Yeah, while I'm at it I thought I'd put together my list of Free Agents by priority. Guys at the top of the list would make more money or at least I would offer them more money. I get DeMeco locked up first before going out on the market. When it comes to O.D. I compare him to Ben Watson and Tony Scheffler and try to find the best bargain.

1 DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans (26)
2 Richard Seymour, Oakland Raiders (30)
3 Derrick Johnson, Kansas City Chiefs (27)
4 Nick Collins, Green Bay Packers (27)
5 Antoine Bethea, Indianapolis Colts (26)
6 Logan Mankins, New England Patriots (28)
7 Barry Cofield, New York Giants (26)
8 Cadillac Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (28)
9 Ben Watson, New England Patriots (29)
10 Daryn Colledge, Green Bay Packers (28)
11 Mark Clayton, Baltimore Ravens (28)
12 Owen Daniels, Houston Texans (27)
13 Tony Scheffler, Denver Broncos (27)
14 David Baas, San Francisco 49ers (28)
15 Mark Anderson, Chicago Bears (27)
16 Richard Marshall, Carolina Panthers (25)
17 Carlos Rogers, Washington Redskins (29)
18 Chester Pitts, Houston Texans (31)
19 Darryl Tapp, Seattle Seahawks (25)
20 Jerious Norwood, Atlanta Falcons (27)
21 Jerome Harrison, Cleveland Browns (27)
22 Jason Avant, Philadelphia Eagles (27)

With no agreement you can take off all the players with less than 7 years experience like Tony Scheffler. Our very own OD and Rynas will be RFA's as well.

I'm seeing lots of love for Seymour as a FA. He's a good player, I guess I'm just not understanding where he'd play. He's essentially a better Antonio Smith. So, we could bump one of those guys down to 3-tech, but then what do we do with Okoye? I'd have no problem cutting him, myself. But, we know that's not a realistic possibility.

I just don't see a fit there.

I'm going over a couple of scenarios very EARLY. It's always fun to see who I mock select in the 6th round getting picked on draft day in the 2nd. Here's two such mocks...

1. WLB Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri
2. RB Ryan Mathews, Fresno State
3. FS Myron Lewis, Vanderbilt
4. CB Syd'Quan Thompson, California
5a. OG Thomas Austin, Clemson
5b. CB Alterraun Verner, UCLA
6. DT Nate Collins, Virginia
7. DT Kade Weston, Georgia

1. FS Earl Thomas**, Texas
2. RB Ryan Mathews, Fresno State
3. CB Syd'Quan Thompson, California
4. CB Alterraun Verner, UCLA
5a. OG Thomas Austin, Clemson
5b. OG Jon Asamoah, Illinois
6. DT Nate Collins, Virginia
7. DT Torrell Troup, Central Florida

Has Earl Thomas declared?

With LBs that can tackle and a SS like Pollard, Earl Thomas would be a good fit here since there would be plenty of back 7 help covering up his slight deficiencies in the run game. And I'd love to have a FS with ball skills (note this is assuming we bring back Pollard).

If Thomas declares, and he's there at our pick, that's the guy I want.

Roy, I can't see us taking a LB in the first, we've got much bigger needs that need to be filled.

It would be very tough to go LB in the first due to the fact that Cushing stays on the field on 3rd down and does a great job of it. That means if you draft a great WLB you are removing Ryans or Cushing on 3rd down (the WLB's biggest down) and because of that it is a limited impact.

I would hope secondary, but I would be ok with OL, RB, WR, or DL in that order also.

OK if we take Weatherspoon that would be 3 guys that can all stay on the field. The team can rotate the coverages, and blitzes. All three guys can play all three positions, not a bad thing, what if Ryans went down? With Weatherspoon and Cushing, you are OK in coverage.

I want to have a super group, either at LB or on the DL. I don't care where.

