Default Official 2022 NFL Draft - Round 1-7 Thread

What a difference a year makes... last year, the draft sucked as the Texans had no early picks. This year, the team is scheduled to pick twice in the first half of the first round. And GM Nick Caserio may have an itchy trigger finger when it comes to moving picks, as most recently demonstrated by his move up to pick #170 in lieu of 6th (183) and 7th (245) round picks back to the Patriots.

Assuming two of these are gone by their pick, who is the Texans' pick at #3? Frequent names mentioned include:

OL Ikem Ekwonu (NC State)
CB Ahmad Gardner (Cincinnati)
DE Aiden Hutchinson (Michigan)
OL Evan Neal (Alabama)
CB Derek Stingley, Jr. (LSU)
DE Kayvon Thibodeaux (Oregon)
DE Travon Walker (Georgia)

At pick #13, Caserio has dropped hints he is very willing to move from here, most likely down but up is a possibility, too.

All the Texans picks (as of this posting):
Round 1 (3)
Round 1 (13)
Round 2 (37)
Round 3 (68)
Round 3 (80)
Round 4 (107)
Round 4 (108)
Round 5 (170)
Round 6 (205)
Round 6 (207)

This draft is deep for DE and WR’s, and light on blue chip corners and OT,
so if I was GM, I would be selecting either Gardner or Stingley at 3, then taking best offensive tackle at 13.

A huge need for us is a quality center, although 13 is a little rich for Tyler Linderbaum, a trade down from 13 and selecting him in the mid-20s would make a lot of sense.

If we stay put…

3. Gardner CB
13. Penning OT
37. Jaquan Brisker S
68. Darion Kinnard IOL
80. Sam Williams DE
107. Pierre Strong RB
108. Velus Jones Jr. WR
170. Damone Clark LB
205. Cole Turner TE
207. Christopher Allen DE

Hope this draft yields quality players.

Worth saying this... especially since I was not a huge fan of his out of the gate, but the Davis Mills pick seems to have been even better when viewed in retrospect. Not only is this appearing to be a soft class for elite QB talent, the Texans have in Mills now one who has a full NFL season on his resume. And to boot, he actually flashed some impressive moments down the stretch.

Had Mills been in this 2022 draft, he arguably would have been considered at or very near the top of the class and as a potential first rounder. So if you squint a bit, it's kinda like the Texans have three firsts tonight when you add Mills.

Rumors gaining steam today...
The Texans may be looking to move up from #13. Interesting to consider this when paired with their earlier move this week to combine 6th & 7th rounders for pick #170. Taking that pick + one of their 3rds could easily be used with #13 to move up 5-6 picks tonight.

If that move doesn't materialize, then they could look to another move up to bundle a couple mid rounders with their 2nd rounder to move up, potentially as high as the back of the first round. Might be a good reason to stay up late tonight.

Looks like the Texans are already on the clock!!

“Todd McShay believes that the Jaguars will pick Georgia edge rusher Travon Walker. Whether this is because noted brain genius Trent Baalke still holds a grudge with Jim Harbaugh and refuses to draft Aidan Hutchinson because of it, who can know, but McShay states that Walker will be the first pick in the draft.

Detroit, who holds the second pick, will take the local hero Aidan Hutchinson with their pick.

That means, Texans fans, if McShay is right, and I’d like to think he is, the Texans are technically on the clock. And since the team has more holes than my socks, nobody has a real good bead on who the Texans take with the third pick. And that’s when the adventure really begins.”

Anonymous college coach quotes on Stingley from Bruce Feldman of the Athletic:

“The kid is uber talented. He’s long as shit. He wasn’t physical but there’s no question he’s talented. He’s an impressive athlete. I think he moves better than the other (top) cornerbacks. I’ve heard he’s a good kid.”

“I thought he was a finesse corner. He wasn’t violent at the line of scrimmage, but he has great feet and is a real technician, and his ball skills really set him apart. But you wonder: Is the drive or fire there? He had that great freshman year. I don’t know what’s happened the past two years. He’s got the ability to be really good. I just wonder if he’s built for it. It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets to the league and he does really well. But if he gets a second contract, is he gonna be the same player?”

“He’s got those long arms that pretty much touch the grass in his stance. I think he’s smoother than a sudden guy. Plays the ball in the air very well. I think he got a little bored at times. When the ball isn’t going his way, his technique gets away from him. He did fall off a little bit; maybe that was new scheme, new defense.”

“He’s almost like a wide receiver playing DB. His ball skills and the way he made plays on the ball are rare. It’s one thing for a defensive back to get in position, but his body control and the adjustments he could make in mid-air, this dude is different. He looked like a seasoned vet as a true freshman.”

Lot of us are old guys in here, might remember his grandfather, Patriots WR Darryl Stingley. The senior Stingley passed away in 2007 and was unfortunately best known for being paralyzed in 1978 during a preseason game hit from Jack Tatum.

If I had to guess, the selection of Stingley was an indication that the team was going to be unsuccessful moving up from #13 and took their guy with the best pick they had.

Lovie needs his CBs to make his defense work. The team previously signed Steven Nelson, so we will see a new secondary this fall. Some depth at the position, too, with Desmond King and Lonnie Johnson returning.

Lions just made a huge trade up to #12 and potentially snipe WR Jameson Williams. The Texans response? A trade back from #13 to the Eagles. Getting picks 15, 124, 162, & 166 in return. Lots of ammo for later tonight and/or tomorrow?

Moves and countermoves...

Remaining picks after Day 1:
Round 2 (37)
Round 3 (68)
Round 3 (80)
Round 4 (107)
Round 4 (108)
Round 4 (124)
Round 5 (162)
Round 5 (166)
Round 5 (170)
Round 6 (205)
Round 6 (207)

Imo, there is no way the Texans make all these selections. They either bundle some Day 3 picks to move up in either/both the 2nd & 3rd rounds or they kick some picks to 2023 (where, granted, they already have a lot of picks next year, too).

I had wondered if there was a connection. Now I know thanks for the information.
