Shocked at the honesty

On the official site they have an article on the draft. In that article they talk openly about the 4 guys they targeted to play LT.

Quote:

The Texans had been targeting Boise State's Ryan Clady, Vanderbilt's Chris Williams, Virginia's Branden Albert and Brown. The first three were off the board by the team’s 18th pick.
I don't think I have ever heard a team state by name the guys they wanted by name ahead of the player they selected. That is a new one for me.

If you do not read the article at the official site I recommend it, and watch the videos sometimes you can learn somethings. BTW in the video you get the tone that is hard to get from the written quotes.

“They wouldn’t have drafted me in the first round if they didn’t expect me to come in and contribute immediately, so I’m just going to try to soak up everything I can and learn as much as I can,” Brown told Texans TV.
**
The kids right, conventional wisdom usually means a first rounder starts early, sometimes in their rookie year. I got a feeling in this case though some
of the other Draftees have got a better chance of starting early than Brown.
**
Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan likened Slaton to New England's Kevin Faulk and New Orleans' Reggie Bush, and said Slaton would step in as a third-down back.
**
I like that one to. Little Shanny says we got a Reggie Bush like player in the third round.
Maybe soon they'll show us their Board. The Texans are being unusually candid in their post-Draft comments this year.

Most teams are reluctant to say exactly who they might have wanted instead of the guy they took because they want to schmooz the media into putting out that "we got the guy we wanted all along", b.s. and because they also want the player to think the team that drafted him had him rated really high.

You don't want to go back to your top draft pick and say "All the good ones were already taken so we took you...".

And that is just what they did...

I think it was meant as we would have been happy with any of these four, not we got stuck with left-overs towards Brown. Now with the other three going higher than Brown the only logical assumption is that he was the lowest rated on their board, but it's not like the Texans have never gone against the grain.

It really doesn't matter what the fans think, and if Brown seems like he was insulted then I'm sure the Texans are smart enough to show him their draft board where he was ranked the highest....doctored if necessary.

dude was probably excited to make it into the first round. I'm sure he's loving the Texans for believing in him.

If Brown was paying attention to ANY of the media outlets, then he and his agent probably knew that Williams, Albert, and Clady would be off the board before him. That being said, to be included with those top guys and saying the Texans considered him to be a "top tier" OT instead of a "second tier" OT like many people were projecting, SHOULD be a boost of confidence for him. Now the pressure is on him to prove to everyone that the Texans were right. :)
