Three picks left to start Day 3. Will the Texans continue to ignore the tight end position? Or the defense?

Where did everyone go, by the way? I remember when we used to have tons of traffic here on draft days. And not on the old site, either. After that spineless dickwit Sweeney shut the other site down there was still lots of traffic here for many years. Where did everyone go? I'm asking a serious question because I literally do not visit any other Texans boards.

Besides TE we need a replacement for starting DE Jared Crick and it's uncertain if LT Duane Brown will be ready to go for the opener in September. Maybe they think they can get these guys as undrafted rookie free agents.

Using my draft board, I would have drafted these guys for the Texans:
#21 WR Josh Doctson
#50 DE Bronson Kaufusi
#85 TE Nick Vannett

My top available players going into the 4th round with 2nd round grades:
RB Kenneth Dixon La Tech
NT Hassan Ridgeway Texas
QB Connor Cook Michigan St (REALLY?? He's still available?)

Guys I gave 3rd round grades to:
OC Christian Westerman Az St
S Miles Killebrew S. Utah
QB Dak Prescott Miss State (The DUI killed him in my opinion)
LBO Charles Tapper Oklahoma
WR Malcolm Mitchell Georgia
TE Jerell Adams S. Carolina
RB Devontae Booker Utah
RB Jonathan Williams Arkansas
OG Connor McGovern Missouri
CB Maurice Canady Virginia
DE Matt Ioannidis Temple
OT Joe Haeg North Dakota St

Well, I'm happy to see the first 3 picks go to the offense though it didn't exactly shake out like I was expecting. I suppose the defense will get a turn or two with the next 3 picks. If they go back to the offense, I'd like to see them go for a guard or tackle.... been some speculation that the TE position has been downgraded and will be used mainly for blocking in the future, i.e. more slot looks, more 4 wides..............

Don't forget the UDFA's that will follow the draft... Might find a gem or two there...

So, currently Texans picking once in the 4th, twice in the 5th and none in the 6th and 7th rounds...

Been in Pasadena, CA busy as hell for work and haven't been able to watch any of the draft live or listen to HTown radio. Sucks because this is one my favorite weekends of the year. What did the Texans give up to move up in RD1 for Fuller?

Not a huge fan of Fuller's, but I get the speed factor and how he can stretch the D. I like the Martin pick a lot. I like the Miller pick, but I'm not sure there was a need to move up for him. I guess if you want your guy, though... I see him as a slot, PR/KR, 3rd-down RB, and of course, wildcat and emergency QB. He's a good value pick.

Today is BPA day, IMO. Don't care what position it is, other than maybe QB, RB and WR.

And let me just say, the CA version of Pasadena is a hell of a lot nicer than the TX version.

I'm good with BPA, excepting WR. Not desperate for any position. Let some young guys on team develop hopefully.

I too seem to be very busy at work this year and least time in 10 years to look at mock drafts. Mostly thanks to Roy for his analysis.

Andrew Billings, Joshua Perry, D. Booker, Jeremy Cash, miles k, Alex Collins, K. Dixon, Jerald Hawkins, Westerman, Ridgeway, kj Dillon, Willie Henry, Sheldon day, and Jerrel Adams to name a few.

Roy P

Connor Cook goes to the Raiders to back up Derek Carr. The Cowboys get one of my Favorite Pass-Rushers, Charles Tapper from the Combine. Hoped that My Colts would get him. Joshua Perry was a guy I thought might be able to eventually replace Cushing. With Vigil, Schobert, and Perry off the board; I am hopeful that Blake Martinez might be a pick.

I'm sitting here looking at one of my favorite OL Christian Westerman on the board. I Preferred him over Nick Martin. However, Kenneth Dixon is still there too and I would have a very hard time passing on him since I gave him my highest 2nd round grade. Here is the measurable comparisons:
Christian Westerman Az St 6' 3 1/8" 298 3 1.79 5.17 7.69 4.71 25" 8'2" 34 11 7/8" 33 1/2"
Nick Martin Notre Dame 6' 4 1/8" 299 3 1.80 5.22 7.57 4.72 28" 8'1" 28 9 3/4" 32 1/2"

Westerman had 34 Bench Press Reps vs. Martin's 28. Westerman has 11 7/8" hands vs 9 3/4". Westerman has 33 1/2" arms vs. 32 1/2" Otherwise, they are essentially the same player, physically.

