Glover Quin, DB - Round 4, 112th Overall
Someone for the "back end". Not much quicks or speed. Maybe convert him from CB to safety?

seemed like better choices out there but it does fill a need...and they are the scouts |

IMO, this pick is right up Smith and Kubiak's alley as far as mid-to-late round picks. Relative unknown, good athlete, good attitude and work ethic guy with huge upside potential. They took a similar guy last year in Molden.
This is a pretty good analysis of at him: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1115231 |
This must be the free safety pick, and it sounds like he has some ball skills. I think timing and instincts trump height when playing the FS position.
Don't forget our new "aggressive D" will need an aggressive safety. From nfl.com: Positives: Adequate height and very solid overall build for a corner or free safety. ... Has the strength to jam on the line. ... Likes contact, will bring his hips and wrap up in the open field. ... Good awareness, reads screens, play action and misdirection. ... High-points the football and had good hands for the interception. ... Breaks up passes by jumping routes or fighting for the ball in the air. |

I live in Albuquerque, and so have watched Glover Quin over the years, and we got a really solid player.
Hes a versatility guy, can play some FS and can play some corner. Lacks elite acceleration but is a good man corner. He has some serious ball skills and makes some great plays on the ball when it is in the air. He doesn't get burned but may have some trouble with some of the smaller faster receivers. He's physical at the line of scrimmage and isn't afraid to throw his body around. |
Sounds like a similar type of player (if not the same caliber) as Eugene Wilson was coming out of college - a player to groom.

Mayock thinks he can play inside or outside and just said it was a good pick. That makes me breathe easier.
This is one reason I don't pay attention to fans 7 round mocks or lists on the internet, there are just too many players that we have never seen/heard of and it is impossible to attempt to evaluate and grade these later round guys. |
I guess they're thinking CB. From the Texans' site:

I see the need, I guess he fits the bill given our last three years of drafting CB's. I am on the fence here. This isnt the make or break of the draft, but I was hoping to get more impact from this pick.
|
This is gonna be one seriously good value pick. 4th rounder that replaces Reeves? Possibly.

In the clip he looks to be playing alot of off man and seems to have good instincts and anticipation. I was listening to one of the pressers and Kubiak and Smith were talking about him playing nickle corner... but I think due to his physical style of play he could make for a pretty good free safety. We'll see how it all plays out but the transition could be a natural fit.
|
I think they are going to give him his shot at CB. However, once it becomes clear that he can't play there, they will move him to FS. If he can play CB, great, but a fall back to FS isn't all bad.

They keep calling him a nickle corner.
What does that mean for Bennett and Molden? Does that mean they're our fourth and fifth corners? Are they really giving a rookie the third spot right out of the draft? Or by "nickel corner" do they simply mean "not a starter." |

Didn't Petey sign with the BESF's? |

That makes me so happy on a couple of different levels. :D |

Assuming Dunta does come back, you'd think he'd be playing the slot since that seems to be his strength. Maybe by "nickel corner" they are saying they envision Quin playing to similiar strengths as Dunta. |

If that's the case, then we got the "poor man's version" of my two favorites in the first round. We got Glover who's a FS/CB tweener similiar to Malcom Jenkins and we got Anthony Hill who's an excellent blocking TE with pass catching ability in the flats, similiar to Brandon Pettigrew. Very impressive if this is the case. |
Now knowing more about Mr. Glover Quinn, a pretty good analogy would be a Malcolm Jenkins type of CB, but in the 4th round instead of the first. Makes sense.

I see your point, but I don't think Brice McCain's stopping the Texans from bringing back Dunta for one more season. |

Perhaps he will hold out until the preseason is over and finally "grace us with his presence" for the regular season. Even stubborn folks hate to leave $$$ on the table and I'm sure he'll start missing those game checks. Hopefully, he has something left after his injury and wants to prove to the 31 other teams that he's worthy of the money he's seeking. Hopefully, he'll also convince them that he worthy of a 2nd round pick for us after we Franchise Tag him again! |

If I were Rick Smith, I would be looking for a new home for Mr. Robinson, like right now. If he is not happy being here, and doesn't want to be franchised again, why not accomodate him? As RP mentioned, a second would be a pretty good price.

I just don't understand what they mean by "nickel corner" given the fact that he has (or should have) *at least* 3 guys in front of him. |

Molden is probably better suited to play on the edge at CB and is the guy to come in when Reeves or Bennett gets hurt. Quin has the skillset that makes him a better Nickle because of the types of players and routes he would face in the middle of the field. It basically comes down to philosophy of wanting the "best" players on the field vs. the players in their "best" positions that maximizes their strengths. |

“Well, he’s made some plays out here the first couple of days. He’s gotten his hands on the ball a couple of times. We’re playing him at nickel, also; (defensive backs coach) David (Gibbs) tells me he’s very sharp in the meeting room. He can return some, too. So there’s plenty of reps to go around, especially with Dunta (Robinson) not being here. It’s moved all those guys up as far as reps go, so he’s taking advantage of it.” (on what he’s seen out of CB Glover Quin) “You know what, he’s made two big plays. I’ve seen him catch the ball. I like the way he moves around and whatnot. It’s still early, but he’s made a few big plays out there in our passing game.” (on if Quin could play safety) “There’s a possibility. We have plans for him on the edge right now. He’s going to do some stuff in the slot and nickel, but there’s always a possibility at safety. He’s built that way, anyway.” (on what physically sticks out about Quin) “Just his physical stature. He’s a big, thick, good-looking kid. He moves around well. From the tape, we know he’s not afraid to hit. So we’re encouraged by him.” |
Sounds like he is fitting into the Jenkins-esque mold. Back-up nickel/back-up FS.
It either Dunta or Wilson get hurt, I think he'll be their back-up (Dunta in the slot at least.) |
Dunta has to figure out whether he is going to be a player or a smart ass guard house lawyer, greedy at that!
|
For someone I never heard of before the draft, I'm becoming rather fond of Mr. Quinn!
As for Mr. Robinson, if I were the Texans, I believe I would start threatening to pull our offer off the table, give his agent permission to shop him around the league, and see just what his value really is. |
