DeMeco Ryans - Out for Season

Demeco tore his achilles tendon and is out for the season. Dang!!!!

TheMatrix31 10-17-2010 04:45 PM

Killer. Absolutely killer.

sinnister 10-17-2010 05:23 PM

Ouch. I am scared to see the defense now.

Nconroe 10-17-2010 06:59 PM

Yeah, loosing Demeco really hurts. I am thinking Texans perhaps should do something they have rarely done before, make a few mid season trades to help the defense, perhaps using players and draft picks from future years. A dominant DL, LB, CB with experience is needed if we are going to playoffs this year.

While I am a HUGE Demeco fan, to say that this is a killer to our D.......uh.......really?

Our D sucks, and hasn't shown any signs or giving us any reason to believe that they will turn it around.

We're down to three healthy LBs as I understand it so expect some tryouts at Reliant Park on Monday.

We could do something exotic and switch to a 4-2-5 for next week with Pollard as a sort-of monster back. Not that our coaching staff would ever be that creative but it would sure confuse the opponent for at least a half and maybe having 5 DBs will make us better in coverage,

So we're supposed to be okay with having the best player of our already crappy D being out for the rest of the year?

Hm.

Nope, not OK, just stating the obvious really. We are, or very near, dead last in the league in Defense. Can't get much worse than that.

If our O is clicking, we will win some shootouts, if its not, we will get rolled. That will pretty much be our season from here on out. There was little hope for the D with, or without Demeco.

Hope Demeco recovers quickly, and is ready for OTA's next year.

painekiller 10-18-2010 09:18 AM

Sadly IIRC, most players that have this injury loose a step. Demeco does not have a step to give and the lose may make him a 2 down LB from here on out.

Hope I'm wrong on this.

I knew he was out for the season as soon as he got carted off. That being said I have a feeling the defense will play better for him the rest of the season. Also, the old and washed up David Beckham came back from this injury in 6 months. I expect the younger and stronger DeMeco Ryans to be at 100% before OTAs

I don't think this hurts us that much. Demeco is a good tackler and team leader, but he is not very good in pass coverage (where we have truly been killed this year). He doesn't cover well, doesn't blitz well, and doesn't drop to the deep middle well.

If Bentley is healthy (not sure what his injury is), or Sharpton can get on the field (?), we will see a small drop off in our run d, but not a big difference overall.

Demeco's replacement yesterday, David Nixon, had 9 tackles (7 solo) in the 2nd half. This is basically what Demeco does. Make lots of low impact tackles. In his career he has 8.5 sacks, 2 INTs, and 5 forced fumbles in 70 games. And in the last 3 seasons he has 3 sacks, 0 INTs, and 3 FF. He just doesn't make impact plays. He tackles guys a few yards downfield.

Ya, I agree with this. Steady, workhorse LB - I wouldn't put him (DeMeco) in the playmaker category..... And if I'm not mistaken, he has been nicked up lately with something going on with an ankle or knee (I can't remember). I think a 90% DeMeco is probably better than a lot of linebackers but what if we we're only getting a 75% DeMeco? DeMeco's "gameness" is well known but at what point does his production not really help the team? I think it's all moot, now - he'll have plenty of time to recover from all his ailments. I think what will be missed most is his leadership for the defense - making sure guys are lined up in the right spot, etc. stuff like that..

barrett 10-18-2010 01:50 PM

I agree. We will miss him most as an on the field mental leader. That's why I mentioned it will be important whether or not Bentley can play.

So the Texans get some Mormon off the street who contributes as much on
D as our 2-time Pro-Bowler ? If McNair hears this he's gonna be unhappy about all of the coin he shelled out to DeMeco this past Summer for his new contract.
