Give Babin a second chance?

Apparently, the Eagles cut Babin today. While his play has clearly dropped off from last year, is he someone worth taking a look at considering our injuries? Admittedly, I haven't watched him closely enough in Philly to comment, but for late season free agent options, he's probably about as good as you're going to get. Anyone have any thoughts?

Wade's defense is a very simple one so we are a team who could catch a guy up quick. And our edge rush has not been good this year. If a 1 year deal can fit under the cap then absolutely yes.

Like Barrett said, if we can fit him under the cap, I'm for it. However, I'm only mildly optimistic at best about his ability to do anything without his hand on the ground. That said, Wade's pretty good at his job, and our pass rush sucks, so it's worth a shot. He DID notch 30 sacks in 2 years not that long ago, so I'd give him a look.

Moot point. He is subject to waivers, and only due $1.6ish for the balance of the year plus playoffs.

We are 31 or 32 in waiver priority.

The Texans couldn’t claim him off waivers regardless because they don’t have the cap room for his current contract. If he were to slip through and were willing to play for the minimum (and a shot at a ring) for the rest of the year I think they’d have to take a hard look at him -- only 7.5 sacks by the OLBs so far this year, and that's including Reed. Babin was much better as a 4-3 DE than a 3-4 OLB, but Vic Fangio isn't the DC here anymore, either.

Nah, I'll pass. Seen a lot worse since then though I still have no idea why people want to put that crap all over their bodies.

If he clears waivers, why not take a shot?

Not sure about cap issues.

Andrew Brandt (@adbrandt) tweeted:
$1.64M. RT @Wade_Harrison If claimed, what's the new team cap hit for Babin? Original 5.5 or 1.6 balance?

If they wanted him, and he lasted that long in the waiver process, it would be doable. Of course if he did last that long, they might be tempted to try FA, and get him cheaper.

Last I read, the Texans had $2.7 million in cap space. You do not want to run this number down to zero as you may need it to sign that 4th string QB or something if the injury bug hits again.

This line of thinking makes sense.

heard on the radio this morning that someone found an interview babin did in philly where he was talking about his time in houston. the gist of it was that he knew he was a de and not an olb, and when he was in houston he always felt uncomfortable at a 3-4 olb. he went on to say that when near the end of his time in houston he went to talk to kubiak and told him that he did not want to play olb anymore and asked for a trade. and he further elaborated that he also told kubiak that he would not play in anymore games as an olb. if this is really the case no way the texans bring him in.

You gotta remember you've got the Capers-Fangio 3-4, then you've got the Wade Phillips 3-4. Not saying they are apples & oranges, but there's significant difference between those two 3-4 defenses.
But I suspect that Babin does not have fond memories of Houston and may actually feel that much of his NFL career was lost in Houston, plus there's going to be other takers for him and that would also come from other contenders. I'm sure Babin would love to be in a SB before he hangs them up.

Not to mention we have plenty of room for the guy as a DE. We are in a Nickel with a pass rush package for half of most games. For a million and change I'd pay this guy to do nothing other than put his hand on the ground and rush the QB on 3rd down.

Now that might be worth something.

Jags picked him up

Interestingly, 8 teams put in a claim for him. Didn't see all 8, but Jax, Oakland, Miami, and Cleveland were amongst the group.

A person informed of the Jaguars' acquisition who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity, said eight teams put in claims for Babin, including the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders. Approximately 10 playoff contenders were ready to make a run at Babin had he cleared waivers.