Tyler Higbee just got arrested last month so I dropped him down my board. Surprised to see him go here with Jerrel Adams still on the board. Very interesting. And there goes Miles Killebrew :(

Roy P

The Patriots just got one of my favorite WRs in the draft. It wouldn't surprise me if he is more productive than Will Fuller.

Tyler Higbee just got arrested last month so I dropped him down my board. Surprised to see him go here with Jerrel Adams still on the board. Very interesting. And there goes Miles Killebrew :(I've seen Higbee described as "an idiot" in scouting reports in reference to his off-the-field problems. Jeff Fisher doesn't seem to mind rolling the dice on that stuff.

Roy P

The Colts pass on the RB, but I am very pleased that Ridgeway is the selection!!!! The Colts now have a NT
Hassan Ridgeway Texas 6' 3 3/8" 303lbs 1.72 5.02 7.33 4.69 32" 9' 5" 24 9 3/8" 33"

Roy P

The Texans pick is coming up....I really like Kenneth Dixon, even with Lamar Miller on the squad. Westerman seems redundant with Nick Martin here. Dak Prescott is probably not the selection, though I would be all in. The TE Jerell Adams or even OG Connor McGovern would make sense.

Roy P
04-30-2016, 12:13 PM
They select Tyler Ervin at #119.
Using my draft board, I would have drafted these guys for the Texans:
#21 WR Josh Doctson
#50 DE Bronson Kaufusi
#85 TE Nick Vannett
#119 RB Kenneth Dixon

Another fast guy at RB, Tyler Irving, low 40 yd dash at 4.24.

Flexible at positions including special teams.

Any super fast safety or CB left on the board?

nunusguy
04-30-2016, 12:31 PM
At his size, Ervin looks more like a slot receiver than a running back. Spartans coaches got him the ball in the backfield regularly the past two years, however, and it paid dividends as he led the team in rushing in 2014 (888 yards, four scores) and 2015 (1,469 yards, 13 touchdowns). Ervin's likely to play a rusher/receiver/returner role in the Dexter McCluster mold on Sundays, as he caught 73 passes for 642 yards the past two seasons in addition to his rushing work. His ability as a kick returner (2,374 career yardage, three scores) should also earn him credit among scouts.

Good deal, he returns kicks.

Scratching my head over this Morrison pick for the Colts and how in the hell Kenneth Dixon is still available. He is going to be a steal in this draft. Then Ted Thompson takes another one of MY GUYS for the Packers. I would rather have Blake Martinez over Antonio Morrison 7 days a week. Just noticed that Thompson took Kyler Fackrell too in the 3rd round when Shilique Calhoun was off the board for the Colts, Fackrell would have been nice to have instead of La'Raven Clark.

My other nemesis, Ozzie Newsome takes my running back Kenneth Dixon.

And the Cowboys steal my QB Dak Prescott @ #135.

Nconroe

I don't like Cowboys, but I like that QB pick.

Roy P
04-30-2016, 01:08 PM
My best available starting the 5th round
OC Christian Westerman Az St
TE Jerell Adams S. Carolina
RB Jonathan Williams Arkansas
OG Connor McGovern Missouri
CB Maurice Canady Virginia
DE Matt Ioannidis Temple
OT Joe Haeg North Dakota St
OT Kyle Murphy Stanford
WR Keyarris Garrett Tulsa
RB Jordan Howard Indiana
LBO James Cowser S. Utah
OG Joe Dahl Wash St
TE Ben Braunecker Harvard
WR Charone Peake Clemson
RB Alex Collins Arkansas
S Tyvis Powell Ohio St
TE Beau Sandland Montana St
WR Trevor Davis California
QB Kevin Hogan Stanford
CB Anthony Brown Purdue

Roy P

The Broncos take one of my favorite Guards. Connor McGovern who I would have selected @#125 for the Colts. The Broncos get him @ #144.

Roy P
04-30-2016, 01:30 PM
If I had these guys already in the bag:
21 22 WR Josh Doctson TCU
50 70 DE Bronson Kaufusi BYU
85 94 TE Nick Vannett Ohio St
119 134 RB Kenneth Dixon La Tech

I would be looking to get Christian Westerman here to play OC. Since we don't, Jerell Adams looks to be a good selection coming up.

Is Akeem Hunt still under contract?

Nconroe

Yes Akeem Hunt, RB, still on roster. He was drafted in fifth r ound last year.

