I expect Gary Kubiak will be fired today as the coach of the Texans.

Well, despite what other's think, I'll be happy if this occurs today/now. At least it shows me McNair is alive and gives a crap. Don't really care what it does to our draft position. We'll likely have a top-3 pick, certainly a top-5 pick, regardless.

It's McNair talking. Kubiak is done! Smith is sitting next to McNair so I assume he's safe.

popanot 12-06-2013 11:34 AM

McNair:

"We have more talent than JAX and should not have lost that game" - LOL!!

"Wade will get a chance to interview"

"Case is the starter and should be given the chance to improve" (The loss and the way they lost was bad, but listening to McNair, I get the impression Kubiak putting Schaub in last night broke the camel's back)

I agree totally.

What does this tell us about McNair?

Was there a directive that Case would play no matter what?

Is Rick Smith gone at the end of the year?

I don't think there was a directive, but there clearly is now.

I didn't see the whole press conference, but I didn't hear anything about Smith's future. He looked pretty safe up there with the McNairs talking about the plan going forward, though. He needs to go too.

Warren 12-06-2013 12:02 PM

McNair did say that he wants a coach with head coaching experience and NFL experience. That doesn't necessarily mean NFL head coaching experience.

Whether it's the right move or not is debatable, but I think Smith is safe just because of his contract. He's under contract for 3 more years and I can't see McNair paying 2 GM's for the next 3 years.

Lots to digest here.....and I imagine it will all be covered eventually over the offseason.....

I'm surprised McNair didn't wait till the end of the season (not his usual nature) however, seems to me it was more a case of Kubiak losing the team rather than vice versa. Kubiak lost the connection. The players didn't quit - last night they played hard, they just looked like a bunch of undisciplined brats. I wonder if at some point, Kubiak became complacent about his job security and his own ability (How many times have we heard, "been doing this a long, long time in this league"). Makes me wonder just what the heck was going on in those 16 hour workdays....

--------------------------------

Kubes still talking up his boy Matt Schaub post game last night.....

--------------------------------

The mini-stroke thing was far enough in the past that this dismissal didn't come off as cruel or harsh.....

--------------------------------

Keenum fans won't have to worry about Kubiak half-assing his development anymore. Kubiak did a few things with/to Keenum he would never do with Matt Schaub..... McNair sounded like a bit of a Keenum fan himself during the presser....

Well, just glad this change came now and they can start search for the next head coach now, perhaps one of the guys in broadcast booth now.

Went through this a little when Casserly was a lame duck for the 2006 draft (the Mario draft). The front office season for 2014 is already underway in some regard since college scouting is underway.

I'm not happy Smith is still here, but I'd feel a lot better about it if his pro scouting department underwent a major overhaul. We can blame Smith for Ed Reed and maybe a few other missteps, but the team has not done in this area... maybe ever.

When you are 2-11 and everyone hates your coach and former QB, the local college legend is the only thing putting people in the already paid for seats. As long as Case is on the field you don't have no-shows and home booing. Those are the things McNair truly cares about. Keep the franchise/McNair respectable and you get unlimited patience.

I for one am not pacified by Keenum playing. This is a pathetic embarrassment of a season whether we get to watch an exciting/likable kid run around making a few plays or not. I also don't care whether Kubiak was fired today or in 3 weeks. There was nothing about last night that should have embarrassed McNair if the previous 11 weeks hadn't already embarrassed him. Make a change back at the bye week if you are going to make an in-season change. Making statements with 3 games left is pointless. These are professionals and the guy who does his job best wins. Get people who do their job best and that will impress me.

Nconroe 12-06-2013 05:59 PM

Kubiak released a very nice, professional, class act farewell statement.

Wish him and all who get caught in this the best in future.

It ended poorly but 610 was remembering a few of hilites from Kubiaks term here-
-2006 go 6-10, beat Indy for first time ever, FG by Chris Brown
-2009. End with 4 game winning streak, beat Pats for first 9-7 winning season
-2011 Got JJ, TJ Yates in, clinched AGC south with TD to Kevin Walters to beat Cincinatti
2011 beat Bengals for first post season win

Plenty other good memories

But this was Kubes time

painekiller 12-06-2013 09:30 PM

Kubiak took this team to a new level, and I want to think him. I also want to wish him and his family the best.

I know he will land on his feet.

HPF Bob 12-07-2013 08:08 AM

I've always liked Kubiak and consider him a smart and resourceful guy. He obviously cares about his job but the offense was just too stale and predictable. The defense always seemed to let down at just the wrong moment and, as the head coach, you have to own responsibility for that.

He gave us some great seasons. Hope he bounces back soon, both health-wise and career-wise.

barrett 12-07-2013 08:48 AM

I liked the offense and the guy and think both can still matter in the NFL. I really enjoyed him as our coach and thought he was good for us. His slow and steady was just what we needed off of 2-14 but it was never getting better than what he did the last 2 years.

I think the offensive issues are more about Jims and Joes than Xs and Os. He got top 5 or 10 offensive production out of Matt Schaub. I think he and his offense will be employed and successful going forward as an OC.

I also think Kubiak is just not a HC unless your team is led by the players. Without a Tom Brady or a Ray Lewis to actually lead the team, you can't have a bland, aw-shucks personality and expect to beat a bunch of sharks like the Harbaughs, Bellachiks, and Paytons of the world.

If you can't look at a FG to see if it goes in...you might not be an NFL head coach.

If you can't recognize your dead QB is dead...you might not be an NFL head coach.
