Charles Spencer waived.. [Claimed by Panthers, Later waived again]
http://hou.scout.com/2/771278.html
Appears he wasn't ready for camp or the 80 men we take to camp. Kind of a sad story and I wish him well. |
Not a surprise. It is a sad story that fat "Ronnie" had to run into the back of his leg. ARRRGGGGGHHHHHH.
|
A casuality of the 80 man limit. I hate that after all his hard work he never got the chance to at least give it a real shot here in Houston. For his sake I hope he gets a chance somewhere else. For my sake I hope he doesn't. I would hate to have to watch him play for someone else.
|
It too bad, but I had basically come to the realization that he want going to make the cut anyway.
I wish him well. |
Not suprising at all. Glad to see the situation finally resolved and now both parties can move forward.
|
I can see him trying to play for a powerblocking team like Pittsburg or SD.
If he can get himself back to a practice level than he has a shot at a different type of scheme. BTW Thank you for your effort Mr. Spencer and remember one door closes so another can open. |
**sigh**
How disappointing. |
Very, very, very disappointing, but I don't know why I'm surprised as this was all but a certainty when he missed all the OTA's.
|
well....we all knew it was coming....
still, i do feel that sinking feeling of disappointment. maybe he'll catch on somewhere? i know there are compensatory picks for the number of free agents that you let go (or something like that), so are there any picks for losing a mid-round pick to injury? |
I had hoped Charles could come back from his horrendous injury, but it was not to be. I suppose he could catch on with another team after some more work. Who knows? What I do know that I always pulled for him to make it back and I wish him all the best. We'll miss ya Big Nasty.
|
jeez, chester with the crotch-shot of a comment.....
|
After a bit more thought on this I came up with some speculation.
The biggest thing that Kubiak has been on about all off season in the 80 man roster limit. He has even modified the entire way that the team is approching TC and two a days because of it. It appears that Spencer isnt fully recovered. His leg and knee may be, but the rest of his body is not there yet. If he had been kept it is possible that he would sit 2-3 more weeks continuing to rehab. The odds of him getting picked up right now is pretty slim, 3-4 weeks he may have a better chance once he is in better condition and injuries have hit teams. Would it not then be a prudent decision to waive him, keep a player that can take the reps and help keep some competition up, hope like hell no team grabs him, and possibly bring him back once he can be considered ready again? I know it is risky, but we are talking about a guy who has only taken a handfull of NFL snaps, had an extreme injury, and has been out of football for almsot 2 full years. |

Football is a nasty sport at times. You either come back from an injury or you can't.
He played two games. Everything else is speculation about potential. At least this news isn't about Dunta. He contributed. |
Panthers have claimed Spencer off waivers.
http://www.panthers.com/Common/Article.aspx?id=34016 ohhhhhh.... I hope the Texans knew what they were doing here. |
Wow. I was so wrong about a team not picking him up. I hope he does well there.
|
The guy played two games so far in his NFL career and is apparently not close to playing in the near future. This should not be huge news that he got cut.
I think the only reason he is so highly regarded by fans is that he happens to play a position the Texans have been awful at throughout their existence. So we all view his unknown as preferrable to our past knowns. |
and we knew we had guys on the payroll who when cut other teams would pickup, first Gray, now Spencer. probably several more guys. the good is it means we judge the guys we keep as even better for the style of play we want here under Kubiak. Best of luck to Spencer in future.
|
man, it worries me a bit that the panthers picked him up so fast...

Spencer claimed that his leg was stronger now than it was before, and that all he needed was to get into shape. I have a feeling its a combination of the Texans thinking that he was not quite as close as he thinks he is....and maybe feeling that he didn't fit this scheme that well. Spencer wasn't in our plans as a starter, and I question whether it would have been better to keep Spencer's potential around and cut someone who has very little chance of making the team anyway....you know there are a few of those around. He probably fits with Carolina's scheme better.....I think they will be much happier with this X-Texan than the last one:D |

I just read where Spencer passed a physical for the Texans.....now that is not the same as being ready to play, but I am beginning to think that the Texans just didn't think he fit the scheme.
I think this has the potential to be a mistake for the Texans.....with his size though he could have chronic problems with the leg/knee. |

this is indeed a sketchy situation. it's not like the texans are in anyway at fault for cutting ties after 2+ years. but if they have rehab-ed him all the way to playing shape and then gave him away for nothing it will be another flop in the texans' everlasting LT debacle. i'm not totally sure i buy the "not fitting the system" bit because why on earth would kubiak draft and praise him if he didn't fit? why would they keep him going this long? he's got to be a better option than butler or salaam as a backup T, why chunk the duece? the medical staff must really not have liked what they saw... If they put him at guard instead of LT, even if he is a starter, then from what little I know about the zone blocking system it could be about the new system. It is my understanding that the guards have to be very athletic in this system, and that a big guy like spencer might not fit the system. All that said, I really don't have a clue what went into the decision, and I just have to hope they know what they are doing. |

I've also seen the bit about giving him away for nothing bit a couple of other places. My response to that....If Smith had traded for a guy who had only two career starts, hadn't played in two years, might not be ready to play to right now and/or might never play again what would the reaction around here be? If it was for a 6th or 7th no one would be too upset, but there were even a few complaints about the 6th we gave up for a known reliable starter in Myers. Everyone knew that the Texans were going to have make a decision on Spencer before camp. I suppose the Texans could have tried bring him to camp and then trade him, but at this point he wouldn't have much value especially if he gets to camp and can't participate. My feeling is that the Texans were hoping his injury scared everyone off, and they would bring him back if we suffer an injury to the line in camp. Carolina called their bluff, but if they didn't think he was healthy to go 100% in camp they didn't have much choice. |
cadams-i meant somewhere in the nfl, not somewhere on the o'line :D
papabear, i gotta say it sounds like you thought it through a little more than i did hahaha....i didn't even think about other teams' not wanting to trade for him...but...man this really has a chance to be a thorn in the texans and all their fans' side. |
once again the guy played two games for us. Its not like we sold Babe Ruth to finance a broadway musical here.

So maybe the Texans really did know what they were doing after all...

So it looks like we made the right move after all. Whew!
|
so spencer said it...now fox says it...if his knee is fine and he justs needs to get "in shape" why would they let him go? why would the panthers let him go?
|
well, if he isnt in shape, and it is a big enough issue that he got cut twice, they must think he isn't going to be able to get where he needs to be no matter what.

Roster spots are too valuable to hold onto someone that has as much baggage as he is comming in with. |
Seems like there were 2 storylines on Spencer. One was that he was doing all he could but his recovery was just slow going. On the other hand, there were rumors that Spencer wasn't doing all he could. Lance Zierlein repeatedly said that one of the primary reasons Spencer's rehab was so slow going was because he never lost the weight necessary to properly rehab and
Spencer bore at least a fair amount of the blame for his inability to recover. Looks like that may have been true. |
The guy obviously pretty much had a weight problem all his life. If he works on getting (1) the weight down, and (2) gets in shape, which goes along with #1, I would love to see us sign him to the P.S. Just wishful thinking.
