Ok, most of you have seen the 7 round mock drafts that DraftTek puts out. However, you can make trades and establish your own priorities for your team and then run a simulation. This can be quite useful information Anyway, many folks around here have voiced the opinion that trading down is a good idea to improve depth and fill holes. So, I traded the #20 pick to the Big Tuna. Miami in turn gave the Texans picks 43, 73, 107, 163, 164, and 169.
Armed with many picks to play with, BPA became more important than need filling. The Simulator drafted the following players for the Texans.

43 Houston Dominique Franks CB Oklahoma
50 Houston Ryan Mathews RBF Fresno State
73 Houston T.J. Ward FS Oregon
83 Houston Lamarr Houston DT43 Texas
107 Houston A.J. Edds OLB43 Iowa
115 Houston Kyle Calloway OT Iowa
146 Houston Ted Larsen OG North Carolina State
163 Houston C.J. Wilson DE43 East Carolina
164 Houston Riley Cooper WRF Florida
169 Houston John Skelton QB Fordham
177 Houston Harry Coleman SS LSU
187 Houston Richard Dickson FB LSU
211 Houston Andre Roberts WRS Citadel

When I went through the Mock with my draftboard, this was who I came away with:
43 CB Kyle Wilson 5'10" 185 4.42 Boise St
50 WR *Arrelious Benn 6'2" 214 4.50 Illinois
72 RB Anthony Dixon 6'1" 235 4.59 Mississippi St
83 DT Cam Thomas 6'4" 331 5.18 North Carolina
107 LB AJ Edds 6'4" 246 4.68 Iowa
115 OT Kyle Calloway 6'6" 320 5.28 Iowa
146 FS Myron Lewis 6'2" 205 4.52 Vanderbilt
163 QB John Skelton 6'5" 245 4.88 Fordham
164 DT Corey Peters 6'3" 295 4.95 Kentucky
169 S Nick Polk 5'11" 213 4.54 Indiana
177 OC John Estes 6'2" 295 5.22 Hawaii
187 DE Lindsey Witten 6'4" 248 4.68 Connecticut
211OG Marshall Newhouse 6'3" 326 5.06 TCU

Okay, I realize that there's probably no deal with Miami, but I just like the way this keeps going. Hit it again, and this is my loot....

43 CB Devin McCourty 5'11" 188 4.47 Rutgers
50 WR Arrelious Benn 6'2" 214 4.50 Illinois
73 LG Mike Johnson 6'5" 305 5.38 Alabama
83 CB Brandon Ghee 6'0" 191 4.45 Wake Forest
107 RB Ben Tate 5'11" 218 4.50 Auburn
115 RG Kyle Calloway 6'6" 320 5.28 Iowa
146 NT Linval Joseph 6'6" 322 5.32 East Carolina
163 DT Jay Ross 6'3" 317 5.09 East Carolina
164 OC Ted Larsen 6'2" 300 5.24 North Carolina St
169 QB John Skelton 6'5" 245 4.88 Fordham
177 S Robert Johnson 6'2" 200 4.52 Utah
187 LB Pat Angerer 6'0" 235 4.52 Iowa
211 DE Junior Galette 6'2" 244 4.63 Stillman College

I don't know if I have Ghee play FS or just leave him at CB. If Robert Johnson can play FS then (you can't have too many good CBs). I can't say that want to draft a WR, but Benn is just too good to pass up at #50. The trenches get beefed up with Johnson, Calloway, and Larsen on offense and the ECU Pirates remain teammates on the DL when I selected Joseph and Ross back to back. With soo many picks, I could grab my QB project as well as a DE/LB from a small school who will at least contribute on Special Teams. I think the steal of this scenario is Ben Tate and McCourty addressed the biggest need the team has if Dunta Robinson is gone. McCourty at #43 is probably as good as any CB we'd be able to select at #20.

I did not say it was great, only not bad. Which on my scale is pretty low. Problem is the 1st round pick sucks and there is no one I really want to take until the 2nd. And then there are 12 guys.

Which is why I did not cherry pick

Draft revision 17 Feb 16.
20 Jonathan Dwyer Georgia Tech RBF
50 Syd'Quan Thompson California CB
83 Rodger Saffold OT/OG Indiana
115 Major Wright FS Florida
146 Geno Atkins DT43 Georgia
177 C.J. Wilson DE43 East Carolina
187 John Skelton QB Fordham
211 Antonio Coleman OLB43 Auburn

Not a bad draft.