Weatherspoon would be a solid pick so long as he can cover the likes of Reggie Wayne on a deep post or fly-pattern, otherwise if he can't impersonate a CB lets make that position top-priority in the first round if we go D. But for a player that would be off the field in nickel packages, Cody or another big run-stopping DT seems to make more sense ?

FYI - In Rob Rang's most recent mock, he has us taking RB Jahvid Best. Another mock on CBS has us taking CB Patrick Robinson of Florida St.

I guess Best would be drafted on the "Best Available" theory. ;)

Old School baby. Thank old Steelers Russel, Lambert and Hamm.

Any one of the LBs can cover a TE or a RB.

Three WRs? You pull one of the LBs, but which one?

barrett
01-08-2010, 04:56 PM
That's my point. 3rd down is a 3 WR down in the NFL. Actually, for some teams 1st and 2nd down are 3 WR downs. It's a passing league.

That is why I didn't like taking Cushing at first. Because in the NFL only two of your LBs play more than half the snaps and I wrongly assumed that as a SLB, Cushing would be the type to come out in those situations. Obviously he is not.

So, with what we have at LB already, drafting Witherspoon would mean that either our first round pick, or one of our two pro bowl LBs would be playing less than half the snaps. Its' just not going to happen.

If we go LB at all I would suspect it is a late rounder to back up Demeco. Do you guys have eyes on anyone who fits that billing (6th or 7th round plugger who is long on instincts but likely appears short on athleticism).

First, we don't have to take a LB off the field in Nickle packages. In fact, most of the time when we saw a passing situation, one of the D-Lineman would come off the field and we'd rush only 3. So, a 3-3-5 look isn't out of the question.

Secondly, just because you draft a player in the first round doesn't mean you will get a 1st round talent. If we had this team and were going into the 2004 draft, I'd rather select D.J. Williams than to select Ahmad Carroll. I'm also considering the possibility of getting a player like Nathan Vasher later in the draft to meet my need at the CB position.

Lastly, if you are merely looking for a player to be DeMeco's backup in the 6th round, might I suggest

Yes. I'll also have the offense guess which one is coming on the blitz too.

Roy and I agree on this one. Cushing was the best coverage LB in the NFL, stats bear that out, and Weatherspoon is considered a top cover guy. Funny thing is both of these guys can also rush the passer. Now, let the QB guess which guy is hot and which guy is laying back.

barrett
01-09-2010, 01:01 AM
It doesn't matter if they are top cover LBs. They still can't cover like a slot receiver, which is what one of them would have to do to make it plausible to have all 3 on the field in passing downs.

Look around the NFL and you'll see that no 4-3 team is playing 3 LBs on 3rd down. Most aren't even playing two. And it's not because nobody has come up with the inovation yet, it's because the forward pass was invented and it stopped being useful to have 3 LBs on the field at once on passing downs. Especially since a 3-3-5 is going to slide Mario in and make it tougher for him to rush the passer. A 3-3-5 on 3rd down also makes Connor Barwin useless. And I doubt the GM is looking to draft players that make his 2nd round pick from last year irrelevant.

Honestly there are too many logical reasons to list for why we won't go LB in round 1 in a million years.

But I don't need to argue this one. You guys can draft as many LBs as you want for your offseason defense. I don't have to agree with your X's and O's to appreciate the great work you do researching draft prospects.

So I'll just focus on your guys at OL, DT, FS, CB, RB, WR.

Focusing on DT position, I'd consider not only "upgrading" Shaun Cody at the NT position, but I'm also wanting to replace Jeff Zgonina. Deljuan Robinson and Frank Okam could use some competition, in my opinion. Therefore, I would not be hesitant to draft 2 DTs in this draft. Preferrably, a NT and a 3-Tech (one of each). I'm not in a hurry to spend a TOP pick on this "need" as we have seen, just b/c we used a first round pick on a DT (T.J. & A.O.), there's not guarantee that the produce immediately. So, the guys I'm targeting....

