View Full Version : [Week 1 Opponent Scouting] News on the Jets.
Appears that Shawn Ellis may also be suspended for week 1. That would be in addition to the suspension for OLB Calvin Pace. We've had our share of injuries and M*A*S*H units that we have rolled out. I am not going to shed a tear if we get a depleted Jets defense.

Did anyone else watch them play this week?
The defense is much improved and Ryans has them blitzing from all directions. We will need Pitts and Myers back to full speed.
I love they way Ryans schemes a defense. They overload and create mismatches, the way a defense should be run. They never heard of Bend but Don't Break. They attack, attack attack, how fun is that to watch.
They are not going to be a push over.

I watched the first quarter of the Jets game. They looked like an aggressive, attacking defense, but they'll need the players to make it happen. The Jets were missing Darrelle Revis in the game, so having him back would help them a lot.
Offensively, Sanchez played only a little, but he looked very good with time in the pocket. The tight end, Dustin Keller, is a big target for him, so having Cushing back is going to make that a key match-up.
I think they are entirely beatable if the Texans avoid mistakes. They have the better talent and will be playing at home.

I guess everyone has this link, but here you can find all the preseason game times and scores http://www.nfl.com/schedules#Week
I watched some of game with Jets and Rams last night. I agree with PK that their defensive front 7 looked pretty good including their backups. they were in the Rams backfield all game long, didn't stop atttacking. Their first team offense and defense pretty well dominated the Rams in the early preseason.

I think the RBs will be just as important. Two early sacks were the direct result of the Rams #2RB blowing blitz pickups. Whoever is at RB better be ready to do some pass blocking.

One of those two sacks I thought the Center messed up, but your correct our RBs will need to be up on their blocking schemes.

I've got this on the DVR, I'll check it out and post some reactions, but were the Rams able to get any pressure on Sanchez? That's the key to freakin a rookies game out of whack.

I dunno how many 3-4s we played against last year, but did we one-time do an effective job against one of them ? And I hardly think what the Chiefs were running Satfurday was a serious preview of what the Jets will throw at us next month ? Well this is now a vet OLine and Kubiak has stated that he thinks it's a strength of the team, ao assuming Pitts & White are ready to go for the season-opener were're going to see just how good they are because they will probably be seriously tested ?

Off the top of my head, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Miami.

Cleveland.
Well, not that it's a surprise, info has been leaked that Sanchez will start opening day.
From the AP, via chron.com - http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/6587825.html
"Sanchez, the fifth overall draft pick out of Southern California, beat out veteran Kellen Clemens with a solid training camp and will be under center for the Jets’ season opener at Houston on Sept. 13. The person requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the decision. "
Not sure how many of you watched it Monday, but he was harrassed against Baltimore. From what I saw, he didn't have much time, but when he did, he was sporadic. The 2nd "almost" interception hit the Baltimore guy square in the hands, but he dropped it, otherwise, it would be have 2 pick six.
We need to get after this guys a$$. I think we WILL be able to do so, cause some disruption, and create turnover opportunities.
17 days and counting......

We shoudl have 11 guys playing Leon Washington everytime he is on the field. He was all they had the other night. They have very little on the outside.

I'm a little surprised they named Sanchez the starter before the conclusion of the 3rd preseason game, though guess this isn't official and they would still have some wiggle room ?

There's a number of things working in his favor:
1. The Jets are a running-heavy team
2. Sanchez was the 5th pick in the draft (making 5th pick money)
3. His compeition is Kellen Clemens
There wasn't much in the way of this declaration.
Rex saw our run defense and probably decided that he did not need a QB to beat us.

Sanchez didn't look half bad against the Giants on Saturday night.
http://www.nfl.com/videos/new-york-jets/09000d5d8124044f/Jets-27-Giants-25
13/20, 149 yds, 1 TD in a little more than a half of the game played.
Sanchez took advantage a couple times of finding wide open receivers in blown pass coverages by the Giants. He did show a little poise in avoiding the rush though.
I think the Texans ought to really benefit with the suspensions to the Jets pass defense though. Should be a fun game to watch.

For me the most intriguing player in that game wasn't Vick but a veteran NFL player at DE for the Eagles who they report might have a shot at making the Phillys 53-man roster. Some ole, well-traveled NFL dude by the name of Jason Babin.
Sanchez and the Jets offense were in just one series as they marched down the field impressively for a TD (mostly on the rook QBs passes), and the Eagles did the same against the Jets. Difference was the Jets played there starters in the first series (both sides of the ball), while the Eagles played
no starters at all in the game.

Sanchez looked pretty darn good. Much more comfortable that one would expect for a rookie.

The New York Jets have announced they have placed DE Shaun Ellis and LB Calvin Pace on the Reserve/Suspended list.

Texans 4.5 pt favorites (http://www.madduxsports.com/nfl-odds.php) over the Jets. (for entertainment purposes only, of course).
Eww, Texans history not so good when favorited... Let's hope they start getting over these types of things..
The bookies not showing much confidence in the Texans against what will be a rookie qb for the Jets IMOG. 4.5? What kind of odds are those? Why didn't they just say by a FG?

They base the spread not only on game conditions and aspects but also where the money is going or expected to go. Also giving the half point avoids a push where they have to return all bets (I don't know if they keep a small percentage in a push).
(I don't know if they keep a small percentage in a push).
They keep the "juice", typically, 10%....at least that is what I "heard" ;)
Honestly, I figured we would open up at about -7 to -7.5. Based on what I have seen, it will probably climb up to that by kick off (currently at -5.5).
Bottom line, we SHOULD roll. Good at home, 2 key DEF players back in the mix. I am not too worried about the running game for NY, I am worried about L Washington on those damn screen plays we seem to have an issue with. I can just see Barwin now, thinking he is going to get a big sack in game one........dump screen.......Dammmmmit!

Looks like the Texans-Jets game will be on CBS throughout all parts of Texas except areas that border New Mexico. The game will also be broadcast throughout the Northeast and Southern California. If you live elsewhere, it's Sunday Ticket or a sports bar for you.

Keep in mind, you oddsmakers, that 90% of the country only know of us what they saw in the Vikings game where a major storyline was our gimpy quarterback.

point spreads are only meant to ensure that the odds makers get plenty of action for both teams. As long as the bets are about equal for two teams they come out ahead. The only way they lose is if way more people bet on one team and they win.
As a general rule the home team gets three points, so Vegas only really likes us by a point and a half. Considering the Jets are expected to have a strong running game (against our apparently weak run defense) and their defense is expected to be pretty good as well 4.5 is about what I would expect.
I WOULD like to see what kind of odds I could get for the Jets running a screen play on 3rd and long....or an over under on total screens run by the Jets. I am really worried about screens. We've shown we are susceptible to them, and it's a great way to slow down a pass rush and help protect a rookie QB.
For those who can't make it to the game, you will be please to hear that we are going to actually have DECENT announcers for the game. Found this via Paul K's blog: http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth

Here’s who you’ll be hearing Thursday and Sunday if you’re watching an AFC South game on TV:
Tennessee at Pittsburgh, Thursday 7:30 p.m. ET: NBC, Al Michaels, Chris Collinsworth
Jacksonville at Indianapolis, Sunday at 1 p.m. ET: CBS, Kevin Harlan, Solomon Wilcots
N.Y. Jets at Houston, Sunday at 1 p.m. ET: CBS, Jim Nantz, Phil Simms
Sure will be nice to be rid of that damn Wilcots jacka$$ when I watch the replay.....

Interesting is that both fan bases expect their team to win this game.