This is who I would have drafted without trade-downs using My Guys.

20. OT Trent Williams 6'5" 308 5.30 Oklahoma
50. WR Arrelious Benn 6'2" 214 4.50 Illinois
83. RB Toby Gerhart 6'1" 235 4.55 Stanford
115. DT Linval Joseph 6'6" 322 5.32 East Carolina
146. DT Mike Neal 6'3" 300 4.96 Purdue
177. S Robert Johnson 6'2" 200 4.52 Utah
187. OG Marshall Newhouse 6'3" 326 5.06 TCU
211. CB Patrick Stoudamire 5'11" 198 4.49 Western Illinois

I think the OL would be very much improved with Williams and Newhouse. The DL play would be improved too if Joseph is the player I thought Okam could be. Benn was simply a BPA pick in the 2nd round, that made me want to slide him down my board after the draft because I didn't really make an impact splash on the Secondary. I like Gerhart, but again could have gotten Ben Tate in the next round. I could have gotten Linval Joseph at #146 in this mock (drafted #175). It would have been perfect if CB Donovan Warren had been available at #83 (he was drafted #82)

20 OT T. Williams
50. DT T. Alualu
83. CB D. Warren
115. RB B. Tate
146. DT L. Joseph

This isn't using the simulator, but Draftek finally has a mock and players available that I would be happy with just about any combination.

I only am doing the first 4 rounds.

Draftek:

1. J. Dwyer RB
2. J Asomoah OG3
3. A. Benn WR
4. Chris Cook FS

I could be happy with that draft. Here are some other possibilities, according to Draftek. All these mocks have a lot of disparity as to where a lot of players will be taken. I have seen Myron Rolle anywhere from the 2nd round to the 6th round. Anyway, here are several combinations available according to Draftek that look appealing to me.

1. M. Iupati OG
2. K. Wilson CB
3. Tobe Gerhart RB
4. John Jerry OG

1. Maurkice Pouncey C/OG
2. J. Asamoah OG
3. Donovan Warren CB
4. Ben Tate RB

1. Brian Price DT
2. Perrish Cox CB
3. Cam Thomas DT
4. Mitch Petrus OG

1. Sean Weatherspoon OLB
2. J.D. Walton C
3. Donovan Warren CB
4. Joique Bell RB

Other available 4th round guys I think would be good values are:

Zane Beadles OL
A.J. Edds OLB
Mike Williams WR

I think you could mix and match a lot of different ways and come up with a good draft.

83 Arrelious Benn WRF Illinois
115 Chris Cook FS Virginia
146 D'Anthony Smith DT43 Louisiana Tech
177 C.J. Wilson DE43 East Carolina

MY Cherry Pick

20 Mike Iupati Idaho OG
50 Kyle Wilson Boise State CB
83 Amari Spievey CB Iowa
115 A.J. Edds OLB43 Iowa
146 James Starks RBF Buffalo
177 Andre Anderson RBF Tulane
187 Walter Thurmond CB/S Oregon
211 Leigh Tiffin PK Alabama

Iupati is not what I want, but if the coaches believe in his raw skills and he shows coachability, BPA IMO at #20, I vote for a trade down as you know.

Wilson should start, Spievey should get playing time. Edds is depth for WILL and should push Diles in a year or two. Will push Adibi.

Starks and Anderson will play.

Thurmond should be able to play FS in our system.

Tiffin no explanation necessary.

187. CB Alterraun Verner 5'10" 185 4.52 UCLA

PK, tell me about Speivey, if you don't mind.

A few quotes first;

GazetteOnline interview with Mike Mayock (http://gazetteonline.com/blogs/docs-office/2010/02/23/nfl-network-analyst-bulaga-could-crack-the-top-5)
“As far as corners, Spievey, I like him a lot as a physical, press, cover-2-type corner. I’m anxious to see what he runs; he’s only a junior so we don’t have any height, weight, speed on him. He’s one of those Iowa corners that also could translate, a la Charles Godfrey, to free safety, which adds to his versatility."

Read this interview on Scout.com (http://sdg.scout.com/2/947130.html)

Ed Thompson: As you look back on your career at Iowa, what are you really proud of?

