Schaub Out A Month

Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that Texans quarterback Matt Schaub suffered a sprained MCL on Sunday against the Vikings, and he’ll miss at least a month.

Taking Schaub’s place will be Sage Rosenfels, one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league (notwithstanding that unfortunate John Elway imitation, which cost the Texans a win over the Colts).

Over the next four weeks, the Texans host the Ravens in the Ike makeup game, travel to Indy for a rematch with the Colts, head to Cleveland for a game against the Browns, and then return to Houston for a Monday nighter against Jacksonville.

Rosenfels completed 21 of 29 passes in the second half of Sunday’s loss to the Vikings, generating a passer rating of 103.2. His 92.8 rating for the season is actually higher than Schaub’s (91.0).

On a somewhat related note, does anyone get the impression we'll be drafting a QB somewhere in or before Rd.4 next year? :( Perhaps they'll wait until the 2010 draft, but I'm sure there's major concern about Shabby's durability over at HQ.

Our only hope in this 4 game stretch is that Jacksonville continues to implode.

I think this is very likely. Although it may seem unfair, but after last season, it was very important that Schaub showed some durability this year. While he finished the Pitt. and Tenn. games, he appeared to be hurt by some of the hits he took and it clearly appeared to effect his play. He then missed the Indy game due to a stomach bug and now is out 1 month. That's 5 games missed and 2 games where his play was impacted by bumps and bruises. Also saw an interesting stat in the Chronicle. In his 24 games with the Texans, Schaub's longest streak of games started and finished is 3. Whether he's just unlucky, snakebit, or simply fragile, the bottom line is that to be successful in this league, your QB has to stay on the field.

Although it may seem like I'm jumping the gun, I have virtually no confidence that Schaub will ever play a full season. It seems like every time he is hit, he is slow to get up, grimacing and nursing something. While I'm probably being overdramatic, in all my years of watching football, I can't recall any other players who acted hurt as much as he does, or at least, so willingly let the other team see that they rattled him.

Sucks.

Schaub seems more and more like a modern day Chris Chandler, doesn't he? A guy with maybe some borderline Pro Bowl talent down the road but may never see a full 16-game season.

man, i don't know what to think about this team. i hate to draft a qb given all the other holes they have, but you can't win without a qb in this league, and i have lost much faith in schaub. he looked bad from the first snap. i think the play calling had something to do with it as well. i thought all week going into the game that they needed to start out the way they did against miami. lots of quick passes to get his confidence up and to get the defense on their heels.

As I mentioned last week, Schaubs biggest problem by far is his lack of mobility in the pocket. In games like yesterday where our o-line is getting beat consistently, that kind of QB is not likely to shine. He will get sacked more often than a mobile QB, he will throw more interceptions than a mobile QB, he will get injured more often than a mobile QB, and he will have more fumbles than a mobile QB. One play in the third quarter a rusher came straight up the middle and was right on Rosenfels. Rosey just took a step sideways and the rusher flew right by him. The next time I see Schaub do that will be the first.

I think Schaub is a solid NFL talent. He reads very well and is above average in accuracy. And his arm is pleanty strong enough. But a team which goes with a QB like Schaub MUST have the o-line personnel to protect him on a consistent basis. We're obviously not there yet, but maybe we'll get there. Our o-line is young, and if they continue to improve, maybe we'll only need a couple of upgrades. I just hope Schaub doesn't get killed before it happens.

We'll see what happens with Rosenfels, I don't think he can make the throws as easily as Schaub and he makes some dumbass decisions, i.e. Interception in the red zone, and helicrapper), but he also is more durable than Schaub.

Schaub didn't make bad decisions yesterday but he just couldn't get it to Leach on the run with the bum leg.

In watching the Sage interview on the main site at least he realizes he makes some bad decisions. Now will he be able to change since he has identified the problem is the question. If he can keep from making the stupid decisions, he can do well. He is, IIRC, better than Matt in the 15-20 yard range, but not as good with the long ball.

i'm getting there...schaub either has a great game, or is taken out due to injury. there is very little middle ground.

they need to make a splash in free agency for both lines i think. sign a big time OG and draft the center Mack (Cal?) to protect the investment already made in schaub.

If a person with an IQ of 75 becomes aware of their intellectual deficiency, it doesn't mean they're on the way to MENSA membership.

Rosenfels is what he is. He's been that way for 8 years and he'll be that way for 8 more weeks.

This whole thing with the QBs and getting them creamed Sunday after Sunday after Sunday seems to be a page Kubiak got right out of the
Capers playbook: bring a rookie and/or very inexperienced guy in to play LT to protect your franchsie investment. In Carrs first year here it was Chester Pitts vs the likes of Dwight Freeney, this year its Duane Brown vs the likes of James Harrison, Joes Porter, Jarret Allen.
I dunno, but that doesn't seem to be working out much better this time around than it did the first time ? Gotta be a smarter way to break in the
franchise QB ?

Schaub is what he is, a very good passer, but immobile as a statue in the pocket. Sage is very agile in the pocket, but doesn't have the innate talent that Schaub has to get the ball to the WR. If we could wrap up the good traits of both we would have a workable QB. Either that or get the best Oline in the league to protect Schaub.

