Default The upcoming Jaguars (#2) game, 11/27/2011

Round 2 of Texans vs. Jags will be an early CBS game this Sunday in Jacksonville. Injuries have hampered the 7-3 Texans this year but they will get one back (WR A Johnson), possibly two (S Danieal Manning) and break in a new one (QB Matt Leinart). All eyes will be on Leinart as regular starting QB Matt Schaub is probably lost for the year due to a foot injury. Leinart has had one start and one TD pass since 2007 so rustiness will be a concern.... The Texans are coming off their bye and have won 4 in a row - the longest current win streak in the AFC.

The 3-7 Jaguars look to get on track after losing to Cleveland 14-10 last Sunday. Rookie QB Blaine Gabbert looks to improve on what was probably his worst performance of the year (10/30, 97 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, 26.7 rating) in the first meeting with the Texans. RB Maurice Jones-Drew, TE Mercedes Lewis and WR's Jason Hill and Mike Williams are some of Gabbert's favorite targets. Jones-Drew is currently 2nd in rushing in the NFL with 941 yards and could go over 1,000 during the game.

TV = CBS (channel 11 local), 12 noon CST

Announcers = Kevin Harlan, Solomon Wilcots

Favorite = Texans by 3 to 3.5

A familiar face has resurfaced for the Hags:
@RavensInsider: Jaguars sign LB Kevin Bentley, place LB Clint Session on IR

I will say:

Texans - 21

Jags - 9

Again, it will be important for the offense to get ahead early so the defense can tee-off on Gabby.

I'm hoping to see a mature, consistent Leinert with little or no turnovers and we should win .

I'm hoping to see a controlled, confidence building 1st quarter, and then cut Leinart loose a bit in the 2nd to see how he does, and get some things on film. The Hags can't score unless its gift wrapped. If that happens once in the 2nd quarter, I'm confident we can survive it thru the 2nd half.
I'm thinking we put up 17-24 pts, regardless of if he can complete the deep ball or not, but we have to take some shots for future opponents.

Wouldn't surprise me at all to see Leinart go to AJ early on a play action but will it be a slant, a screen or the deep ball? If they get a completion, I think it will help the confidence of both players and if they complete a deep pass it may force the Jags to adjust their defensive gameplan. If that works, you hit them with Foster/Tate on the next series and on the third series, you play action to Jacoby with another deep ball.

That would pretty much soften up the Jags for anything we want to do after that. I remember from his USC days that Leinart has a tight spiral on the deep ball which should be something the Jags aren't expecting. They'll assume Kubiak wants to play it safe but I see no reason to do that. The earlier we hit them with this, the less they'll be prepared for it and the more likely they will panic when they realize he has not one but two deep threats in the lineup.

That will also cause some heartburn for every other DC who later looks at the film. If it succeeds, it will make it tougher to bring the safeties up to stop the running game which will make the ground game easier to dominate.

I think we see the bootleg throwback across the field play to AJ. That sends the message to the LBs and the DBs stay on your toes and be aware of the deep ball.

AJ is back and Leinart can throw the ball deeper than Schaub. Saw him do it in training camp on a regular basis.

Gawd....Is it Sunday yet?

This has been the longest bye week I can remember. With the success we've had, plus the unknown of Leinart makes what would have been a ho-hum game pretty exciting. Don't think this game will be close, but I'm so ready to see what he can do.

Hags are pretty banged up, 5 Def starters out for game.

@taniaganguli: So in the past 2 weeks #Jaguars have placed both starting corners and a starting LB on IR and there could be two more coming.

The spread sure has got interesting. Now up to (mostly) Texans by 6 or 7..... I suppose that has to do with the word getting out that about half the Jags defensive starters won't be playing....

Walterfootball.com last reported 92% of the money going on the Texans...

Whew! Losing Leinhart, having to put the rookie T.J. Yates in made for a pretty hairy game, but the defense pulled it out for us 20-13.