Amari Spievey: To start both years I was there after I got kicked out and came back, that was great. To be able to compete at a high level and help the defense win and to be a huge factor on the defense and lock down my side every game.

Thompson: You started out with a bump in the road, redshirting your freshman year and left to go to Iowa Central Community College. While you were there you got your academics on track and had a standout season for their football team. Talk about how that experience of being forced to leave Iowa benefited you in the long run.

Spievey: It re-humbled me. Getting kicked out and going there was a big wake-up call. It made me appreciate the opportunity and blessings I had at Iowa and made me fight even harder to reach my goal. I knew if I got a chance to come back it would be my last chance, and I wanted to make the best of it.

I not going to say I have watched a bunch of tape on this kid, but I like what I have seen. The kid is listed 5-11 190 and is expected to run a 4.5. I like the mental side in the interviews and he has man to man skill and can play in a zone. Something about him intrigues me.

I just rewatched the Senior Bowl, BTW it will be replayed tomorrow evening on the NFL network, and was thinking outside the box. Roy's likes to use the BPA no matter the position, and after rewatching the game what if we go DE in the 1st?

In the mock we are using Drafttek #18,

the 19th pick, which we will be flipping a coin for tomorrow morning, is Brandon Graham Michigan DE43.

Roy had him select BPA in one of his mocks and I questioned him, but now I think he might be right. Graham is unblockable and he plays the run as well as Mario. Imagine a front four of Mario, NT/Robinson/Okam/Cody, Okoye/Smith,
Graham. Those DEs would be unblockable. Now I would go with the biggest body DT that produced that I had so the other teams could not run up the gut.

Now what do I do with Barwin? How about a 3-4 on passing downs? Smith-Okoye-Williams in front of Barwin-Cushing-Ryans-Graham. Bring the chaos, flood the gaps BTW not a bad idea for a base defense if you upgrade the NT, IMO.

2nd round be back to the teams idea of BPA, I like a handful of guys at 50.

First, let me just say that I am behind the idea of a 3-man front on 3rd down. The question becomes how aggressive I am to put a 4th LB on the field or that extra DB on the back end. This is why I have no problem taking Weatherspoon in the first round.

Secondly, I didn't have Graham as my pick, it was Wooten from NorthWestern in the 2nd round at #50. Wooten is bigger and I could use him like Antonio Smith and use him as a pass-rushing DT when I brought in Barwin as a pass-rushing DE specialist. Graham and Barwin are essentially the same player-type in my estimation. Obviously, Graham is probably better against the run as he's more polished.

Now, will I have a problem taking Graham? Nope. I like pass-rushers, especially if there isn't any quality DBs available. Other than Haden, um, I don't see any "1st round" CBs in this draft. Ergo, select where the talent is. I just wouldn't go that route in the first round.

After I posted this i saw my mistake of Graham v Wooten. Even though the player was wrong, I will credit you with the position as a position not to overlook.

If you have a pass rush like Indy, the DBs do not need to elite. You can play base defense most of the game. When we took Mario that was the goal, but IMO we have played him out of position his whole career. He is the prototypical LE (guy that plays over the usually slower RT). The signing of Smith doomed Mario to playing out of position.

As for the CBs in this draft, I concur that only Haden appears to be a true first rounder.
I would not be opposed to cutting Smith if we drafted a stud RDE, or we sign Julius Peppers.

I view Julius Peppers in the same scene as I do LT, how much gas does he have in that 30 year old tank? I would be happier with someone in the draft to be coached up. We aren't going to win the big one this year, just get into the playoffs, right?

Using their draft I would go with:

20. Brian Price, DT, UCLA
51. Anthony Dixon, RB, Miss St
82. Donovan Warren, CB, Michigan
119. Dekoda Watson, OLB, Florida State
152. Linval Joseph, DT, E.C.U.
177. Robert Johnson, FS, Utah
187. Reggie Stephens, OG, Iowa St.
213. *Leigh Tiffin or best kicker available*

I think we all are going to be surprised when guys like Warren fly off the board in the 2nd, and Watson in the 3rd. The pro scouts have a whole different view on these guys then places like drafttek.

Saffold who drafttek has as a 2nd day guy, (the 4th round or high, old school) is looking more and more like a 2nd or early 3rd round guy.