So 6 RB on roster right now.

Blitzwood
04-30-2016, 01:54 PM
I was pissed we didn't draft Jeremy Cash in the 4th. He's still there for our 5th round selection. We haven't had a quality safety in a decade.

Yes Akeem Hunt, RB, still on roster. He was drafted in fifth r ound last year.

He was undrafted. If I recall correctly the Texans signed him off of someone's practice squad. That's why I have no idea what his contract status is.

Roy P
04-30-2016, 02:01 PM
KJ Dillon is one of My Guys but I had Tyvis Powell rated higher. We still don't have a TE or DE, is that correct?
S Tyvis Powell 6' 2 3/4" 211 4.46 7.03 4.25 34.5" 10' 0" 15 9 1/2" 32 3/4"
S KJ Dillon 6'0" 210 4.53 7.27 4.43 28" 10' 1" 11 9 5/8" 31 5/8"

Powell has more speed/agility. Taller by almost 3" with a greater vertical 34.5" vs. 28" Stronger 15 Reps vs. 11.

DJ Reader to play NT. I hope he stays motivated and isn't like Nix. Even if I had drafted Nick Vannett, I still would have drafted Jerell Adams as the BPA. It would be a water-downed version of Gronkowski and Hernandez. OB knows how to run a 2-TE Offense, right?

Well, boys, I can't help feeling like this whole thing was somehow anticlimactic. Of course I was underwhelmed when they picked Watt so who knows. Maybe this will be 2006 all over again. The team deserves to have a decent draft every decade I would say.

I really like the Reader pick, unlike some, I felt he was a force for Clemson in the Championship game and Alabama had a hard time running at him. Mike mayock also just said "when he's in shape, he's a force to be reckoned with, had a real good Senior Bowl".

The Irving pick is a real head scratcher for me. Not that he's a bad player, but we just drafted Miller, who I think can play some RB if need be. That along with having Hunt. I just think we had a bigger need than another RB, especially one that high.

Tyler Ervin is a small gadget player. Trindon Holiday or Darren Sproles? Who knows, but he does have return ability which is something that I believe that they were looking for. Same thing with Braxton Miller. Personally, I would have rather had Kenneth Dixon as a potential player who might have to start if Lamar Miller goes down with an injury. The backup RB should have the ability to keep the same offensive philosophy of running the ball and not have to resort to Wildcat packages or bubble screens. It would also keep Miller fresh by being able to split carries. Ervin will have a specific role on Special teams and a 3rd down back coming out of the backfield for passes.

Found this info at scout.com, in 2015, Ervin rushed for 1,601 yards and 13 touchdowns, plus he caught 45 passes. His value rises when adding in his kick return ability. In 2015, Ervin had 23.9 yards per return and he had three kickoffs returned for touchdowns in his career. His final two seasons, Ervin returned punts where he had two returns for touchdowns.

His measureables in broad jump, high jump, and forty are pretty good.

Height: 5-10
Arm Length: 29 3/4"
Weight: 192 lbs.
Hands: 9 1/8"
40 yard dash: 4.41
Bench Press: 17 reps
Vertical Jump: 39 inches
Broad Jump: 130 inches
Short Shuttle: 4.34
3-Cone: 7.03

I find it funny that they explained his role as Dexter McCluster and then compare him to Akeem Hunt.

Where did everyone go? I'm asking a serious question because I literally do not visit any other Texans boards.
The message board format is dying all over. I think it's mostly been replaced by Twitter, but also by things like Instagram and Facebook and other social media platforms, too.

I've got no official idea of the average age posting on this site and others similar to it, but I am sure back in the days of HPF it was ~mid- to late-20s 15 years ago and closer to 40 today.

We saw it coming even before the old site was pulled (had plans to change formats actually before it was abandoned). Before I started this site and even within the first year or so after I did, I considered and had offers to totally redesign into more of blog format or something different. Bottom line, I didn't want to. I like the boards. I can write posts in more than 140 characters. We can dig deeper and not just soundbyte each other ad nauseum. It just isn't what the kids do to connect anymore.

The lack of emojis probably hurts us but I don't care.

I like this format. Perhaps need to be easier to find with the search engines and link with other Houston Texan sites somehow?😀🐸🐘🎍🏰

I noticed that there is a Twitter account. But I am too verbose to use it. So I end up just retweeting things that I agree with or like. :(