NT:
Jay Ross, East Carolina
Height: 6-3. Weight: 314.
Projected 40 Time: 5.14.
Projected Round (2009): 3-4.
11/28/09: Has 35 tackles, three TFL, 1.5 sacks and a 49-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Jay Ross didn't look too bad running that one back on national TV.
2/14/09: Once again an All-Conference USA honorable mention, Jay Ross accumulated 48 tackles, 9.5 TFL and 4.5 sacks.

Ekom Udofia, Stanford
Height: 6-2. Weight: 315.
Projected 40 Time: 5.12.
Projected Round (2009): 4-5.
11/28/09: Hobbled by an ankle injury this year, Ekom Udofia has 34 tackles and 1.5 TFL in 11 games. Should be a solid reserve nose tackle in the NFL.

Cam Thomas, North Carolina
Height: 6-3. Weight: 328.
Projected 40 Time: 5.18
Projected Round (2009): 5-6
12/31/08: Finished season with 34 tackles, 3.5 TFL, and one sack in 13 games.

Torrell Troup, Central Florida
Height: 6-3. Weight: 314.
Projected 40 Time: 5.34.
Projected Round (2010): 6-7.
11/28/09: Has 27 tackles, five TFL and two sacks in 11 games. Some 3-4 team needing nose tackle depth will take him late.

Kade Weston, Georgia
Height: 6-5. Weight: 322.
Projected 40 Time: 5.05.
Projected Round (2010): 6-7.
11/28/09: Solid numbers for a nose tackle: 25 tackles, six TFL and two sacks in 11 games.

3-Tech:
Lamarr Houston, Texas
Height: 6-2. Weight: 300.
Projected 40 Time: 5.02.
Projected Round (2010): 3-4.
11/28/09: Having a monster year for the Longhorns with 37 tackles, 13.5 TFL and five sacks in 11 games.

Corey Peters, Kentucky
Height: 6-3. Weight: 295.
Projected 40 Time: 4.97.
Projected Round (2010): 4-5.
11/28/09: Having a monstrous senior campaign for the Wildcats with 49 tackles, 11 TFL and four sacks.

Nate Collins, Virginia
Height: 6-2. Weight: 290.
Projected 40 Time: 5.10.
Projected Round (2010): 5-6.
11/28/09: Has a whopping 70 tackles, 9.5 TFL and five sacks in 11 games as a senior.

Mick Williams, Pittsburgh
Height: 6-1. Weight: 280.
Projected 40 Time: 4.89.
Projected Round (2010): 5-6.
11/28/09: A 4-3 under tackle who can really get after the quarterback, Mick Williams has 13 TFL and four sacks in nine games this season.

Charles Brown looks like a top 10 pick to me. Could possibly be the best tackle in the draft... maybe a notch behind Okung

Fordham?? You want a quarterback from Fordham? Do they still run the single wing there? I think the last football star from Fordham was Vince Lombardi.

Roy, maybe you have answered this. I know several others have expressed this opinion. You have two OT's at the top of your list. I think everyone knows Duane Brown could make an excellant pulling guard. Do you not think he will eventually be an elite LT?

To tell you the truth, I don't care. The two guys I have at the top of my list would make pretty good LGs if Chester Pitts can't come back from injury or is simply let go as a Free Agent. Maybe this season Brown stays at LT b/c of Experience and a rookie like Bulaga would play LG. Then next season, they could possibly flip positions if that's what the coaches thought would be best.
Conversely, if the Rookie came in and played LT and moved Brown - I'd be fine with that if the overall line play was better.

I thought he reminded me of Flacco, same size ease of motion and the ball zips up the seems. Now he is raw and need to work on his footwork and accuracy.

I won't argue too much with you PK, but I actually liked Schaub coming out of UVa more than Flacco. I thought Flacco would need more footwork drills since he was always in the Shotgun at UDel. Anyway, my point is we don't "need" a QB, but if we draft this kid from Fordham, I'd be o.k. with that.

My comparison to Flacco had more to do with the arm strength, I have never put Schaub in the high end of arm strength. Schaub is solid, and not weak armed, but he is also not a rocket arm. Flacco has a rocket arm.