As we get closer to the draft QBs and RBs tend to drop, this year I predict TEs dropping due to the depth at TE.

The CB position is always a position of need and there is a group of guys that ranked from the 2nd CB to about 10th that are pretty interchangeable. IMO we should try to grab two of those guys.

Warren could go anywhere between #50 - #94.

Drafttek has Saffold being drafted by the Steelers at #82 right in front of the Texans in the 3rd round.

The guys I see as being way underrated right now are OG John Jerry and RB Ben Tate and they are 4th round picks right now (#122 & #124).

I was conflicted about drafting Watson because we have Adibi on special teams waiting for the right opportunity and Marcus Freeman on the practice squad. But one thing I did notice last year was how OLB's fell in the draft.

While I agree with you that CB's is always a position of need and the 2nd and 10th are pretty interchangeable, this is a pretty deep class of CB's and we should find a serviceable one in the third. That definitely wasn't the case last year when the talent fell off rather quickly after the forth or fifth CB taken.

This draft also seems to be heavy on DE's, as well.

I don't have a problem with Watson, I think he is underrated. He had a very solid Senior Bowl, and has been on my list of players to follow most of the season. I think he would be a solid WILL in the NFL. IMO Adibi needs a wakeup call and Watson would be that.

BTW I am interested in seeing Freeman and what he can do.

Lastly solid take on the CBs.

I almost drafted Lonyae Miller in the 7th round, but since I had Ben Tate, it seemed like too crowded in the backfield. I also have the belief that we can't have too many good corners until Fred Bennett or Antaun Molden show me something. Stuckey isn't the "cover" FS that I covet, but I just like the way he plays. I'm moving Chaney to the WILL. Getting Dan Williams improves the defense on all 3 levels.

Trade down time
San Diego is looking for a RB and Jonathan Dwyer fits their system. We swap our #20 and 81 for their #28 and 60. This gives us 3 picks in the top 60 players.

Then in the 3rd you give a 2011 2nd round pick for #75

28 Dan Williams Tennessee DT43
51 Kyle Wilson Boise State CB
60 Ryan Mathews Fresno State RBF
75 Tyson Alualu California DT43
115 Darrell Stuckey Kansas SS
146 Zane Beadles Utah OG
177 John Skelton Fordham QB
187 Marshall Newhouse TCU OG
211 Lonyae Miller RBF Fresno State

My DBs are better because I have William and Alualu, and my run defense just got better. No way Mathews last until 60 in the real draft, but he was available here, and we paired him with his old team mate Millers in the 7th. Stuckey is solid against the run and showed surprising speed, not a bad pick in the 4th.

I heard one of the players saying on the radio, not sure which one could have been Jacoby Jones, they thought DT was what the defense needed. They thought an inside push helped all the DBs and the LBs also.

I would be 100% behind this draft.

So you must have agreed with the trade down and then trade back into the 3rd using next years 2nd rounder?

Also you and I think Wilson and Matthews are 1 st rounders, but DraftTek still has them both in the 2nd, so I took them there.

The revision also had the Texans drafting Earl Thomas #20, so not sure if he makes it to #28. Most likely, I would have drafted Kyle Wilson at #28 in the latest version. So, with that being said, I wouldn't trade back to #28 if Earl Thomas is sitting there. At least not that far down.

Would I trade up to the 3rd round this year for next year's 2nd, most likely. Especially, when I'm looking at 2nd round talent being available NOW.

OK, I'll play-

1. Ryan Mathews, RB (I honestly don't think he'll last until the 2nd)
2. Lamar Houston, DT (Probably the main reason Texas had the best run defense in the nation. Drafttek has him going in the 4th, which is absurd)
3. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, FS/CB (meet our new starting FS and KR, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWyHc-KGp6c somewhat unknown player with good skill set, benefited from a great combine)
4. Amari Spievey, CB (good value in the 4th)
5. Dennis Pitta, TE (with so much uncertainty at the position, Pitta brings sure hands and great route running)
6a. Marshall Newhouse, OL (adds depth to the offensive line)
6b. Freddie Barnes, WR (late round steal; had over 1700 yards last season)
7. Walter McFadden, CB (We finally say goodbye to Molden)

I don't know, Mathews may last because of the number of RBs in the draft that can produce. He may not last to #50 though, so I can see it if he's your "Only Guy" that you feel is head and shoulders above the rest.

