Default Official Texans vs. Titans Game Thread, 11/26/2018

Next up, the 7-3 Texans will be hosting the 5-5 Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football. The Texans are coming off a 23-21 road win over the Redskins. The Titans are coming off a 38-10 road loss to the Colts. Titans QB Marcus Mariota is iffy for the game after suffering a stinger in his arm vs. the Colts. The Titans are not to be trifled with and want to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot so this one could shape up to be a real slobber-knocker...

The Texans are 15-18 all time vs. the Titans.

Texans get the ball and can't move it. Punt to the Titans. Mariota hits Smith on short pass that goes for a 61-yard TD.

Titans 10, Texans 0

Boom! Texans stop the Titans on a goal line stand and on the very next play, Miller takes it to the house, 97 yards!

That was an impressive run by Miller. Longest in franchise history I hear.

Titans initially trying to take advantage of the Texans' aggressiveness on their D-line.

Vrabel's decision to hand off to the TE on fourth down has been a game changer. I'd kick in a close game in first half to take the points in that situation.

Texans open the 2nd half with a drive that burns 6:07 off the clock culminating in a Fairbairn 47-yard FG. Too many penalties to sustain the drive...

Texans 27, Titans 10

8:53 left in the 3rd qtr.

Marriota is truly awful. Tonight he played the best he is capable of playing football, the team committed no turnovers until the last minute of garbage time, they ran for 4.5 ypc, and they only started one drive inside the 18 yard line and that was the garbage time drive to end the game. So what do they get for all of that? 17 points. His best game as a pro and he checked down into 18 points. He holds the ball as long as all of the running QBs but without the big plays that sometimes come from holding the ball.

Last offseason the Jags looked at a superbowl defense and decided it should be partnered with a terrible QB with a high priced extension. They reasoned that if you put the two together you could win more than half of your low scoring football games. If they had just punted Bortles and signed Fitzpatrick or whichever McCown still plays they are probably leading the division.

This offseason the Titans front office will face a near identical choice with Marriota and as a Texans fan I hope they talk themselves into how 'close' they are with their defense.

It's just too bad the Colts fell into Andrew Luck or we'd be division champs for the rest of Watson's career.

That was sweet, a game that Texans' fans didn't have to sweat too much while enjoying a solid performance by our franchise QB and a powerhouse effort by the D, except for a couple lapses where we gave up some long TDs. No matter what happens the rest of this year, the top priority for the upcoming offseason is to get some offensive tackles who can pass block.
So how good are the Texans ? Pretty damn good I think.

Early line has the Texans as a 6 pt. favorite over the Browns this Sunday. If there was a trap game left on the Texans schedule, this would be it with Indy come in the very next week....... Browns are a young team learning how to win and should not be taken lightly....

--------------------------------------------------

Five Thirty Eight always has an interesting forecast. For the Texans:

96% chance to make the playoffs
85% chance to win the division
29% chance to get a 1st round bye
3% chance to win the Super Bowl

--------------------------------------------------

Texans are 8th in the ESPN Power Rankings. Lowest rated 8-3 team (of course!).

--------------------------------------------------

Will be interesting to see how OB handles the rest of the season. If things go as expected, the Texans will make the playoffs. Does he try to win 'em all to have a shot at the 1st round bye? Who does he sit and start to get ready for the playoffs? When things get locked up, does he "forfeit" W's all in the name of staying healthy for the playoffs?

I don't disagree with the 8th place ranking. But if you name the top 8 teams...

Saints, Rams, Chiefs, Patriots, Chargers, Bears, Steelers, Texans

Then you notice some things.

I think you can take Brees, Brady, Rivers, and Rothleisberger and you probably have the top 4 of the top 5 veteran QBs, all HOFers (I'm not a Rivers fan but he's a lock). These 4 teams build their roster with high dollar, high floor QB play. You could throw Cam and Wilson in this mix as QBs of the 10th and 12th ranked teams. Rodgers is the only high dollar, proven talent not leading a playoff team.

Then you have Goff, Mahomes, Trubisky, and Watson. These 4 teams have cheap rookie deal QBs with money spent elsewhere in FA to build a team that allows a young QB to succeed.

If you are an NFL team and you aren't paying for truly elite QB play, then you better not be paying for QB play at all. Paying for an unproven QB is the quickest way to ruin a team in the modern NFL.
