Manning - Let's go all in! On 2nd thought... I'm torn...
Figured I'd start a new thread just for Manning. Part of me wants us to go all in, be bold, and just go for it. The other part of me knows the risk and wants to stay status-quo and live with what we have. Couple of talking points:
1. Is an 80%~90% Manning still better than Schaub? 2. Is Schaub's current injury any less risky than Manning's? IMO, they're both question marks. I mean, if you lose either one of them, we're done, right? 3. Would brining in Manning ignite the roster or tear it apart? Although Schaub injury seems to be the less risky in that it doesn't appear to be career threathening (as opposed to Manning's), there should be some concern there - at least for the short-term 2012 season. Who's to say he'll be OK and/or won't reaggravate it? IMO, the biggest risk with Manning would be the fact that if you can't get at least 2-3 years out of him, you've seriously set your franchise back. Schaub probably covers us for 3-5 years as long as he's healthy. Regardless, this team probably needs to do something at the backup QB position. Is anyone comfortable going into 2012 with a somewhat questionable Schaub and TJ? |
I'm fine with Schaub's health as long as he stayed away from Yao Ming's foot surgeon. I mean, how often does a quarterback's foot take a hit? I don't believe Schaub will ever be the quarterback Manning has been but I do feel Schaub's best years are ahead of him and Manning's best years are behind him. Why would you trade Schaub's future for Manning's?
For what Schaub gets paid, you'd think he could have a custom-designed shoe to protect the stress point a little extra. Surely, with enough lead time, that can be done. Of course, Manning could also wear a neck brace but I think the neck is still more vulnerable to a hit than a foot is. Much of the Texans' roster is ready to win now. I understand that. Losing the QB could destroy the season but I thought Yates did great for a rookie with little practice time. Sure, he was raw but even a rookie Peyton Manning would have made mistakes and thrown into coverage a few times, especially against a defense like the Ravens. I think you "dance with who brung ya" and that would be Schaub, despite his occasional WTF interceptions like the one that cost us the Raiders game. Manning would change the entire premise of the offense which is built on zone blocking and play-action off the run. It would probably take at least half the year for our offense to adjust to the way Manning would want it to run. If Leinart is not retained (and I see no reason to keep him), there ought to be a decent back up for insurance if you feel antsy about Schaub but I'm willing to roll the dice with Schaub as the starter and Yates as the #2. |
I for one just don't get how people are over looking the fact that the guy might not be able to play at all, much less after he takes a hit. IF he can play, and shows teams in workouts that he can still fling it (which he has yet to do), then the taking a hit thing will be in place until September. At that point, your wagons are hitched permenantly, and you sure as hell better have a 1a backup (which we couldn't due to cap issues). While I was impressed with what he did, and the way he handled himself, I don't really want to see TJ for 15 games this season.
I'll take my chances with a possible gimpy foot with a fairly immobile QB. Oh, and there's this. Freaking Bud..... From PFT: And the Peyton watch continues. Despite a report that the hottest free agent since Reggie White, or ever, was done making trips, Peyton Manning will be conducting Rocky Top one more time when he heads Nashville to visit the Titans, according to Michael Lombardi of NFL Network. On Sunday, Titans owner Bud Adams made it known publicly that he wants Manning, even though the front office and/or coaching staff in Tennessee may not. Manning has visited the Broncos and Cardinals. It’s unknown whether he’ll visit the Dolphins. Some believe Peyton wants to play for the Texans, who have so far shown no interest in chasing the man who had a large role in Houston’s expansion team needing a full decade to expand their season beyond Week 17. If that’s true, flirting with the Titans could be the only thing that ever wakes up the Texans. If the alternative to having him on the team is to continue to compete with him directly, having him on the team may not be so bad. |
Hmmmm.......
"Inquired" is a pretty loose term, IMHO. From PFT: Well, well, well. Plenty of Texans fans think I’m nuts to even suggest that the Texans would be nuts not to pursue Peyton Manning. I still may be nuts, but at least the Texans-Peyton theory no longer is evidence of it. Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the Texans recently inquired about Manning. The Texans are now regarded as one of the six teams alive in the Peyton chase, along with the Broncos, Dolphins, Cardinals, Titans, and 49ers. The Texans and 49ers should have been at the front of the line from the start for Peyton. Either team would instantly become the odds-on favorite to win their conference championship with a healthy Peyton in the fold. Klis also reports that, along with other teams, the Broncos have been talking generally about a contract for Manning with agent Tom Condon. The Texans’ interest possibly has been sparked by the Titans’ interest. If nothing else, the Texans need to make it look like they tried to get Peyton, in the event he ends up with the Titans and lead them to the AFC South title. |
I'm not much of a better, so I would stay with the 4 years younger, but less talented Schaub.
#1 Manning probably doesn't want to play in the same division with the Colts, where he would have to play them twice a year. #2 I don't think Manning would like to play for a Bud Adams team, even though "Bottom Line" said Manning is my man. My People know it and will act accordingly. This, of course, is just my opinion. |

I think Peyton has some good football left in him, but I do not want him to play for us. We spent all those years trying to beat him and we couldn't do it until we turned the corner this past year. The last thing I want is for us to win the Super Bowl and have it be all about Peyton. I say let him go to the Titans and we'll beat them out on our way to the Superdome.
I really respect Peyton, but I want to beat him not win with him. |
I'm actually not that choosy about how we win our superbowls. We could recruit the enemy, while using bounties on the opponent and video taping the opponents walk through. As long as we are superbowl champs I'll be a happy fan. There is no 2nd place in the nfl as far as I'm concerned.