Lamar is a 2nd or 3rd round guy, definitely not 4th round.

The small school, shoulder injured, hard to pronounce guy - is moving up my list. I haven't seen his medical records, but if his shoulder checks out, he'd be a nice consolation prize at FS.

Spievey is gaining momentum, probably a 3rd round guy at least.

I like Pitta the most out of all the TEs in the draft. The Colts will probably draft him.

Newhouse is like Lonyae Miller, much better than he is getting credit for in these mock drafts. That's why I keep drafting them this late. I'd love to make Newhouse our RG like Shawn Andrews did for the Eagles. That's just me though.

Freddie Barnes is going to be a good slot WR, probably better than David Anderson in 3 years. Just wonder if we take a WR in this draft. If so, Marcus Easely would be the guy I'd like from UConn.

Walter McFadden has skills, but is a project. Not bad for a 7th rounder.

I agree, IMO Mathews does not drop below 35.

I do question if Spievey drops to the 4th, I think he is a 3rd rounder, but with all the risers someone has to drop. Newhouse is starting to get some buzz, so we maybe out of luck there also.

McFaden is going jump up the boards after running a 4.40 at his proday. He measured in at 5-11 and 181, taller and heavier than thought. He is the guy missed by the combine invites that get drafted in the middle rounds.

Using Drafttek's 3/26:

What Smithiak will probably do-

20. Kyle Wilson, CB (knee jerk reaction after letting Dunta walk)

51. Nate Allen, FS (Smithiak have been studing Super Bowl film on how to defeat the Colts)

81. Toby Gerhart, RB (Gerhart gives our running game a pulse after McNair does some arm-twisting)

118. Arthur Jones, DT (Okoye feels the heat after the Texans find Jones at 118)

150. Myron Lewis, CB (Smithiak feels Lewis can start down the road)

187. Jeff Byers, OL (3 year starter at LG at USC)

197. Stevenson Sylvester, OLB (Diles' competition in the offseason)

227. Leigh Tiffin, K

My Cherry picks:

20. Earl Thomas, FS
51. Lamar Houston, DT
81. Ben Tate, RB
118. Jamar Chaney, OLB
150. Walter McFadden, CB

After Roy responded to my question about Petrus, I think I am wrong about his quickness. His times from the combine do not support the quickness he showed when he was a FB. So I am changing round 3 in this mock to Amari Spievey CB Iowa raw but has a nice updside. Very good special teamer, form solid coaching.

20 Earl Thomas Texas FS
51 Jon Asamoah OG Iowa
81 Amari Spievey CB Iowa
118 Ben Tate RBF Auburn
150 Myron Lewis, CB Vanderbilt
187 Lonyae Miller RBF Fresno State
197 Jay Ross DT East Carolina
227 Deji Karim Southern Illinois RB/KR (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej8pypXXA7k)

This changes the whole draft

Thomas will start early and Spievey will play ST and push for playing time, He is not a super fast guy, 4.51.

I also realized a mistake Warren was picked before I grabbed him, so he was replaced by Jay Ross, a solid DT from East Carolina.

I still have RBs A, B and C in this mock. Depth and more Depth. Tate and Miller are solid, Karim is a fire plug and can return kicks

The OL changes Brown Smith Caldwell Asamoah Winston

#20 S Earl Thomas 5'10" 195 4.44 Texas

#197 LB Simoni Lawrence 6'1" 232 4.59 Minnesota
#227 DT Jay Ross 6'3" 317 5.15 East Carolina

Earl Thomas covers up a lot of mistakes in the Secondary. Ben Tate is my favorite All-Around RB. Geno Atkins can get in the backfield and blow up plays. Marshall has the combination between Size/Athleticism as well as being a relative "bargain" in the 4th round. Jefferson & Thomas have size and athleticism - but they will need some coaching. Lawrence is my prototypical WILL and since I didn't draft 'Spoon, I'll take a flyer here late. Ross is a big body to take on double teams, but he has some moves to get in the QB's face. I'm pretty happy with this draft.

Would Atkins play along side Okoye or instead of him?

