I do question if Spievey drops to the 4th, I think he is a 3rd rounder, but with all the risers someone has to drop. Newhouse is starting to get some buzz, so we maybe out of luck there also. McFaden is going jump up the boards after running a 4.40 at his proday. He measured in at 5-11 and 181, taller and heavier than thought. He is the guy missed by the combine invites that get drafted in the middle rounds. |

Using Drafttek's 3/26:
What Smithiak will probably do- 20. Kyle Wilson, CB (knee jerk reaction after letting Dunta walk) 51. Nate Allen, FS (Smithiak have been studing Super Bowl film on how to defeat the Colts) 81. Toby Gerhart, RB (Gerhart gives our running game a pulse after McNair does some arm-twisting) 118. Arthur Jones, DT (Okoye feels the heat after the Texans find Jones at 118) 150. I also realized a mistake Warren was picked before I grabbed him, so he was replaced by Jay Ross, a solid DT from East Carolina. I still have RBs A, B and C in this mock. Depth and more Depth. #20 S Earl Thomas 5'10" 195 4.44 Texas
#51 RB Ben Tate 5'11" 218 4.43 Auburn #81 DT Geno Atkins 6'2" 293 4.86 Georgia #118 OG Marshall Newhouse 6'3" 326 5.00 TCU #150 CB AJ Jefferson 6'0" 193 4.49 Fresno St. #187 CB Kevin Thomas 6'0" 192 4.41 USC #197 LB Simoni Lawrence 6'1" 232 4.59 Minnesota #227 DT Jay Ross 6'3" 317 5.15 East Carolina Earl Thomas covers up a lot of mistakes in the Secondary. Ben Tate is my favorite All-Around RB. Geno Atkins can get in the backfield and blow up plays. Marshall has the combination between Size/Athleticism as well as being a relative "bargain" in the 4th round. Jefferson & Thomas have size and athleticism - but they will need some coaching. Lawrence is my prototypical WILL and since I didn't draft 'Spoon, I'll take a flyer here late. Ross is a big body to take on double teams, but he has some moves to get in the QB's face. I'm pretty happy with this draft. |
Would Atkins play along side Okoye or instead of him?
|

That is interesting. The league is obviously tilting toward 3-4 anyway and IMO the Texans are in a position to also move to a 3-4 if they had a nose tackle. I was watching NFL.com and they were talking about nose tackles, even Cam Thomas and Torrell Troupe flying up the draft. They even put Mount Cody at the bottom of the 1st, perhaps.
We don't really have a NT (maybe DRob-2). Atkins or Ross could be one, I suppose. Does it take special skills to be a NT rather than a DT? I wonder if Kubiak/Bush would entertain that notion? I guess that would change our draft strategy somewhat, maybe an additional LB. |
Quote:
Quickness alone will not work, bulk alone does not work. Quickness with low end power seems to be the trick. |
Yeah, PK I remember Curly Culp with the Oilers in the days when they ran a 3-4. Forgot just how big he was sizewise but he was a college wrestler IIRC. That gave him an edge in the use of hands and leverage. Made a great NT.
Maybe Lamar Houston would make an acceptable NT. He started Texas as a RB so he has quickness and should have leg drive, but he isn't big by today's standards. |
Quote:
Position: DT-NT-G Height: 6-2 Weight: 265 lbs. But the OL back then only weighed 240's, so when Earl was 245 that was huge for a RB. But your correct in the fact that wrestlers and martial arts guys make the best front 7 guys. |
It's not easy finding a NT like Vince Wilfork or Haloti Ngata. The combo of size, speed, power, leverage, and strength is highly coveted. There isn't one in every draft. I believe the closest physical specimen in this draft is Linval Joseph. He isn't going to be drafted in the first round like the two prototypes because of several reasons. However, there are some strengths and similarities.
Pos---Name---Height-Weight---40------Reps-----Vert------20----10----Jump-----3-Cone--Shuttle DT-Linval Joseph-6'6"-328lbs--5.09------39------30------2.91---1.75----8.25------8.12------4.71 wilfork/ngata----6'3"- 340lbs-5.08/5.13-36/37-26.5/31.5- /2.96- /1.73-8.42/9.2---7.6/7.97---4.5/4.69 Now, I won't tell you that Linval is the next great NT just because of his measurables. I will say, that for a 4th round pick, I'm ready to take the risk that he develops into a solid starter who can stuff the run. |
4/2/10
Draftek has Joseph gone before the Texans' pick. 1. M. Pouncey G/C 2. B. Ghee CB 3. T. Gerhart RB 4. Torrell Troup DT 5. Myron Lewis FS 6. Marcus Easley WR 6. David Pender CB 7. Kion Wilson LB I would probably like Geno Atkins or Lamar Houston in the 3rd, but would be left with a risky pick for RB after the 3rd. |

