Okay, so I am excited to see the 2009 Texans on the field, even if it is just the first game of the preseason, on the road no less.
Game is scheduled for Sat 8/15 at 7pm CT, broadcast locally on KTRK Ch 13. The game is scheduled to be re-broadcast on ch 13 at 1:05am later that night and again on NFL Network on Sun 8/16 at 9am CT and Mon 8/17 at 6am CT.
Speaking of scheduling your DVRs, the 2008 Houston Texans NFL Yearbook is scheduled to air on 8/20 at 12:30am CT on ESPN2.

I'm excited, too. I'm obviously excited to see how Cushing plays, but I'll probably be watching our secondary play the most closely.
I am excited and scared at the same time. Yeah, it is the first pre-season game, but if they look bad, then I have a feeling panic will set in.
Same theory with EZS, I'll will be looking at Glover and Brice. In a way, I hope the defense stays generic, nothing elaborate to show on film.

It'll be great to see how all the guys do in a real practice game. with 80 guys to evaluate, should be plenty to look at.

does anyone remember that site that showed you what games are being broadcast where? Does it work for the pre-season? I might have to be out of town Sat. evening.

No dice on preseason games. I would assume, unless they are on SNF/MNF/ESPN, they are pretty local.

It doesn't look like they post for preseason.
If you have NFL Network, they are re-broadcasting (and in some cases broadcasting live) all of the preseason games. Best thing I would do is a DVR search there or look at either the nfl.com or nfl network websites for more.

thanks guys....it's not being broadcasted locally in Beaumont that I can find. So, the family will just have to have their little celebration without me, or I'll DVR it or catch a re-broadcast.

The player with the most to prove on Saturday?
I'm going with Dan Orlovsky. He needs to have a good game to clearly separate himself from Grossman and show that the team can count on him if Matt Schaub goes down with injury.
So he's the one I think I want to see the most, too. I was really anticipating an extended look at Arian Foster, but he won't play due to his hamstring (http://www.inthebullseye.com/forums/showthread.php?t=708).

Hmm, lots to be watching this early in the year, I was thinking the 5 TE's, 3 who also snap would be most interesting, now I think watching our young CB's should be interesting as well. And I hope our DL is more disruptive than before.

Stephanie logged a blog post on her pre-game thoughts:
http://blogs.chron.com/texanschick/2009/08/houston_texans_kansas_city_preview.html
• How will the Texans offense do against the KC 3-4? I think KC may end up showing more stuff preseason to get more confidence in their young team, and get their fans more excited about the season. They've said that it is a priority for them to win (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2009/08/12/access_training_camp_blog__are_you_ready/) these games.
And aj_ has one too:
http://www.examiner.com/x-778-Houston-Texans-Examiner~y2009m8d11-An-early-preview-of-the-Texans-and-Chiefs
The Chiefs added some big names during the off-season, especially at linebacker with Mike Vrabel lining up at the right side outside linebacker spot and Zach Thomas at the left inside spot next to Derrick Johnson.
Imagine that... Derrick Johnson as a 3-4 linebacker.

He is still undersized and he is playing in the middle, not a place for the dynamic superman some of the poster have made him out to be.
IIRC Vilma was rookie of the year and traded when his team went to a 3-4, could DJ be heading down a similar path? Time will tell.

IIRC Vilma was rookie of the year and traded when his team went to a 3-4, could DJ be heading down a similar path? Time will tell.I think Johnson was a bit misused by the old regime there, so I don't know that the 3-4 would make it much worse, aside from the Chiefs apparently lacking a good NT. That won't help him.
As for being traded, Johnson would have been on the block earlier this year if at all (especially under a new HC and front office) since 2009 is his final under contract. No offense to Diles or Adibi, but looking ahead to 2010, I'd be very curious about him as a Will in the Texans defense. Very curious indeed.

agreed. 4-3 WLB is where he belongs and we are currently very unsettled at that spot. Now I would be more than happy if one of our guys really took ownership of that spot this season, but if not, I'd love to see us add a guy like Johnson in FA. He has great speed and would probably have a reasonable price tag. It would be far better than spending another high draft pick on a LB.

I've been looking at both KC and Denver and imagining who will shake out in the transition to a 3-4. The Broncos are trying 4-3 DEs like Elvis Dumerville, Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder as OLBs in a 3-4 defense where, honestly, I think they'll all suck. It would be great to take those three and Derrick Johnson and fit them into the Texans' defense. We'd have an instant solution to our WLB and speed-rushing DE needs. Keep an eye on the waiver wires.

