Given this 9-7 no-playoff-appearance season was Kubiaks 4th year I'd call it a marginal success, no more. And the old man seemed to be on the fence most of the year about Kubiaks retention but this new multi-year contract is clearly a resounding, unqualified endorsement of Kubiak. Very interesting ? Wonder why he had such a change of heart about Kubiak ?

Seems the players and owner and many fans like Kubiak quite a bit. They had a top passing offense, even with injuries on the OL and RB. Had top 5 run defense even though changed some staff and young players. Winning record finally, not bad from 2-14 about 4 years ago and built to continue winning. And could have been in position to win several more games other than a few bad plays by a few players, who maybe won't be here next year. So, consistency being part of the winning formula, this makes sense. And things can always change.

Good for Kubes, IMO he deserved the extension, no way they were going to let him be a lame duck coach. I know there are people clamoring for Cowher, Gruden etc but they are not coming here.
The players respect and seem to respond to him. I think stability is the smart move here, another good draft, keep our FA's and add a FA piece or two and we are in business. I think Rick Smith and Kubes have improved the 53 man roster each year, and I expect they will do the same again. Extensions for the assistants is also a smart idea, I think the Houston Texans are starting to be a place where guys want to play, not just because it is the last stop of their career. Having a coach and assistants with contracts beyond next year gives the illusion of stability. If they go 1-15 Bob M can still fire at will.

Kubes took a 2-14 team four years ago and made it a 9-7 team. I guess he deserves something. Of course Rik Smith had more than a little to do with that.

I think it's a good idea. McNair can always bounce him if its a disaster, and it establishes some continuity. We did some real good things despite a certain few breaks. I'd like to see a full year of the defense, rather than just 11, 12 games. Remember...we win ONE more game, we would have been in the playoffs.
