The upcoming 49ers game

The Texans face the 49ers this Sunday on FOX @ noon. (Looks like San Antonio gets the game but no go for Austin & the Metroplex).

The 3-2 49ers have struggled to move the ball ranking 29th in yds/gm (267) but are middle of the pack (tie for 15th) in scoring @ 22.4 pts/gm. Their defense fairs a bit better ranking 12th with 19.6 pts allowed/gm and 15th with 322.6 yds allowed/gm.

The Texans are coming off a nice win over the Bengals where both offense and defense (except for a blip in the 2nd quarter) played well for the full game. Let's see if they can keep it rollin'......

Texans favored by 3.

FOX announcers = Chris Myers and Brian Billick

It ought to be a good game. Singletary will have his defense prepared for Matt and Andre, but we have so many weapons now, we should win. We really need this game for the momentum, if nothing else.

loss, win, loss, win, loss, win......... loss?

Billick and Martz were giving Schaub and the Texans some props on the NFL Network (Playbook and Total Access).

Leading the league in passing TDs, 1st in completions, 2nd in attempts, passing yardage, etc....

Could this team finally say that we've found our "identity" {at least on offense}

NBT 10-22-2009 12:28 PM

Dang RP, don't jinx us! Seriously though, we just may have, IF we beat Singletary's 49ers!

cadams 10-23-2009 10:37 AM

this will be a telling week. the 49er's secondary is far outmatched by the texans' passing game. the 9ers do run a 3-4, which has historically given the texans fits, but if they can get some early success going in the passing game they should be able to slow the rush down. if the texans play the way the did last week, they should score 30+ points this weekend. if they do that, sf won' t be able to keep pace when they are on offense.

papabear 10-23-2009 12:33 PM

I'm not as worried about the 49'ers 3-4 as I was with the Jets. Their starter at NT Franklin is listed at 317. I don't know much of anything about him, but I'm sure he's a fine player. He doesn't scare like a Jenkins or Hampton would. It really hasn't been only the 3-4 that gives us problems. Dominant 4-3 DT like Haynesworth have given us issues as well....Of the course those are guys that give most teams fits.

Nconroe 10-23-2009 01:36 PM

Yeah, I'm ready for the Texans to show us they can win two or more in a row and keep playing consistent, good football for all four quarters of the game. Things looked good against a so called similar team last week, so keep up the good work.

On offense, if we can protect Schaub, I think we'll do pretty good. Obviously need to keep down the turnovers from Slayton and Schaub with no INTs.

On defense, continue playing the run tough, tackling tough even on the passes that are completed, should be ok there.

Keep up the good work on special teams and figure out how to prevent the blocked field goals finally.

Hope everyone is healthy and all the colds/flus, little knics and bruises are gone by Sunday.

For San Francisco, glad to have Singletary come visit his home town. And interesting to see how Crabtree does in his first game.

I'm sure SF will try to play a run oriented ball hog type of offense to keep Schaub and our offense on the bench. we just have to make sure our defense does a good job on their RBs, and get us some turnovers.

Kinda cool to think teams are scheming to keep our offense off the field. I suspect this year is the first time that most/all our opponents are doing that. Now if we can get them to worry about our defense that much, we will be in some tall cotton my friends.:D

The Texans (3-3) have limited opponents to 135 rushing yards over their last three games after giving up 615 in their first three.

Not even Cedric Benson, who entered last week's games as the NFL's leading rusher, was able to get on track against Houston. The Texans held Benson to a season-low 44 yards in a 28-17 win at Cincinnati last Sunday.

It was Houston's second win during its defense's best three-game stretch against the run in team history.

I'm wondering if the Offense gets going and gets ahead, if the other teams will simply give up on the run and start passing. I'm not sure if this is good or bad because of our Secondary. Imagine getting a 14 point lead forcing the 49ers to start throwing to Crabtree, Bruce, and Vernon Davis. Once the team makes a comeback against our defense, they may just give up on the run.

Moral of the story, we have to hope Shaun Hill doesn't come out looking like Dan Marino.

I noticed in the past few games that Dunta has been lining up with the top receiver. Last week he was on Ochocinco the entire game.... Do you guys think he will do the same with Crabtree even if they dont have any NFL film to game plan against him?

Hmmm....I doubt it. Vernon Davis is their best weapon and Bruce is their best WR. Crabtree is a rookie who has never played against another NFL team because he didn't play any pre-season either, or did he?

Crabtree is no, Ochocinco (even at full potential). If that DRob will be holding Crabtree, which is highly unlikely with Bruce on the other side.

IMO, I am feeling really good about their recievers. They are both slow. However, Bruce runs great routes. That's why I would prefer DRob on him. Hopefully Reeves can put some veteran handles on Crabtree, seeing that he has not been on the field with an NFL team outside his own.

My main focus is "Dont let Gore go crazy".

Albeit he is on my fantasy team. In the name of the Texans I will be benching him this week.

Damn, I didn't even think that they would brink in Alex Smith to be the "Passing QB" but I saw this one coming. ;)

Our Run Defense seems to be pretty formidable. However, we can't defend the pass.

It wasn't that we simply choked in the 2nd half or couldn't "make adjustments" fellas. The 49ers figured out what they should have seen on film. We have no answer for a passing attack, especially one based upon a TE like Vernon Davis or Dallas Clark. You better believe that Peyton knows how to attack this defense.

NBT 10-26-2009 04:13 PM

Now that the run defense has improved, we can't defend the pass. Jeckyl and Hyde again. We need to keep fine tuning to keep the other team guessing.

I dont think we ever could defend the pass. I believed all along that pass defense would be our problem. However, teams did not have to throw because we were so susceptible to the run.

On a lighter note, we have shut down two premier running backs in two consecutive weeks. Hopefully we don't make Trent Edwards or Losman look good this week.

NBT 10-27-2009 02:52 PM

Well, part of the problem was D. Rob's contract, or lack of, and the other was Reeves getting hurt. I don't care who you are, if you give the opposing QB enough time to throw, he and the receivers will beat the secondary. We need to keep the heat on with our ends and LB's.

At least Losman won't have a big day against us....
