Texans own FA discussions

I think Texans also can start talking to FA and signing or releasing their own by Thursday maybe. Quite a few quick decisions needed.

Yahoo sports covered Texans FA as follows

HOUSTON TEXANS: DL Mark Anderson(notes), LB Kevin Bentley(notes), DL Tim Bulman(notes), T Rashad Butler(notes), LB Zac Diles(notes), DE Jarvis Green(notes), WR Jacoby Jones(notes), FB Vonta Leach(notes), QB Matt Leinart(notes), DT Damione Lewis(notes), DB Karl Paymah(notes), S Bernard Pollard(notes), G Kasey Studdard(notes), P Matt Turk(notes).

LIKELY TO STAY: Anderson, Bentley, Bulman, Diles, Studdard.

LIKELY TO LEAVE: Pollard, Turk.

TOSSUP: Butler, Green, Jones, Leach, Leinart, Lewis, Paymah.

I'm thinking some of the player or there reps will be tweeting when they agree to terms. They can talk as of 9am? here today, but can not sign until Friday afternoon. That does not mean they can not agree to the terms before then.

The way these guys tweet, if they agree to terms they will tweet it.

Didn't Matt Leinart already get a pretty high tender offer (like 1st round). Seems like I read that back in April or May when tenders were posted.

Yep, but the tender turned about to be irrelevant due to time in the league.

So we get nothing for keeping him on the payroll all last year?

popanot 07-27-2011 01:39 PM

Looks like they're keeping Leinart:

Can't say this is a bad move. I have more faith in Leinart backing up Schaub than the big O. This spells doom for him.

Kubes seems to gush about that Tyler Yates guy, so I'm guessing that DanO is a short timer/camp arm, then he gets the boot for 8/4.

Side note - LZ Tweeted a few minutes ago - Okoye/Slaton/DanO cuts would save ~$7MM on the cap. Not exactly chump change for 3 guys that are pretty much useless for us.

That's alot of scratch to hold a clipboard....

@AdamSchefter: Matt Leinart's contract with Houston is a two-year, $5.5 million deal that includes $3.75 million in guaranteed money.

I fully agree with DanO being tough to make it, but I was hoping they could restructurre/ keep Okoye and Slayton around for fair value. Okeye may not live up to first round promise, although only about 40% do, he is being a reasonable player and might fit new 3-4 scheme fairly well. And Slayton could be an excellent weapon if he is over his neck injury.

We really haven't seen much of Leinert here, but he is several years younger than Schaub and I guess Kubes likes what he sees to make that high of an offer for backup role, although seems many backup QB's get good offers these days.

Was Leinert with the Texans last year during their preseason, or was he signed later in the season ? I don't remember him in any of our preseason games ?

Nconroe 07-27-2011 02:45 PM

looks like Leinert joined Texans after preseason right before first regular season game last year.
http://www.aolnews.com/2010/09/06/re...-joins-texans/

guess we will see him in open practice and preseason games this year

angrydre 07-27-2011 10:35 PM

That seems to just be something we do, giving backup QB's a bunch of scratch. Sage got nearly 3mil per, danO's deal was 3 years, 9.6 or something like that. We do that. Certainly doesn't look good for captain safety dance. I like TJ Yates, too.

I wonder if This signing is the prelude to a trade?

barrett 07-28-2011 08:14 AM

I don't think anyone is trading for Leinhart. He had zero value and little interest when we signed him less than a year ago and the only thing that has changed since is he hasn't played.

kRocket 07-28-2011 08:10 PM

Matt was rumored to about to sign with Seattle until Jackson signed and now they are looking at Brandon Mebane about to bolt. So maybe they are interested in getting something for him and we could use an NT. Just a thought.

Nconroe 07-30-2011 10:43 AM

Looks like Zak Diles was signed by St. Louis, he seemed pretty consistent, and then Matt Turk got signed by Jacksonville, good for Matt, bad luck to Jacksonville.

I think I saw Tim Bulman was re-signed.

Still a lot to go to get to 90 players by training camp start tomorrow.

Perhaps Orlasky to Colts.

painekiller 07-30-2011 12:03 PM

The chron.com is reporting that Dan O will sign with the Colts, I have never hoped for Peyton to be hurt so much. Maybe they are just getting him to be a camp arm, and then release him after he talks with there DC about our offense the last week of training camp.

Arian Foster is really a trusting guy on being paid and taken care of, hope it is a good decision, signing for 525k or minimum for his time in league. seems weak on part of Texans to me. ok, usually Texans are fair , but sure better not get injured .

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...-arian-foster/

popanot 07-31-2011 09:09 PM

He's a calss act. Unlike that golden-tooth turd in Possum-Holler.

Fosters situation almost makes me an NFLPA sympathizer, but not quite. But you gotta admit the Texans really have incredible, almost unfair leverage over him given the season he had last year and the fact that he can do so little this year to improve his financial situation, relatively speaking.
Certainly on a 16-game schedule, don't think we will ever see those kind of rushing & receiving stats for a back again in this franchise, not to mention being pro-bowl & All-Pro ? Perhaps McNair could kick in a one-time bonus for such a historic year, but probably a precedent he dosent want to set ?
