I'm starting to wonder about how far away he is. I don't think Carolina would have picked him up this quick if they didn't expect him to be ready soon.

Spencer claimed that his leg was stronger now than it was before, and that all he needed was to get into shape. I have a feeling its a combination of the Texans thinking that he was not quite as close as he thinks he is....and maybe feeling that he didn't fit this scheme that well.

Spencer wasn't in our plans as a starter, and I question whether it would have been better to keep Spencer's potential around and cut someone who has very little chance of making the team anyway....you know there are a few of those around.

He probably fits with Carolina's scheme better.....I think they will be much happier with this X-Texan than the last one:D

not me really. i figured he would get picked up by someone who could afford to take a chance on him.

I just read where Spencer passed a physical for the Texans.....now that is not the same as being ready to play, but I am beginning to think that the Texans just didn't think he fit the scheme.

I think this has the potential to be a mistake for the Texans.....with his size though he could have chronic problems with the leg/knee.

burn points= +2

this is indeed a sketchy situation. it's not like the texans are in anyway at fault for cutting ties after 2+ years. but if they have rehab-ed him all the way to playing shape and then gave him away for nothing it will be another flop in the texans' everlasting LT debacle.

i'm not totally sure i buy the "not fitting the system" bit because why on earth would kubiak draft and praise him if he didn't fit? why would they keep him going this long? he's got to be a better option than butler or salaam as a backup T, why chunk the duece? the medical staff must really not have liked what they saw...

i had no doubts that he was going to get another chance somewhere, maybe even break back into a playing role somewhere...but...so quickly? the time frame bothers me with spencer saying that he was that close.

If they put him at guard instead of LT, even if he is a starter, then from what little I know about the zone blocking system it could be about the new system. It is my understanding that the guards have to be very athletic in this system, and that a big guy like spencer might not fit the system. All that said, I really don't have a clue what went into the decision, and I just have to hope they know what they are doing.

.

For the record, I don't blame the Texans for cutting ties at all. I'm sure there are plenty of organizations who would have just gave him an injury settlement right after the injury ass severe as it was. I was just really impressed with Spencer in the short time I saw him and wanted him to work out. I also really thought Todd Wade was going to be great (gotta keep myself humble) so who knows.

I've also seen the bit about giving him away for nothing bit a couple of other places. My response to that....If Smith had traded for a guy who had only two career starts, hadn't played in two years, might not be ready to play to right now and/or might never play again what would the reaction around here be? If it was for a 6th or 7th no one would be too upset, but there were even a few complaints about the 6th we gave up for a known reliable starter in Myers.

Everyone knew that the Texans were going to have make a decision on Spencer before camp. I suppose the Texans could have tried bring him to camp and then trade him, but at this point he wouldn't have much value especially if he gets to camp and can't participate.

My feeling is that the Texans were hoping his injury scared everyone off, and they would bring him back if we suffer an injury to the line in camp. Carolina called their bluff, but if they didn't think he was healthy to go 100% in camp they didn't have much choice.

cadams-i meant somewhere in the nfl, not somewhere on the o'line :D

papabear, i gotta say it sounds like you thought it through a little more than i did hahaha....i didn't even think about other teams' not wanting to trade for him...but...man this really has a chance to be a thorn in the texans and all their fans' side.

once again the guy played two games for us. Its not like we sold Babe Ruth to finance a broadway musical here.

funny and true

So maybe the Texans really did know what they were doing after all...

Quote:

Panthers waive OT Spencer; sign Riley

SPARTANBURG -- Coach John Fox said the Panthers waived offensive tackle Charles Spencer on Thursday. Spencer, a former starter with the Houston Texans who has a history of knee problems, was signed before training camp.

Fox said Spencer's knee wasn't an issue. "It was more about conditioning and weight," Fox said of Spencer, who is listed as 6-foot-4, 338 pounds.

So it looks like we made the right move after all. Whew!

KJ3 08-08-2008 07:05 AM

so spencer said it...now fox says it...if his knee is fine and he justs needs to get "in shape" why would they let him go? why would the panthers let him go?

cadams 08-08-2008 08:52 AM

well, if he isnt in shape, and it is a big enough issue that he got cut twice, they must think he isn't going to be able to get where he needs to be no matter what.

Two years of no football. Had he been 100% in the offseason and working as hard as the rest of the team he would probably still be slightly out of shape. I imagine his football skills are slightly degraded also, and he will need lots of reps and coaching to get back even to where he was as a rookie.

Roster spots are too valuable to hold onto someone that has as much baggage as he is comming in with.

Joshua 08-08-2008 11:08 AM

Seems like there were 2 storylines on Spencer. One was that he was doing all he could but his recovery was just slow going. On the other hand, there were rumors that Spencer wasn't doing all he could. Lance Zierlein repeatedly said that one of the primary reasons Spencer's rehab was so slow going was because he never lost the weight necessary to properly rehab and
Spencer bore at least a fair amount of the blame for his inability to recover. Looks like that may have been true.

NBT 08-08-2008 11:46 AM

The guy obviously pretty much had a weight problem all his life. If he works on getting (1) the weight down, and (2) gets in shape, which goes along with #1, I would love to see us sign him to the P.S. Just wishful thinking.

Meanwhile, general manager Rick Smith said today that the Texans could bring back guard Charles Spencer and sign him to the practice squad. After the Texans waived Spencer in July, Carolina claimed him. The Panthers waived him Thursday, saying he was too out of shape to contribute.

But at any rate, looks like there's a chance Spencers career in Houston may not be over quite yet.
