Official 2011 NFL Draft Round 2 & 3 Thread
What I would do:
43 Stephen Paea NT 73 Dontay Moch OLB Paea is quick and strong, in a one gap system he should be a force in the middle. Would work in a rotation with Mitchell. Moch played for Wade at the Shrine Game, has the raw speed that few LBs have. Needs refinement, should be a ST gem, and has tools to play in places now. Hedge my bets option 43 Brandon Harris CB What I think the Texans do: 43 Brooks Reed OLB 73 Davon House CB or Jalil Brown, CB |
What I would do is move up to get Aaron Williams. What they'll probably do is stand pat and take Kyle Rudolph or someone to backup our ILB's or something.
|
They gotta get a pass-rusher with their next pick, and at the very least 2 of them with the remaining picks they have tonight and tomorrow. I'd be really surprised if they went to a position besides OLB, even corner, with their 2nd round pick ? All indications are the Texans want to get a vet corner,
and I'm thinking that the Texans have enough "inside-info" about when FA will open up and are confidant they can their man whoever that may be ? |
If Williams is gone, wouldn't mind seeing a Brooks Reed, Justin Houston, or Rahim Moore.
Need a S and an OLB today, IMO. Day 3 CB's would be fine. That spot should be addressed in FA too, whenever that starts. With Watt on board, we need an edge rusher to get back there and cause some troubles. A legitimate pass rush will work WONDERS for our secondary. |
I think in the second I'd have to go OLB. If we wait until the third most of the quality OLB are gone. With Watt being as slow as he is, we'll need some speed, maybe:
A. Ayers J. Houston B Reed J Sheard Marvin Austin 3rd round Brandon Harris Curtis Brown Ras I Dowling A Black B Burton N.Irving C Matthews B Carter L. Hankerson B Harris K. Shepperd A. Dent Martin Parker Jarvis Jenkins J Casey Drake Nevis |
There seems to be quite a few good OLB, CB remaining.
Wonder if they might now trade down to get an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick? |
PFT 2nd Rd. Mock has us taking Ayers.
Dowling, Houston, Paea, Harris, Moch were still on thier board, but taken in the 2nd. So, since our beloved Texans follow Mocks so closely....... We will take none of these guys. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...nd-mock-draft/ |
Modified Draft Board
Okay, we drafted Watt so the Bowers pick might be a waste and he may be off the board by the time we draft. Yet, if he's still there when we pick, I'd be inclined to take him anyway. Then again, I don't know the prognosis on his medical chart and it has to be bad if nobody drafted him in the first round. So, here is the rest of my best....
1 OLB Brooks Reed Arizona 6'3" 263 4.65 2 OLB Justin Houston Georgia 6'3" 270 4.62 3 OLB Jabaal Sheard Pittsburgh 6'3" 264 4.68 4 ILB Chris Carter Fresno St 6'1" 248 4.58 5 CB Curtis Brown Texas 6'0" 185 4.51 6 CB Brandon Harris Miami 5'10" 191 4.46 7 S Aaron Williams Texas 6'0" 204 4.55 8 CB Ras-I-Dowling Virginia 6'1" 198 4.4 9 OLB Sam Acho Texas 6'2" 260 4.67 10 ILB Martez Wilson Illinois 6'4" 250 4.42 11 ILB Bruce Carter North Carolina 6'2" 241 4.57 12 DT Kenrick Ellis Hampton 6'5" 346 5.19 13 S Rahim Moore UCLA 6'0" 202 4.58 14 CB Davon House New Mexico St 6'1" 200 4.44 15 DT Jarvis Jenkins Clemson 6'4" 310 5.03 16 DE Christian Ballard Iowa 6'4" 283 4.75 17 CB Chimdi Chekwa Ohio St 6'0" 191 4.38 18 WR Randall Cobb Kentucky 5'11" 195 4.52 19 S Deunta Williams North Carolina 6'1" 215 4.53 20 OLB Dontay Moch Nevada 6'1" 248 4.4 21 S Mark Legree Appal St 6'0" 211 4.49 22 CB Brandon Burton Utah 6'0" 190 4.5 23 DT Jurrell Casey USC 6'1" 300 5.04 24 DT Jerrell Powe Mississippi 6'2" 335 5.25 25 CB Rashad Carmichael Va Tech 5'10" 182 4.38 26 LB Colin McCarthy Miami 6'1" 238 4.59 27 ILB Quan Sturdivant North Carolina 6'1" 241 4.63 28 WR Titus Young Boise State 6'0" 170 4.43 29 OC Stefen Wisniewski Penn St. 6'3" 313 5.29 30 OC Kristofer O'Dowd USC 6'4" 304 5.12 |
Quote:
Watt is 6'5" 290lbs and ran a 4.81 - 40 and a 6.88 -Cone. Ayers is 6'3" 254lbs and ran a 4.81 - 40 and did not register one of the fastest times in the Cone so it wasn't reported. The 2 guys I'd like at OLB, Brooks Reed was clocked at 7.11 and Justin Houston turned in a 6.95 in their 3-Cone drill, so Watt did better than those guys in terms of quickness. Even the much-heralded Von Miller scored a 6.7 at the much lighter weight of 246lbs. So, Watt is NOT slow. |
I'm feeling pretty good knowing that at least one of your top 10 will be there at our pick.
IMO the most likely not to be there are Reed and Williams. I would really like Williams. However, I think at least half those guys will be available, plus some others I would be happy with. Ayers and Paea could be taken in the first 9, as well as Leshoure, Dalton and Mallett. Also, Pinkston, Bowers and Martel Wilson could be in the mix to go in the 1st 9. I would be happiest with Houston, Sheard, Carter or Dontay Moch as a bit of a reach. House would be okay, too. Maybe in the 3rd we could get Johnny Patrick, Sione Fua, Brandon Burton, Deunta Williams or Chekwa. By the way, I really like the Watt pick. I would have liked Quinn, too. |
Aaron Williams to Buffalo @ #34....
A Dalton to Bengals @ #35... |
So far the 2nd round is shaping up good for us if you assume our top objective is a rush LB.
|
Titans, Cowboys, Redskins, Texans due up next......
Texans oughta be able to get a need/value/whoever they want.... |

