Ooooo, Leinart gets sacked for a big loss. 3rd and 18 coming up.
Obie gets about 9 so Texans have to punt. Punt gets knocked loose on the reception by Barber and Texans recover at the Niner 15 yard line! |

Houston ball on the 20 or so after a fumble on the return. Time for a halfback pass. Let's see what kind of wing Chris O has on him.

The funny thing is that the only reason the Astros signed Carlos Lee was because Carlos Beltran didn't stay. The difference is that, in 2011, Beltran still had trade value.
What angers me about the Astros is they trade their productive affordable players because they allegedly need to slash payroll but don't trade their overpriced underproductive players so they keep bitching about cutting payroll while keeping the overpaid sluggards. When I was growing up, you dumped the bad players and kept the good ones. The Astros have turned that strategy on its head. |

False start Texans makes it 3rd and 13.
Obie gets about 8. Texans will go for the FG. Rackers 30-yarder is good. Texans 30, Niners 7 |

8:52 left in the contest.
(Jags and Bills going into OT, 32-32. I bet they love that...) Niners bring the kickoff back to their 22. |

Lions are drilling the Pats, 34-10. I guess New England finally got the memo that this is still just the preseason.

Texans penalized on the kickoff and re-kick.
This kickoff brought back to the 24. 1st down dump pass is dropped. Sack by Jamison! Loss of 5. On 3rd and 15, pass to flat gets small gain. Niners have to punt. Punt goes out of bounds at the Texan 26. Texans were holding on the punt so back 'em up 10. |

And what productive, affordable players have they traded? Pence and Bourn? Pence is not good enough to overpay for and he has one year of arb eligibility if I recall correctly. Bourn is a complete player and it was a shame to lose him but Boras is going to ass rape the team that signs him long term. I would love for the Astros to be a large payroll team that routinely resigns guys like Bourn with agents like Boras. But they're not. The Astros got some intriguing players in return for both of those guys that hopefully will help the club when they get good again in 2018 or so. |

The Lions are pretty good. I'm not telling you they'd beat the Pats in a real game but they are no longer the league's joke.

The defense kept the Niners off the scoreboard. As barret pointed out the Niners are terrible, but zero points is good I don't care who you're playing.

Leinhart looked better. Actually threw it to non-rbs. Ward has to be nervous. With our depth and youth at RB a fumble like that could doom him. Casey was a weapon in the receiving game tonight. And the 3rd hold was all on Tate for bouncing it when Casey had him kicked out. The 2nd was on special teams. That means I live with the other holding call if my FB has to be gameplanned for. And I can't believe that is the job Jim Harbaugh left college football for. They are talent starved on offense like no team in the NFL. |

and while the SF offense is terrible, their 1st string defense had not allowed a point in the preseason. They are not a great defense necessarily, but marching up and down the field and putting up 18 first downs before half time is impressive.

Arky,
You're a hero with these posts. I'm managing my son's baseball team in a tournament this weekend and couldn't break away from his doubleheader yesterday to catch the game live. So 2 weeks for Foster's hammy to heal? I dunno... I'd like to think Tate and Ward could still pile on yards on the Colts, right? |

I love this defense, love watching it. 3-4s are always more entertaining because of the variety of LB combinations used to rush the QB, but they are also more risky for obvious reasons. It will be interesting to see what Wade has in store for opponents in regular season when he takes the wraps off of his blitz packages ?
And the D also seemed to be more effective against the rush ? Didn't check the stats, but San Fran was running a big OLine, probably 30-40 lbs bigger per man up front and still don't think they were that effective in running the ball ? I thought Leinert was far more impressive than any previous appearance in this preseason ? And how much do we drop off with Tate/Ward in place of Foster, because that hammy could plague him off and on all season long ? |