I am hoping Adibi makes that his position. If not, I am more inclined to look at Sean Weatherspoon OLB Missouri or Sergio Kindle OLB Texas in the draft. They are projecting for that low 20's right now. And they both have 5 years less wear and tear on them.
DJ 6-3 242, can someone explain to me again why Capers thought this is small?
Vilma 6-1 230.
Demeco Ryans 6-1 248
Jaimie Sharper 6-3 239
Kailee Wong 6-2 250
And if I read the stat sheets correctly, DJ is going to be a Chief next year also.

KC has got their share of challenges with their conversion to the 3-4: Glenn Dorsey going from a 3-technique 4-3 DT to a 3-4 DE; DE Tambi Hall going to OLB, and 4-3 OLB Derrick Johnson going to the 3-4. Here's my question, why is the new GM in such a hurry to transision to that defense when his team is full of 4-3 talent who aren't really compatible with the 3-4 ? OK I know Parsels son-in-law is from NE where their base D is the 3-4, by why the big rush to change it all yesterday ? Defintely doesn't show much flexibility at all and reminds me of Kubiak dashing into the 4-3 when he got here when he had a 3-4 team on the roster ? Dang, he's not even a defensive coach, what's the problem ?

Texans stop the 3rd and 3. KC to punt.
Punt is downed inside the 5.

On another board, they were talking about a new rule for this year:
The "wedge" on kick returns is now outlawed. You can't have more than two blockers next to each other on kick returns. The next guy has to be several feet away. I think the net result will be far fewer long kickoff returns.
Texans kickoff. KC sets up shop about the 30.
Battle for two runs - one nice gain, the other stuffed. DelJuan hurt on the second but up and around....
3rd and 11. Screen not much. KC to punt.
Short punt give the Texans the ball at their own 43.

08-15-2009, 07:36 PM
Chris Brown could always run the ball. That wasn't in question. It is just that he can't stay healthy for a whole season. He would always give Tennesee like 3-4 huge games each year and be inactive for 5-8.
I almost regret seeing him out there playing well tonight because it is likely one fewer we get from him that counts.

KC doesn't do a whole lot... KC to punt...
JJ has a short return to the Texan 27...
1st down to AD on a quick hitter.... rain has let up..

I don't doubt that he can look better mentally and performance wise, I just don't think he throws a good ball. But Philip Rivers can't throw a spiral and he is effective. So hopefully Orlovsky can be effective.

I love that Bawin got that sack against KC's #1 pick last year and 2nd year starter, Brandon Albert. That little fake spin move he did locked Albert's legs all sorts of up as we saw. Definitely a created sack, not a hustle sack.

Postgame writeup.
http://www.inthebullseye.com/archive/2009/20090815.html
Pretty satisfying game for a preseason opener. I keep trying to remind myself that this is the Chiefs, who are opening a new era, with new leadership, a new quarterback, and a new defensive scheme. Even though this came on the road, the weather conditions removed the fans from the game, making it almost a neutral field.
But enough realism. Schaub went 7-7! Barwin got a sack! Okam was effective! Chris Brown walked off the field healthy! Hooray!
btw, fwiw, Grossman was apparently pulled due to a hamstring injury, not because he looked like ...well... Grossman.

Barwin's sack was nice, but his play against the run and his smarts in sniffing out screen plays and getting his hands up make me think he can be far more than a situational pass rusher eventually. He may be in his 2nd year at DE, but he is not a project. He's a football player. Just one whose many talents made it hard to find him the best position on the field.
And Bob, let me say that didn't see one ounce of Jason Babin in him.

And Bob, let me say that didn't see one ounce of Jason Babin in him.
I'll admit there was nothing Babinesque in that sack move (although it should be noted that Babin also had a sack in his first preseason game - his was a bull rush).
The best news is that there were no major injuries and what injuries there were did not happen to key players. Nobody's going on IR due to last night's game.
You really have to cross your fingers in bad conditions like that but the field held up remarkably well which tells me George Toma is still on the case there in KC.
Glover Quin is going to be a beast. Can't believe we got him in the 4th round! 4 Solo tackles last night. MIght he be best suited for that elusive safety spot?

I'm hoping they give us more information soon on the injuries to Winston and Adibi. Winston's sprained ankle doesn't sound like it should be more than 2-3 weeks max, but depending on the severity of Adibi's broken finger, that could keep him out for the first week or two of the season....
Edit: Just read that Eric Winston posted on his twitter page that his ankle is fine and that he's "surprised it was even mentioned", so thats definitely good news.

Defensive players should not miss a game for a broken finger. Honestly most don't miss a game for a broken hand and I know more than a few have played through broken arms in recent years. Adibi may miss a preseason game just to be careful, but I wouldn't if I was him and I was trying to win a job.