Skelton has natural tools that need refinement.

Also I don't remember Schaub in college anymore, wasn't as big a college watcher then.

I want to get a gander at FS Earl Thomas tomorrow at the combine. I just may become a convert. He is supposed to have superb instincts for the position.

Just FYI, Mayock moved him ahead of Eric Berry in his top 5. Don't know why, just glimpsed the crawl while watching the combine.

Since Spoon ran a 4.68 today, I may have to slide Thomas ahead of him on the draft board. I'm expecting Earl to run a 4.45 or better. That would compel me to move him up by de-facto. Not to mention, we really need a FS and Chris Cook put up 7 reps on the Bench while Myron Lewis put up 10. I'm thinking that the only "sleeper" CB/FS hybrid is going to be Brian Jackson from Oklahoma. Therefore, if Thomas is there at #20, I might just have to go that route. Of course, now that I'm jumping on that bandwagon, he'll be gone by then. We'll have to wait and see what he does at the Combine tomorrow.

FWIW he's also got McCoy ahead of Suh on the basis of the Oklahoma tackle being more disruptive, more of a pure 3-Tech talent than Suh.

Today they had a dissertation on how the NFL is a passing league and that defenders are now being graded on how well they defend against the pass. McCoy has more "wiggle" to slip past Guards to get pressure on the QB. Getting sacks is how DTs can make plays in the passing game. DBs make plays by getting Interceptions, so Thomas is the better "Ball Hawk" in Mayock's eyes. Eric Berry goes for "hits" to break up passes, so that's his explanation for why he has guys ranked higher.

This is my quick knee-jerk reaction to what I saw at the Combine. While I'm not "in love" with Taylor Mays, he's at least now on my draft board. While Spoon let me down with his 40, he more than made up for it with 34 Reps and a 40" Vertical. The only reason I don't have him above Earl Thomas is simply because of team Needs and that may change after Free Agency. Anyway, this is the hot off the presses draft board after watching the DBs at the Combine.

I wish Amobi Okoye would either become a blooming starter or the F.O. would give up on him so we could draft a new tackle of that ilk. Some of the good tackles available aren't useful because they duplicate him, and yet nobody seems wholly satisfied with his performance.

After watching the Senior Bowl again, I have moved up Bulldogs Geno Atkins and Jamar Chaney. Atkins is a mid-round pick who could push Okoye. Chaney was a MLB who I wrote off as being a duplicate for Ryans. However, he is more athletic than I thought. I also didn't have Eric Berry on the board, since I thought it was a moot point. However, if he's on the board after the first 10 picks, I may have to get on the phone and see what I need to do in order to move up.

Either I have some of my guys overrated, or there are certain players being disrespected. I keep selecting some of the same guys over and over again, so that probably means, that mocks are simply not rating them high enough. This would be the draft that I'd be expecting to be able to come away with and I'd be willing to trade up into the 3rd by using next year's 2nd....

I'm wondering if we could get a player like Weatherspoon and have the defense play a 3-3-5 on passing downs. Instead of removing the SAM, we replace the SS. I'd love to get Geno Atkins.

Roy:

I would like you to look into a guy named Joe Webb of UAB. He was a QB for them but is coming out as a WR. He did not get an invite to combine, but his pro-day measurables put him at the very top of the receiver's list. He is +-6'3" 225, ran 4.5 40yd, 21 reps @225, 42.5" vert., 11.5' Broad, 4.04 shuttle, 6.71 3-cone. He is 5-6th round but rising fast.

I say this because who is say how much longer we can hold on to AJ if he really wants a ring and AD is getting long of tooth for never having been a starter. Joe is going to take a couple of years to make the switch otherwise he is probably a 1st. Just asking your opinion because Mayock mentioned him as a sleeper a couple of days ago and I have seen some mocks with us taking a WR around #4 which is ultimately where he will probably go IMO.