They would rotate, keeping both of them fresh. Atkins has better penetration than Okoye in my opinion. Perhaps we could get some looks at a 3-4 defense where Okoye-Atkins-Williams have hands in the dirt with 4 "LBs" Barwin - Ryans - Lawrence - Cushing (Lawrence played some SS so it's almost like being in Nickle). Then the Secondary would look like Reeves - Thomas - Jefferson - Quinn. At least that is one combination of several I'd like to be able to throw out on the field during passing situations.

That is interesting. The league is obviously tilting toward 3-4 anyway and IMO the Texans are in a position to also move to a 3-4 if they had a nose tackle. I was watching NFL.com and they were talking about nose tackles, even Cam Thomas and Torrell Troupe flying up the draft. They even put Mount Cody at the bottom of the 1st, perhaps.

We don't really have a NT (maybe DRob-2). Atkins or Ross could be one, I suppose. Does it take special skills to be a NT rather than a DT? I wonder if Kubiak/Bush would entertain that notion? I guess that would change our draft strategy somewhat, maybe an additional LB.

If all it took was bulk then there would be more of them. Wilfork the guy most people point at as a successful draft pick, did not start his rookie year, so it took him a season to learn the pro game. A NT has to learn to feel the double team and hold his ground. They need to stay low, and use their hands extremely well.

Quickness alone will not work, bulk alone does not work. Quickness with low end power seems to be the trick.

Yeah, PK I remember Curly Culp with the Oilers in the days when they ran a 3-4. Forgot just how big he was sizewise but he was a college wrestler IIRC. That gave him an edge in the use of hands and leverage. Made a great NT.

Maybe Lamar Houston would make an acceptable NT. He started Texas as a RB so he has quickness and should have leg drive, but he isn't big by today's standards.

Curley Culp
Position: DT-NT-G
Height: 6-2 Weight: 265 lbs.

But the OL back then only weighed 240's, so when Earl was 245 that was huge for a RB.

But your correct in the fact that wrestlers and martial arts guys make the best front 7 guys.

It's not easy finding a NT like Vince Wilfork or Haloti Ngata. The combo of size, speed, power, leverage, and strength is highly coveted. There isn't one in every draft. I believe the closest physical specimen in this draft is Linval Joseph. He isn't going to be drafted in the first round like the two prototypes because of several reasons. However, there are some strengths and similarities.

Pos---Name---Height-Weight---40------Reps-----Vert------20----10----Jump-----3-Cone--Shuttle
DT-Linval Joseph-6'6"-328lbs--5.09------39------30------2.91---1.75----8.25------8.12------4.71
wilfork/ngata----6'3"- 340lbs-5.08/5.13-36/37-26.5/31.5- /2.96- /1.73-8.42/9.2---7.6/7.97---4.5/4.69

Now, I won't tell you that Linval is the next great NT just because of his measurables. I will say, that for a 4th round pick, I'm ready to take the risk that he develops into a solid starter who can stuff the run.

4. Torrell Troup DT

I would probably like Geno Atkins or Lamar Houston in the 3rd, but would be left with a risky pick for RB after the 3rd.

I have the same problem, which is why I don't have a problem drafting a RB in the 2nd round. I'm starting to be thankful that we signed an OL in FA this offseason. Trying to get all the 'presents' I want on Christmas, I mean Draft day is going to be hard with the number of picks that we have in the first 4 rounds.

1. FS Earl Thomas

2. CB Brandon Ghee, OG Jon Asamoah, RB Ben Tate

3. RB Ben Tate, DT Geno Atkins, DT Lamarr Houston, RB Toby Gerhart

4. DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, CB Alterraun Verner, CB AJ Jefferson, RB James Starks

5. CB AJ Jefferson, LB Pat Angerer, CB Kevin Thomas, OC Eric Olsen

6. CB Kevin Thomas, LB Simoni Lawrence, OC Joe Hawley

I got a run-stuffer in the 4th round. A little upset I couldn't get Geno Atkins, but that's why I keep wanting to trade down. Then again, I was able to get Earl Thomas without trading up, so that's good. I still would like to trade down in the 2nd round, though.