Brooks Reed, Justin Houston, Chris Carter, Curtis Brown, Brandon Harris, Sam Acho, Martez Wilson, Kenrick Ellis, or Rahim Moore. I'd be happy with Davon House or Jarvis Jenkins too.
Please.....come on Texans. |
Redskins take Jarvis Jenkins @ #41. Texans up next....
I'll take Brooks Reed for $100, Alex.... |
Brooks Reed! I thought for sure he wouldn't make it to our pick.
|
Another white boy ? Dang, the NCAA is gonna be protesting.
Sorry, sorry I really like the pick. He can rush the QB. Hey, isn't that Mitchs teammate ? |
6' 3" 263 4.65
Got anymore numbers at your fingertips, Roy? |
Reed had the fastest 10 yard split of any defensive lineman at the combine.

1 Pretty Fu(king happy Texans fan! I want my jersey!!! |
Thanks, Roy. I'm pretty dang happy my own self.
|
I have my eye upon Curtis Brown for the 3rd round. That guy can tackle and really impressed me at the Combine.
I am curious about Houston, Carter, B. Harris, Acho, Wilson, Ellis, House, Chekwa, Deunta Williams, and Mark Legree..... My sleeper NT is Jurrell Casey and I think Jerrell Powe could also make a good NT. |

We've got us a rush 'backer, now lets do something crazy and wild and move up and get another one in the person of Dantey Moch. Why not ?

Yes, it was Brandon Harris. The Consensus opinion was he was one of the better CB's after the first two. I liked Curtis Brown more than this guy, but won't kill the GM for making a move to get the guy Wade wanted.
|
I agree, this is three good defensive players we got so far this draft.
What did we give to NE to move up? |
Quote:

Texans give up 3rd and 5th round picks to move up and grab CB Brandon Harris. If you look at it as taking the 3rd rounder in the 2nd, then it only cost a 5th. i.e. two 2nd rounders, no 3rd, no 5th. Will have picks in 4th, 6th and two 7ths.... Texans through for the day (pending any more surprises)...
Harris is a little small for my taste but he is supposed to be strong in coverage.... |
What did we give up?
|
If we walk away with a NT like Kenrick Ellis and a FS like Mark Legree, I'll give this draft an A+

Can't complain so far... and I can't say I've said that about too many Texans drafts over the years.

Barring an unlikely trade, the Texans' night is over. Seems like the draft so far for the Texans are "safe" effort players. The trade up was okay but otherwise no reaches or gambles. These are all experienced players from credible programs. Not much surprise factor is likely. What you see is what you get.

OK Rick Smith has now had his best draft on paper. Watt is a solid pick, not my favorite, but a solid high motor guy. Gives us on the field options and off the field options with Mario being in his last season of his contract, and Smith not being happy with being in a 3-4.
Reed a solid pick at 43, I would have been happy with him, or Harris ,and then Rick Smith pulls off getting both Reed and Harris. Nice!!! Our 3-4 just got better. Sadly the lock out is back in place at least until mid week, so no FA signings yet. I am a happy campier right now. A much different mood then I had last night. |