I saw Webb at the Senior Bowl practices and he didn't jump out at me. Corey Chavous was talking him up, but I just didn't see it. Also, I'm not really itching to get another WR after signing Kevin Walter. HOWEVER, if I were wanting to get a WR to develop and maybe put on the practice squad or just be a Special Teamer, then these are the players I'd look at....

Blair White Mich St. 6'2" 209lbs 4.49, 18 reps, 33.5" vert, 9.5' Broad, 4.03 shuttle, 6.69 3-Cone. He has good hands and runs routes better than Webb.

David Gettis Baylor 6'3" 217lbs 4.43, 15 reps, 34.5" vert, 10.3' Broad, 4.41 shuttle, 6.94 3-Cone.

Marcus Easely UConn 6'3" 210lbs 4.39, 16 reps, 34" vert, 10.2' Broad, 4.61 shuttle, 6.94 3-Cone

Scott Long UofL 6'2" 216lbs 4.46, 20 reps, 41.5" vert, 10.2' Broad, 4.09 shuttle, 6.45 3-Cone. He could possibly be signed as an undrafted Free Agent after the draft is over.

Now, I can understand falling in love with measurables and it's not like we are going to spend a 1st round pick on him like Jacksonville did on a QB turn WR. Just looking at previous conversions: 49er's Michael Robinson and the Jets' Brad Smith have been less than stellar. So, we could get a WR on the 3rd day of the draft and maybe one of these guys will be the one.

I would add Eric Decker Minnesota WR 6-3 217 projects as btween 4.47 and 4.54. He had his lis franc ligament repaired and is out 6-8 months from the surgery which happen in late October. I is not going to be able to run before the draft. Brandon Marshall and Ted Ginn Jr both had the same surgery and have recovered well.

On the whole, if I were going to draft a project WR in the 4-5th round I believe I would try for a high measurable athlete to convert to WR rather than a career wide receiver that couldn't make it past the 4-5th round. You really don't know what you are getting with either but QB's have a habit of being among the best athletes on the field since they were in middle school. It is always a crap shoot around the 5th round anyway so I would go with the potential high-reward guy. 6'3" height combine with 42.5" vertical would give him the advantage over most every DB. Just my 2 cents.

If you are just looking for the athlete, to have an advantage over a DB, I'll take Long as an UDFA. He has experience catching the ball and if we are just looking for a project, why "waste" a draft pick on that? There are plenty of projects to be found after the draft. This team could draft a starter in the 4th round and it's 5th round picks could get significant playing time as a rotational player on the DLine or a player who could challenge Diles at WLB.

This team has enough holes that it doesn't have the luxury of drafting projects. We should be seeking solid contributors with every pick.

I can easily agree with that statement. I just can't imagine this team having much luck without AJ and it would be nice to have someone waiting in line and I don't think we really do right now.

We are going to have trouble ever becoming a championship team if we don't develop players before the need actually arises. There is pretty good evidence already that Dre isn't all that happy and wants to play for a team that has a chance at a ring. I can't blame him really.

I look at the NE Patriots. They can lose important players and have someone waiting in the wings to come forward. Welker goes down and Edelman fills in well. Their QB hits the dirt and Cassel (sp?) comes to the rescue. They have been able to acquire first round choices by trading off good players and having just as good players waiting to take their place. Having a 1.A and 1.B WR on the team is required as far as I am concerned until he is used or traded. AD might still be tradable or keep him another year.

As usual, you trumped me. Yes, he looks very good, length, speed, and athleticism. Not sure about his routes, but his hands look decent. NFL Draft Scout lists him at number 40 out of 400+ receivers. Project him into the 7th round or UFA. I doubt he would ever be a #1 receiver but you never know. Plaxico Burress is about that size and he did pretty well until his head exploded.

Just found some video of a few of my favorite players in this draft. Linval Joseph is a Big Body that can rotate with S. Cody at the NT.