I am getting tired of always having to make excuses for this team. They are now 7 years down the road, no longer can be called an expansion team, and yet they are still making expansion franchise mistakes. It's getting downright ridiculous. Do we need to get rid of everyone and start retooling? I hope not. However, something has got to be done to get this team off the schneid. McNair, it is time for you to step in and do what the supreme leader does.......lead. Put Kubiak on notice. Get this teams personnel up to snuff, and let's finally get a champion for this city!

Question.......What happened to Shane Boyd? You know, the guy that spent the entire training camp/preseason with us? Did he get picked up somewhere?

I thought about Boyd too, but I think they wanted someone with a little more experience. He looked decent in the pre-season a few times, but Boyd isn't shown on anyone roster right now. They must have just wanted more experience.

You might want to go see the clip then you would understand that he was pressing in order to overcome "The stigma" of being a backup QB as he put it. I am NO fan of Sage (like Matt a lot), but if he can get it to were he doesn't majorly screw up, we might be in modestly fair shape to have solid play at the QB position.

So because his interview gives a reason for his mistakes he can change them? Do you honestly think he's going to say "I turn the ball over, that's who I am."

Sage has been around for a long time. If you hold your breath for him to start doing something he has never done before you will be in trouble. Last year he had 15 turnovers in 9 appearances. That means he had 1.6 turnovers per game (not to mention a few were relief appearances so they drive up the average even further). This year he has 4 turnovers in 1.5 games for an average of about 2.5 per game. No team can win while giving it away like he does.

With Schaub hurt again, I hate to admit that our longterm answer at QB probably isn't on our roster. And the current regime spent so much on schaub that they may not survive it if he turns out to not be the guy. This is scary, since a QB and HC change would put us back into rebuilding mode for the 3rd time without ever doing any winning.

So in essence he's trying to prove he's 'starter material' by taking unnecessary chances to the detriment of the team. Yeah, Sage, that makes a lot of sense. :rolleyes:

If it took Sage 8 years to learn that "Hey, turnovers are not a good thing for my team, maybe I shouldn't do that," then I think I know why he's never been given the chance to be a starter.

In all seriousness, every QB knows turnovers are the absolute worst thing you can do, that generally you shouldn't throw into double coverage, you shouldn't throw across your body (particularly when throwing back across the field), etc. Heck, most have known it since junior high. However, knowing it and not doing it in the heat of battle are 2 completely different things. Sage is who he is. I'm sure he knows all these things in the calm of a Monday afternoon interview. However, in the game, he takes unnecessary chances. Always has and always will. It's one reason he has never been, and likely never will be, a starter.

In the meantime Sage is our saviour for the next month. I wish him well. The Oline are not blocking for the pass as well as they did last year. JMHO

I'm OK with Sage for a while... People haven't quite forgiven him yet for choking away the Colt game but he did have some nice wins last year vs. Tampa Bay, Denver and Jacksonville.... So, he's got it in him.... just gotta hope the turnovers (and there will be some) aren't the game losing variety..

I've been way out of the loop lately. Did the Texans file a protest about Allen's hit? Was Allen even flagged? Was he fined? Did he pass a breathalyzer afterwards?

What is it about the Texans that they never fight back when their quarterback is cheap-shoted? Remember Drayton Florence in San Diego last year?

There are times in this sport that you have to grow a pair and make a point. If it means twisting Adrian Peterson's knee into a pretzel a full minute after the whistle blows, somebody has to deliver a message - hurt us outside the rules and we will hurt you back. Do you think for a minute that a team like the Steelers or the Ravens would let Allen get away with that? They would send four guys after Allen's knees on the next play and would need to be pulled off him.

It's bad enough to have a team that sucks. It's worse to have a team that's sackless and sucks too. That has been the Houston Texans.

Jerry Glanville used to be accused of coaching his team to play dirty. Particularly Chuck Noll (whose Steelers were never choirboys either - ask Mike Barber about that) would complain. Glanville had the right answer. "For years the Oilers were laughed at because they wouldn't fight back. What they are complaining about isn't the way we are playing. It's that we are fighting back. They can't bully us anymore." There's some truth to that.

But if the Texans won't even raise hell with the league about it, as they apparently didn't with the Florence hit either, they'll continue to get bullied around the league.

Allen should be suspended for the length of time it takes for schaub's knee to heal. It was obviiously low, and intentional. The guy on top saw it coming and helped to push him into it. He should be suspended too.

He wasn't suspended. Just fined. I did not see where they said how much or anything like that. BS!

Pitts apparently separated Allen's shoulder in the same game. Retaliation?

I'm pretty sure that was Brisiel - not Pitts. Allen was quoted as saying it was Pitts but I think he's got his names mixed up. My DVR shows it as Brisiel. Brisiel put a Haynesworth-like pancake on him and that was the play Allen came out of the game favoring his shoulder....

Perhaps it wasn't a direct retaliation but I'm sure everyone on that O-line knew where all the disruption was coming from...

Winston was quoted as saying the OL didn't know of Allen's cheap shots until after the game and if they had known before then they would've retaliated. So no, I don't think Breisel's hit was retalitation.

Don't worry. After this game I am sure Sage will watch film and figure out that turning the ball over is really holding back his development as a QB. I am sure we will see a whole new QB next week after he figures that out.
