Texans agree to terms with McCain

The chron.com is reporting:
The Texans have signed their first draft choice, sixth-round pick Brice McCain from Utah.

McCain, a cornerback, signed a four-year contract worth $1.8 million, including a signing bonus of $101,750.

McCain was taken by the Texans in the sixth round.


According to my records this is earliest signing of a draft pick during the Rick Smith era. Last year he did sign 2 players in June, Dominique Barber (June 19) and Alex Brink (June 26).

They all have to get signed, so the earlier the better. I admit I was thinking when I looked at the header I was hoping for Dunta, Demeco or Owen.

4 years for a 6th round pick? they must like him pretty good. that seems a little longer than average. anyone know what the standard is for these late-round guys?

This says a lot for Rick Smith and the work his scouts do. He expects all 7 of his draft picks to make the squad. I remember when Casserly was GM he would say, "I don't expect 3rd rounders to make it anyway"!? :mad:

I don't have specifics on the contract (yet at least), but the Texans have agreed to 4-yr contracts with other picks, presumably to push a small amount of cap dollars out to a future year. The fourth year is often voidable by the player, accelerating the extra bonus proration into year 3.

I keep trying to think doing this might have something to do with free agency rules, but I guess not if the last year is voidable anyway.

Regardless, I wouldn't read too much into the fourth year just yet.
