Default Holt to the Hags

The Jaguars have finally got a legitimate wide reciever. Too bad he is on the wrong side of the "age" line.

From PFT:
Jags Bag Holt
Posted by Mike Florio on April 20, 2009, 7:32 p.m.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have won the AFC South showdown for the services of veteran receiver Torry Holt.

According to Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union, the Jags and Holt agreed to a two-year deal.

Holt, 32, was a top-ten draft pick in 1999.

As Wright points out, the move doesn’t rule out receiver for the Jaguars’ first-round pick, the eighth overall in the entire draft.

The Titans also pursued Holt after he was cut last month by the Rams

Holt is going to be 33 next year, has had knee problems in recent seasons, and is definitely on the decline. I haven't seen yet exactly how much they paid him, but however much it was it's doubtful they'll get that much out of him. Maybe this pickup will make more sense if they end up drafting a WR and wanted him for more of a mentoring role...

No long a "Scare the hell out of you" receiver, but will provide SOME punch to their offense for.........awhile. Two years if they get lucky. It does improve them and that is never a good thing.

I'm honestly not even sure he does that for them. Holt's decline on the field the last two years has been pretty steep; I don't think they should even expect last year's Torry Holt, which, frankly was only a decent #2 receiver. He will likely be an upgrade for them, but that's more a comment on the sad state of their receiving corps. I think the only hope for the Jaguars with Holt is that he can experience a slight uptick without the knee injuries he suffered from last year. But his health is likely at least as much a function of age as the other aspects of his game that have been waning. And its not a big leap of logic to wonder if those nagging injuries may finally lead to something bigger that could knock Holt out of the lineup. Holt's been very durable (missing only 2 games in his career) but he'll also be 33 by the time camp opens and, as Marvin Harrison has become a pretty good recent example of, sometimes it just goes all at once.