We might be grateful the Titans are now going after Manning (and his friend Steve Hutchinson) because, before that, they were planning to go after Mario Williams. Per ESPN.com:

I'm with barrett. Draft kids from all the colleges I particularly hate, sign Finnegan, you know, I don't really care as long as they win.
I guess I do care about how the players conduct themselves off the field. Anyway, it has certainly occurred to me that the Texans are displaying interest in Manning to drive the Titans' price up. |
You know damn well it's going to be Possum Holler. Not even Manning wants to deal with that Tebow mess. Just when it appears Possum Holler is cleaning house of all the jerks, they give us more reason to hate them. I hope like hell someone on the Texans D plants this guy right into retirement.

Finnegan signed with Jeff fisher, his old boss, per NFL network.

Manning to the Broncos.

Early rumors are that the Patriots are going to be the ones to trade for Tebow (McDaniels is back on their staff and Tebow's security blanket at Florida, Aaron Hernandez, is on the roster) but is backing up Brady going to be any easier than backing up Manning in Denver? Some Bronco fans are thinking of a straight-up Tebow-for-Ryan-Mallett deal. |
Alright, glad we don't have that sukker in our division anymore ! But I'm surprised, I was really afraid the Budster would snag Manning ?
The very least the Broncos get out of this is bragging rights about having not one, but both of the 2 greatest QBs to ever play the game on their team at one time or another IMO. |
LMAO at Shannon Sharpe:
"I guess Tebowing really works! You pray to God and He gives you Peyton Manning." :p:) |

The problem is TT would have to be willing to give up his starting QB dreams for at least a half decade while becoming a situational player/TE/RB/whatever else Bellachik/McDaniels come up with for however many plays per game. Not sure Tebow will be open to that after the "success" of last season. |
The best part in all of this is how Peyton screwed over Bud's entire offseason. No Peyton, no Mario, no Myers... :D
I can't imagine what the Broncos' fans must be going through... probably something akin to the VY pre-draft brouhaha we Texans fans suffered through. Tebow is a polarizing figure who is much loved by the "faithful". |

But for NE, Tebow interest might make sense. 1. They showed prior interest and just added the guy who valued TT even more than them. 2. Belachik would not be scared off by fan sentiments. He does whatever he wants and has no accountability to his fan base at this point. Not to mention no NE fan would ask for him to play anytime in the next 5+ years. 3. The arrogance of Belachik/McDaniels matches up with what a coach would have to think of his coaching skills in order to think he could teach Tebow how to play QB, 4. The creative appeal in having a piece like that and figuring out how to use it. 5. Plus Belachik LOVES players with roster flexibility. He regularly deactivates good players who don't fit the week's gameplan (even starters). To not have to carry a 2nd QB would be very appealing. 6. If they did want him Mallett is gone anyways. I am not saying it happens, but the deal makes a certain sense in both directions. |

Some Denver fans are thrilled at the idea that Tebow fanboys might leave town now but then others reminded them that now they'll be replaced by Peyton fanboys.
Same circus. Different clowns. "Cut that meat! Cut that meat!" |

And Jim Harbaugh did the same thing in SF. I wonder if all of those SF guys will run through walls for him after he declared his support for Smith publicly and then privately became the "mystery" team going after Manning. I also wonder how it affects the confidence of the no confidence QB that he managed to prop up with good coaching last year. Way to go Peyton. You haven't played a snap in a year and a half and you are already shredding the competition. |
[QUOTE=barrett;29754]Not only was there talk that Bud wanted him and his front office didn't, but he also put out a media ultimatum of sorts by saying "There is no reason our front office guys can't get him." So he managed to screw over both his QBs (which really means he has none), his new front office, and there FA plans all because he wanted a new toy/QUOTE]
Couldn't a happened to a niicer guy. Wonder how good Peyton will actually produce on a new team with a new surrounding cast. |
5 years, $96MM.
So much for that incentive laden contract the talking heads were talking about initially.... Broncos fans better hope he is healthy. Edit....maybe he did give them an out. Year 1 $18mm gtd. Yes 2 and 3 gtd. at $20mm per IF he passes a physical after next season. Haven't seen any particulars on the balance. |

Not to mention, Jacksonville is his home turf where he is most likely to find his comfort zone with fewer of the distractions of most major cities. The old ownership wasn't too hot about Tebow but the new owner - Khan - is (I'm sure he sees Tebow as a cash cow like none other but so what? As an owner, what's so bad about making money?). However, the front office is more sold on Gabbert. But, as the Bud Adams saga shows, sometimes what the owner wants becomes the priority. |

Yeah, Manning's deal is essentially year-to-year, with each year becoming fully guaranteed once he passes his annual physical, the only exception being next year, when years 2 AND 3 go guaranteed if he passes.
