View Full Version : 2nd round Trade Down

Just as a thought, the 2nd round may be easier to trade down than the 1st round. Pete Carroll has stated that he believes Tim Tebow is a QB that he expects to be drafted in the 1st round. While he has signed Charlie Whitehurst to replace Seneca Wallace as the back-up, could he really like Tebow that much? Perhaps there is a different player other than Tebow that the Seahawks would like to select. So, going by the trade value chart, pick #51 is just about equal to picks #60 and #104.

At #60 I'd be targeting players like:
Brandon Ghee
Patrick Robinson
Toby Gerhart
Ben Tate
Montario Hardesty
Morgan Burnett
Jon Asamoah
Tyson Alualu
Lamarr Houston
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah

At #104 we could look for these guys:
Dekoda Watson
Mike Neal
Darrell Stuckey
Major Wright
Blair White
Kevin Thomas
J.D. Walton

I'm curious about the Rams and Sam Bradford. The interesting thing about them is that they need to take the BPA. They also "need" a Franchise QB. So, assuming that Shannahan falls in love with Bradford and trades up to get him from the Rams, that would move the Rams down to #4. I could envision something like this:

1. Wash QB Bradford
2. Det OT Okung (The say they want to protect Stafford)
3. TB DT McCoy (The idea is he's more like Sapp for that defense)
4. StL DT Suh (They get the best player, and extra picks)

The heat would be on then for a QB. Jimmy Clausen is intriguing because depending upon who you talk to he may be a Kyle Boller/JP Losman clone OR he may be Aaron Rodgers. Anyway, as long as the Rams like him enough to pass on Bradford, and with extra picks from their trade down; they could use #33 & #65 to move up to #20 to select their QB.

If we could pull both of these deals off we would have:

#33 CB McCourty
#60 DT Houston
#65 RB Tate
#81 OG Jerry
#104 S Stuckey
#118 DT Joseph

Carrols motive is pretty transparent, pretty obvious here for hyping Tebow, after all he's got not one but 2 first-round picks.
And on the subject of Bradford, I wouldn't touch him if I had a first round pick anywhere in the top 5, probably not even the top 10. A later pick maybe but after he injured and then reinjured the same shoulder (his throwing arm) all in a period of about a month and a half last fall while still in college, I think the risk is too great for repeated injury to that shoulder to make such a substantial investment in the OKie QB. But maybe the Rams (or the Redskins perhaps) will be feeling lucky on April 22 ?

Yeah but Sam Bradford has all those intangibles that you really like in a QB. I could very well see a scenario such as RP is painting.

I decided to go ahead and play this out using my dradftboard and DraftTek's 7 round mock.

Rnd--Pick---Pos---Name
2----33-----CB----Brandon Ghee
2----60-----RB----Ben Tate
3----65-----DT----Geno Atkins
3----81-----DT----Lamarr Houston
4---104-----FS----Major Wright
4---118-----CB----Alterraun Verner
5---150-----RB----James Starks
6---187-----LB----Simoni Lawrence
6---197-----OC----Joe Hawley
7---227-----K-----Aaron Pettrey

Yeah, I could be happy with this. I'll draft OL high in next year's draft.

Using your scenario I came up with:

Rnd--Pick---Pos---Name
2----33-----DT---- Brian Price
2----60-----FS---- Morgan Burnett
3----65-----DT---- Lamarr Houston
3----81-----LB---- Jamar Chaney
4---104-----RB---- Ben Tate
4---118-----OC---- Eric Olsen
5---150-----CB---- Myron Lewis
6---187-----CB---- Walter McFadden
6---197-----CB---- Joshua Moore
7---227-----RS---- Trindon Holliday

Yea, I'd be good with this draft.

OK, I've thought it over and have adjusted my board and compared it to THR's value board. I really want an OG to start, so this is what I got...

2---33--CB---Brandon Ghee
2---60--OG--Jon Asamoah
3---65--RB---Ben Tate
3---81--DT--Geno Atkins
4--104--DT--Linval Joseph
4--118--S----Darrell Stuckey
5--150--CB---Alterraun Verner
6--187--LB---Simoni Lawrence
6--197--OC---Joe Hawley
7--227--K----Aaron Pettrey

Asamoah probably improves the running game more than an extra RB in the 5th round. I get more run defense out of Linval Joseph than Houston. Stuckey is underrated in the passing defense, but he is servicable. At any rate, I like this one more.

OK i'll play:

2 33 Kareem Jackson Alabama CB
2 60 Tyson Alualu California DT43
3 65 Akwasi Owusu-Ansah CB Indiana (PA)
3 81 Lamarr Houston Texas DT43
4 104 Donovan Warren Michigan CB
4 118 Marshall Newhouse TCU OG
5 150 Lonyae Miller Fresno State RB
6 187 Deji Karim Southern Illinois RB
6 197 Adam Ulatoski Texas OT/OG
7 227 Jameson Konz Kent State FB/WR/HB/TE/LB/ST

Jackson will need to push for starting time, Owusu-Ansah or Warren can be moved to safety. Two high motor DT to add to the rotation, both can pass rush.
Miller, Karim and Konz all should get time on the field. Konz and Casey can play 3+ positions and save roster spots and create match up issues for defenses. Ulatoski can be groomed to play LG, and Newhouse the RG.

What about a trade up in the second round? Giving up this years 2nd and a 2011 3rd to move up in the second round is something that I could see this team doing to get that player that starter they want. Any thoughts?

I can see this. The Texans are very young and need some help in the secondary if they go another direction in the first. I could also see them trying to get another second round pick by trading up from 3rd round this year.

I don't think I can improve on this anymore. Pass rush, OL, Running game, Secondary are all addressed. I have JD Booty and Marcus Freeman already so no need for a QB or WILL depth. Perhaps I can get WR Scott Long and PK Aaron Pettrey as UDFAs. Maybe I'll even bring in P Mike Brandtner from Iowa State.
