Everyone knows we are hard up against the cap. However, the cap is due for a MAJOR raise (50%???????) on I think 2014. Is there anyway we can offset a large portion of a contract into that year so that we can stay under the cap this year and next. I think it would have to be garanteed money and probably wether they are hurt or even on the team to get the players and agents to play along, but if we could that would sure help. I don't know if this is even legal and there is certainly some risk in doing it, but it would solve most/all of our short term cash issues. Naturally we wouldn't do it for all of the contracts since we will likely need some of that money in 2014.

Sure, it's called a roster bonus, a lump sum of money owed to a player if he is on the roster as of a date specified in the contract.

OK, then it sounds like something we need to do this year for a couple of our best players to make sure we keep them. However,to get the agents and players to play along, that will probably have to be guaranteed wether they make the roster or not. The others like Briesel and a few others should then be able to fit under the current cap structure.

Pat Kirwan gives a possible way to redo contracts for AJ, Antonio, OD, and Jonathan to get quite a bit of cap space.
I hope he's right and we can. Keep our playmakers and team consistency. |