I can't pass on Trent Williams unless Eric Berry is still on the board. I don't see him lasting that long, but if the draft gods smile upon us, I'm taking Trent. In the 2nd round I was tempted to take Jon Asamoah, but since Trent Williams was on the roster, I decided to address the Secondary. I believe if we don't draft a RB by the 3rd round, we won't get anyone worth a damn better than any old RB we could sign as an UDFA (Arian Foster). The 4th round is some beef in the middle to help out Cody. The 5th round is a steal that has injury concerns causing him to slip. The 6th round pick may allow Antonio Smith to play some more 3-Tech and Special Teams help. I must be higher on Crezdon Butler than anyone else, but I think he could be our Nickleback.

7. CB Crezdon Butler 6'0" 191 4.54 Clemson

I must be higher on Crezdon Butler than anyone else, but I think he could be our Nickleback.

If Crezdon is still there in the 7th, we'd be fools not to take a flyer on him, especially considering our DB situation.

I saw you mention earlier Stephen Williams out of Toledo, he'd be a great story considering he's a local product. I really like him and have included him on some of my earlier mocks.

Here's what I came up with, in an absent Earl Thomas draft:

1. Brian Price DT
2. Chris Cook CB
3. Jonathan Dwyer or Anthony Dixon RB
4. Jamar Chaney OLB
5. Myron Lewis FS
6a. Jay Ross NT
6b. Lindsey Witten DE
7. Vlad Richard OG

UFA. Joshua Moore CB

Assuming Earl Thomas was taken by the 49ers, I select the next highest player on my board, Brian Price. He'll put plenty of interior pressure on the Colt's, Titan's and Jag's O-line. In round 2, I select Cook who I feel can start opposite from Quin and not be a liability in coverage. His size and athleticism should provide a boost to our secondary. I take the best RB available in the 3rd round. Next I look to bolster LB position off the edge, we're always susceptible to that with Chris Johnson in our division. Chaney is hands down the best OLB available. In the 5th we get lucky and find M. Lewis still on the board and the Texans go to the podium within 10 seconds. He will compete for the starting job at FS. The 6th round is focused on getting better, stronger and faster up front. The D-line has been put on notice. The 7th adds another piece to the offensive line, which has already been addressed through FA.
Moore has a chance to stick if Molden can't stay healthy this fall. He'd be great in nickle packages. I really like this kid.

Well done, Blitzwood. Obviously, I don't share the same opinion on some of your players, but I like your thought process. Getting some speed at the WILL is important to me in order to chase MJD and CJ2K. I've thought about adding Josh Moore at the end of my own draftboard.

"Goes downhill with a burst through the line when inside holes are available
Good vertical to jump over piles at the goal line. Able to make one cut to head upfield, although he could improve his vision to find the hole. Carries the ball in outside hand. Keeps his legs moving and leans his body forward through contact to get extra yardage or break free for a big gain. Usually falls forward. "

This is the exact situation I see being very difficult for the Texans if they draft a RB in first. RBs have shorter careers so one would want to beef up line too to make full use of a first round RB. The Texans secondary is scary. And not in a good way. At least with Dunta, you knew it was possible to win games with him getting burnt as often as he does.

Tate was selected at the top of the round, so I didn't 'reach' for him since I couldn't get him with our next pick. Linval Joseph was snatched right before my pick.

OK, now that I'm looking back at what happened I can now Cherry-Pick what could have been a better situation. Obviously, trading down and getting more picks would have been optimum. Mainly because the talent board didn't match our 'needs' at all. It really did not matter if I had drafted Spiller or Weatherspoon (the two highest players on my draft board) - I would have still been thinking the same way for subsequent picks. As I have said in the past, the OL could be beefed up even with having signed a Free Agent from KC.

20. RB C.J. Spiller
51. OG John Jerry
81. RB Ben Tate
118. CB Alterraun Verner
150. DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim
187. CB Walter McFadden
197. DT Earl Mitchell
227. LB Simoni Lawrence

The other option is that I could simply draft Ben Tate at #20 (I like him more than Ryan Mathews anyway and I've seen that as an acceptable idea)
Then I could still get Jerry in the 2nd round and at #81 I could go after FS Major Wright.

If I wanted to get Geno Atkins as my pass-rushing DT I couldn't wait until the 3rd round like I wanted, so I'd need to spend my 2nd rounder on him. UGH!

Perhaps if I had two 5th round picks I could get DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim AND FS Robert Johnson.

Roy P

OK, I'm just going to readjust my thinking. Instead of focusing on Tate, I'm going to set my sights on Toby Gerhart as the workhorse RB to go into the mix with Foster and Slaton. I might just have to go for NEED in the first round. I ran a mock and came up with this for my collection....