Revised Draft Board
I got a run-stuffer in the 4th round. A little upset I couldn't get Geno Atkins, but that's why I keep wanting to trade down. Then again, I was able to get Earl Thomas without trading up, so that's good. I still would like to trade down in the 2nd round, though.
1. S Earl Thomas 5'10" 195 4.44 Texas 2. OG Jon Asamoah 6'4" 308 5.08 Illinois 3. RB Ben Tate 5'11" 218 4.43 Auburn 4. DT Torrell Troup 6' 3" 314 5.18 Central Florida 5. CB Crezdon Butler 6'0" 191 4.54 Clemson I can't pass on Trent Williams unless Eric Berry is still on the board. I don't see him lasting that long, but if the draft gods smile upon us, I'm taking Trent. In the 2nd round I was tempted to take Jon Asamoah, but since Trent Williams was on the roster, I decided to address the Secondary. I believe if we don't draft a RB by the 3rd round, we won't get anyone worth a damn better than any old RB we could sign as an UDFA (Arian Foster). The 4th round is some beef in the middle to help out Cody. The 5th round is a steal that has injury concerns causing him to slip. The 6th round pick may allow Antonio Smith to play some more 3-Tech and Special Teams help. I must be higher on Crezdon Butler than anyone else, but I think he could be our Nickleback. |
Quote:
I saw you mention earlier Stephen Williams out of Toledo, he'd be a great story considering he's a local product. I really like him and have included him on some of my earlier mocks. Here's what I came up with, in an absent Earl Thomas draft: 1. Brian Price DT 2. Chris Cook CB 3. Jonathan Dwyer or Anthony Dixon RB 4. Jamar Chaney OLB 5. Myron Lewis FS 6a. Jay Ross NT 6b. Lindsey Witten DE 7. Vlad Richard OG UFA. Joshua Moore CB Assuming Earl Thomas was taken by the 49ers, I select the next highest player on my board, Brian Price. He'll put plenty of interior pressure on the Colt's, Titan's and Jag's O-line. In round 2, I select Cook who I feel can start opposite from Quin and not be a liability in coverage. His size and athleticism should provide a boost to our secondary. I take the best RB available in the 3rd round. Next I look to bolster LB position off the edge, we're always susceptible to that with Chris Johnson in our division. Chaney is hands down the best OLB available. In the 5th we get lucky and find M. Lewis still on the board and the Texans go to the podium within 10 seconds. He will compete for the starting job at FS. The 6th round is focused on getting better, stronger and faster up front. The D-line has been put on notice. The 7th adds another piece to the offensive line, which has already been addressed through FA. Moore has a chance to stick if Molden can't stay healthy this fall. He'd be great in nickle packages. I really like this kid. |
Well done, Blitzwood. Obviously, I don't share the same opinion on some of your players, but I like your thought process. Getting some speed at the WILL is important to me in order to chase MJD and CJ2K. I've thought about adding Josh Moore at the end of my own draftboard.

The question comes into play, is Andre Anderson a short-yardage back? If he is running behind Trent Williams, he just might be. |

2:58 and 7:28 show some good vision. He caught my eye in the E/W Shrine game along with his WR teammate Jeremy Williams. Anyway, Terrell Davis was a 6th round pick, so why not? http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/p...;pageContainer "Goes downhill with a burst through the line when inside holes are available Good vertical to jump over piles at the goal line. Able to make one cut to head upfield, although he could improve his vision to find the hole. Carries the ball in outside hand. Keeps his legs moving and leans his body forward through contact to get extra yardage or break free for a big gain. Usually falls forward. " |
