Default WR Marvin Jones, California

2012 Senior Bowl practices come to a close today with the game set to kick off tomorrow afternoon at 1:00pm PT. One player having a stand-out week is wide receiver Marvin Jones. The Cal product put together a solid career with the Bears in spite of having some inconsistent quarterbacks throwing to him (sorry Kevin Riley fans)
Alfie Crow of Big Cat Country continued his in-person rundown of practices and had a few comments about Jones' Wednesday performance:
Jones continues to beat press coverage and drive defenders off in his cuts. He doesn't seem to waste any movement in his routes either and seems to catch everything. Jones also gives maximum effort on every play and held his own in run blocking drills.
Analyst Matt Waldman had more extensive thoughts about Jones that were quite effusive in complimenting the receiver. Waldman indicated Jones excelled in just about every aspect of the Wednesday's practice. He described Jones as a light-footed runner with strong change of direction and extremely sound technique, with great willingness and intensity in run-blocking. Waldman compared Jones' potential to that of a Donald Driver. You can read an interview Waldman conducted with Jones this week. It includes some really interesting material.
I bring up Jones in part because our old friends at Draft Tek projected out Jones to the 49ers in the 5th round.

Doubt that we could get him in the 5th round, but definitely don't have to use our first rounder on him or another WR to get somebody who might help us - this is a very deep Draft for receivers.

CBSsports.com has him ranked at #121, the 15th best WR. The Huddle Report have him as the 94th best prospect and the 13th best WR. Mel Kiper has him at #32 best WR, and then writes him a glowing review, go figure.

Jones is considered a possession WR who displayed at the combine a surprising 4.46 forty. He has great hand and he runs great routes. He would be a solid #2 guy for us, and an huge upgrade over Jacoby as a WR

He looked like a solid possession guy in his bowl game against Texas. Runs good routes, has good hands. He gets downgraded because he supposedly lacks speed and quickness for the pro level. If we haven't taken a WR by the third round, he'd be a nice acquisition and the sort of Rod Smith-like player who could be a surprise in a WCO offense like ours. He doesn't replace Jacoby if he's selected. He replaces Walter. We'd still need a speed guy to stretch the field which Jacoby can do and Walter can't.

I suppose there's some chance we might draft 2 WRs, if this guys not the first one we take he might be the second one ? Glad I've still got my recording of the 2012 Senior Bowl, I will definitely go back and check this guy out.

I like this guy. Nick Toon, AJ Jenkins, and McNutt too. I wouldn't mind getting one of these guys AND another WR TJ Graham.
