad. |
Most interesting is his straightline speed. 4.8 that's really fast for a big man.

Excellent size...Long arms...Good athlete...Fantastic pass rusher and blitzer...Good strength...Tough...Physical...A powerful tackler...Looks comfortable in coverage...Does a nice job of taking on and shedding blockers...Decent range...Aggressive with a non-stop motor...Makes plays in pursuit...Solid instincts...Is intense and competitive...Offers some versatility...Productive...Has a lot of experience...A team leader
** Best fit at the next level will likely come on the strongside in a 4-3 scheme or outside in a 3-4...Big, versatile 'backer http://www.draftcountdown.com/scouti...int-Sintim.php ********************************** Clint Sintim, Virginia OLB (3-4) Yep there really is a college program that runs the 3-4. And this guy had 11 sacks last year so we know he can rush the passer off of the edge. Says here he looks like a SAM in the 4-3 (and this guy is a full grown LB at 255, big enouth to play strongside), and I think we need a SAM ugrade more than we need a WIL upgrade plus with his pass rushing skills he stays on the field on third and long. I dunno but I'm thinking he might be a better value than H-towns favorite heart-throb, Clay Matthews ? BTW 1560 had this guy on today (before they had Clay Matthews on), and he sounds like a pretty good kid. Said he was Chris Longs roommate and best buddy last year at Virginia. |

about alternatives who can be had at a less expensive price, but not in the third round. This guy is a solid value in the second if not higher. I see him at SAM on first and second downs and on the edge in passing downs. |
Quote:
Sintim might be a pass-rushing specialist that I bring in on 3rd down when I slide Antonio Smith inside. I can get a guy like that in Cody Brown. Sintim has not shown me the ability to play in space. By the way, the only prospect that I may have a man-crush on in this draft class is Jeremy Maclin. We don't have any "real" need for his services, but I still want him on the roster. |
I dunno which I wish for more, that Matthews didn't have a relative in Houston or that he not be from USC ? Frankly I don't like USC because of all the favored treatment they get from the media and the NCAA, but my real problem with them is all the busts that have come out of there in recent years. Leinert, Bush, all of those WRs, etc. And I think the 3 LBs and their QB are all real strong candidates to carry on that tradition.
Anyway if Clay Matthews were Clay Sudhops from Tennessee or Auburn or wherever, there wouldn't be this clamor (especally in Houston) to draft him so high and he would probably end up being takin' somewhere in the second or early third round. |
