there's an article on GQ.com that talks about the damage done to offensive linemen's brains during their career. Basically, every snap, their heads butt with the defensive lineman's, and although their helmet protects their skull, their brain within the fluid filled skull slams against the wall of the inner skull. This doctor chronicled its effects and found that these guys were getting advanced protein build up that was characteristic of severe Alzheimer's. When I say severe, I mean like so severe that they've never seen a typical Alzheimer's patient that survived long enough to get that much protein buildup. The GQ article talks about all the cover ups that the NFL has gone through to protect its image, mostly disputing these claims with their own studies. Sadly, their studies are flawed and run by doctors who are not only paid by the NFL but also lack the specialization to do such analysis. Imagine an orthopedic surgeon doing neurosurgery, that's how terrible it is. This article made me really sad for the nfl considering how much I love football. I really really really really hope this measure is put in place...