Ben Tate is my favorite RB, but I wonder if he's still there in the 3rd round. I may just have to take him at #50.

Alterraun Verner and Crezdon Butler as CB on the 3rd day

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhQucP7DjYE
DANIEL TE'O-NESHEIM

I almost forgot my FS Robert Johnson...

I'll admit I'm a bit late to the party, but Tate really jumps off the page for me. Explosive, powerful runner with speed. The combo of speed/strength stats make Tate look like a buy in the 2nd round for me.

I'll also add that I like Montario Hardesty in this area as well. Concerned about his injury history a little, but he seemed to put it together last year. Regardless, having these two available in the 2nd round ought to make it easier to not force a pick in the first I hope.

I like McCourty & Tate more than I like Mathews & Ghee. Just sayin'....

Ok, maybe I'll rethink that line of thinking.....If there were just a CB in the first round that I could really get behind and say, "that's the guy we need!" I'm just afraid we are going to draft the next Carlos Rogers or Aaron Ross instead of the next 5-Time Pro-Bowler.

Roy P

There are two players that I'd like to compare before the draft....I'll call them M and T.

M - 55 Tackles, 18.5 Tackles For Loss, 12.5 Sacks.
T - 65 Tackles, 14 Tackles For Loss, 11 Sacks.

M - 6' 3", 266lbs, 4.77 - 40 yard dash, 1.60 - 10 yard split
T - 6' 3.5", 267lbs, 4.72 - 40 yard dash, 1.61 - 10 yard split

M - His career totals include 29.5 tackles-for-loss, 19.5 sacks, six fumbles recovered and five pass break-ups.
T - 194 tackles, 47 tackles for loss and as the school's all-time leader with 30 career sacks.

Derrick Morgan is considered to be a top 10 pick.
Daniel Te'o-Nesheim is considered to be a 4th or 5th round pick.

I'm just trying to understand the value here. I will be following these two players for the next 3 years to see which one produces more 'bang for the buck' at the next level. I find it interesting that USC players get graded "evenly" while the other Pac-10 schools get downgraded when compared to East Coast counterparts. Gerhart is getting some bias against him and he played AGAINST USC defenses and broke tackles against Clay Mathews and Brian Cushing. There is the C.J. Spiller vs. Jahvid Best arguments too so, I'm hopeful that it's East vs. West bias and not racism. Maybe I should put Jahvid on my draftboard, since I've added Spiller here recently.

Because Best has a history of concussions, I'd put him after Mathews and above Patrick Robinson.

A few guys who might be there on OL are-not sure if any could switch to OG?
Campbell, Bruce OT 6'6" 314 Maryland, might be a value pick
Capers, Selvish OT 6'4" 308 West Virginia athletic
Ulatoski, Adam OT 6'5" 300 Texas needs to develop
Washington, Tony OT 6'6" 311 Abilene Christian good size, long arms
Scott, Chris OT 6'4" 319 Tennessee road grader in SEC
Calloway, Kyle OT 6'6" 323 Iowa perhaps ok at right guard

and a few DB's to consider - lot of good athletes, may take a year to dev
Franks, Dominique CB 5'11" 194 Oklahoma athletic, possible safety
Owusu-Ansah, Akwasi CB 6'0" 207 Indiana (PA) fast, possible safety
Warren, Donovan CB 5'11" 193 Michigan versatile, possible safety
Cox, Perrish CB 5'11" 195 Oklahoma State ball skills
Jones, Reshad SS 6'1" 214 Georgia big, tackler
Asante, Larry SS 6'0" 212 Nebraska aggressive tackler
Chancellor, Kam FS 6'3" 231 Virginia Tech size, strength, productive

28 CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah 6'0" 207 4.47 IUP
48 FS Robert Johnson 6'2" 200 4.52 Utah

One of those two is who I expect us to take for the FS spot. And if you are judging how the Texans have been picking they will go with Johnson at some point. They have been going with players from winning programs (Jackson) or from big time conferences (Tate & Mitchell).