1. LB Sean Weatherspoon 6'1" 245 4.68 Missouri
2. OG John Jerry 6'6" 332 5.15 Mississippi
3. RB Toby Gerhart 6'1" 235 4.53 Stanford
4. DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim 6'4" 263 4.73 Washington
5. DT Mike Neal 6'3" 294 4.89 Purdue
6a. FS Robert Johnson 6'2" 200 4.52 Utah
6b. LB AJ Edds 6'4" 246 4.71 Iowa
7. CB Crezdon Butler 6'0" 191 4.54 Clemson

Now, I understand that We don't need Weatherspoon, so I could have just gone with CB Kyle Wilson at #20 in this mock. There may be some who argue there's no NEED to get an OL in the 2nd round. Options included FS Morgan Burnett, DT Lamarr Houston, DT Linval Joseph, CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, or the RB's Tate/Hardesty. If I took a DT in the 2nd round, then in the 5th round I could have drafted an OL Shawn Lauvao.

What guys are there when you picked in the 4th? I am not looking at a DE at all much less that early.

If you went with Wilson or McCourty in the 1st your draft would cover a lot of the needs, plus there is not the need to go Weatherspoon and Edds, they have the same skill set.

I sure like the idea of Weatherspoon in round 1. Pair that with signing Haynesworth and we would immediately have an elite front 7. Super Bowl caliber defense, IMO. Gerhart would probably enjoy running behind Jerry also. That ought to add a ton of red zone offense.

Well, I just heard on Path to the Draft that the Redskins will probably hold on to Fat Albert after all and just play him all across the line. Therefore, he may be a moot point.

CB Kevin Thomas
CB Walter McFadden
CB Alterraun Verner
NFLDraftScout.com now has Geno Atkins ranked #118, so I'd probably take him. They updated their list this morning. I am not 'looking' for a DE per se, but Te'o-Nesheim is just BPA in my estimation at a position of impact. Can a team play the Colts twice a year and really have too many pass-rushers?

I picked up Edds to remind me that I could get him later and by simply changing my 1st round pick, I could have a decent draft (in terms of filling needs).

If you trade for Fat Albert you are most likely giving up a 1st to 3rd round pick, so one of those guys is gone. I do not see the Redskins taking a future pick based on playing time, but if we could trade a 2011 conditional pick for him....

6a. FS Robert Johnson 6'2" 200 4.52 Utah
6b. LB AJ Edds 6'4" 246 4.71 Iowa
7. CB Crezdon Butler 6'0" 191 4.54 Clemson

Now, I understand that We don't need Weatherspoon, so I could have just gone with CB Kyle Wilson at #20 in this mock. .

1. CB Kyle Wilson Boise St.
2. OG John Jerry Mississippi
3. RB Toby Gerhart Stanford
4. DT Geno Atkins Georgia
5. DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim Washington
6a. FS Robert Johnson Utah
6b. LB AJ Edds Iowa
7. CB Crezdon Butler Clemson

This may be the best I could do and that's IF these guys are available when we pick. Kyle Wilson 'replaces' the perceived "Shut Down" CB that we lost in Dunta Robinson. John Jerry is fast enough to be considered a ZBS and yet large enough to make a hole to run through. Toby Gerhart may be the steal of the draft because he's White (that's a strange thought). Geno Atkins may get more sacks and TFLs than Okoye. Te'o-Nesheim is another body to bring in and perhaps a better version of Antonio Smith as he gets older. Robert Johnson isn't exactly Eric Berry or Earl Thomas, but he is a ballhawk and we don't spend a 1st rounder to get him. Edds isn't fast, but he's intelligent and may lead the team in INTERCEPTIONS as a rookie LB. With Quinn and Wilson on the outside, I'd let Butler play the Nickle.

Some of the picks the simulator and I agree on. Interestingly, my pick at #20 was the computer's pick at #51. ;)

A CB to replace Dunta followed by two complementary runningbacks. A huge body in the middle and another pass-rusher. A ball-hawk Free Safety that has the hands to make interceptions. An athletic OL from Colorado. Another CB and Special Teams contributor. Yeah, I could be o.k. with this if I couldn't trade and get more picks.
