View Full Version : Draft watch party
Just checking in to see what everyone is doing to watch the draft. I have went to the first few Texan Draft parties, but now that we pick later I find it hard to hang out there. I have watched from the comfort of home the past few years flipping between ESPN and NFLN.
I was thinking of going to Nick's Place to watch this year. Thought it might be cool if the board members could get together somewhere.

My son has a baseball game where I'm the asst head coach. Starts at 11am... ugh. Our local little league obviously does not have the NFL draft in mind! :p
Getting together sounds good though even though I'm not sure I can make it, at least for the start. Any place with free wi-fi and free refills/cheap beer/good snacky foods would work imo.
I am supposed to meet a couple of my friends at Nick's so that is where I will be. I'll drop you a PM with my number and if you can make it buzz me and you will know who to look for.

Keith, unless the Texans trade up, you probably won't miss their pick. Expect the first round to take 6-7 hours and we are in the middle so our pick probably won't come up until about three hours into the show. That should give you time coach your son's game, go home, and still have a chance to go somewhere and watch the Texans make their pick or trade down.

Actually, since the NFL cut the time to select in the first round from 15 minutes down to 10 minutes, last year's first round only too like three and a half hours.
I'll drop you a PM with my number and if you can make it buzz me and you will know who to look for. Sounds good.

Plus, doesn't the draft start at 2 this year? I think they were talking about that on the radio earlier this week. Figure 8 or 9 minutes a pick, which should put the Texans at about 3:30 or so. Not enough time for you Keith?

Not enough time for you Keith? That could work, but it'll be close. I'll be done with baseball and related matters sometime after 1:30-ish. I'm also probably an hour or so away, with my mom visiting that weekend, another obligation for my son that afternoon that hopefully can be taken care of, an annual carnival at the church... ugh, even still, I'm hopeful I can make it work. It's the freaking Draft!
Where is Nick's?
Rocky Ridge, Off Westheimer maybe a mile or two inside the belt. I suck at directions, but that is the general area. If you were coming from the belt Rockey Ridge would be on the right hand side.
1560 is doing their draft show from there.

What channel is the better of the two for draft watch between NFLN and ESPN?
I splurged before football season with the 200 channel package (I dont watch much TV and cheap when it comes to my cable/dish) on my dish so I actually have NFLN for the draft now.

Just off Gessner, got it. I live a few blocks away, so I might be inclined to hang out.

NFLn is better IMO. Kiper can get real old.

I don't think that ESPN does the 2nd day, only the 1st. Therefore, I will skip between the two on day 1 simply so I don't have to listen to one group of people for an extended period of time. It also depends on if Mayock has the ability to discuss the player being drafted and who might be a good pick for the next team (i.e. keep focused on what's happening) or if the staff wanders off onto gossip and philosophy or whatever. I remember a couple of years ago when Mayock and Schefter got into a little pissing contest when Moss got traded. While somewhat entertaining, it wasn't why I tuned in.
Day two is usually on ESPN2. I really like watching the draft, not sure why, but it is like the anticipation of who is going where and who we might choose.

I doubt I can be there on Day 1 (depends on start time for work that day) but if there's a gathering at Nick's on day 2 I can make it.

Keith. The draft doesn't start until 3pm this year so I doubt you will miss anything.

If Keith will commit, I might just drive down from Austin to do this. I'm still mulling it over, debating whether I want to drive down Saturday, stay overnight, take in an Astros game on Sunday and then drive home. Gas is still cheap so I might just do this.
Do we know if Nick's will have the tv volume up? I'd hate to be there and then have to listen to 1560 or some live band while we squint at the ticker on the tv screens to find out what is happening. If there's a trade, how will we know what it was?

Okay, things are coming together. I think I ought to be able to get there about 2:30pm, maybe sooner if stuff falls into place. Either way, I'm planning on being there. I called Nick's, and they said they had free wi-fi, too. I'd hate to leave the forums high and dry!

1560 is doing their draft show from there. I imagine the place will be packed then. What time are you getting there? Can you hold a spot at the table for me?
Where is Nick's?
Link to their site (http://www.nicksplacehouston.com/) - it has a map. Caution... there is another Nick's Sports Bar in west Houston, so be sure to hit up the right one.
I am planning on getting there about 1:30-2:00 or so. Yes, I'll hold a spot for you and if Bob is going to come, then I'll be sure we get a place for him as well.
You received my PM? Give me a call when you are on your way, and I'll tell you who to look for.

I was hoping to attend this, but found out last night from the wife that the neighbor across the street wants to have a surprise B-Day party for her husband at some restaurant. Guess the frickin' surprise is on me!!!! With the draft starting late I may miss the Texans pick now!! I guess can DVR it, but it's obviously not the same. :(

I had to miss the draft last year and thought it was the worst thing in the world. But, in the end, it turned out to be not so bad at all - almost to the point where I wouldn't even mind if I had to miss it again.
The only drawback I found was that I didn't have as good of a grasp on what other teams did in the draft. It ended up taking a considerable amount more reading to really grasp what went on with the other 31 teams.

I'm about 80% sure I'm going. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do with Sunday. I'm leaning towards Astros-Brewers but the part I hate is that most of the picks will be done on Day 2 and the talking heads are going to largely ignore them while regurgitating what happened on Day 1. So unless you are following the ticker, you don't know what your own team is doing.
So I'm going to sit at a sports bar and watch the first two rounds when important rounds like 3 and 4 will be missed which is where the good organizations separate themselves from the bad ones.

Okay, i'm set for this. I plan to leave Austin around 10 a.m. so I can get there a little after 2 p.m. Whoever is the first ones there, tell the waitress/hostess that we are the "In The Bullseye Draft Party" so that anyone who comes knows where to how to find us. I'll be wearing a Texans t-shirt and a Longhorns cap (one advantage to being a guy is your clothes don't have to match).

If I can remember to tomorrow, I'll bring some shirts with me in case anyone wants to hit me up at Nick's. I'm out of 2XL and small though... plenty of XL.

I'm gonna try to make it out. I've gotta ush at a wedding at noon (that's what ushers do, right? ush?), and then hit up the reception. It should be a short ceremony (thank god), and it's a cash bar at the reception, so we'll see how it goes. I definitely want me a T-shirt, so barring me baggin a bridesmaid, I should be able to get there by the time we pick (or trade down!). I'll look for you guys.

If the wedding cake tastes good, steal us a few pieces of that while you're there. I'm reading some very mixed reviews about the food at Nick's.

Alright, I have a small bag of shirts ready. First come, first serve! I am still thinking I'll get there around 2:30p.
I'm down to the last L, but I have plenty of XL. And small donations to the site are welcome. ;)
Honestly, we're about $150ish in the hole, which isn't bad for a little site like this, but it'd be nice to build a cushion for October's semi-annual dues. Anyone unable to make it to Nick's but still interested in contributing, please click here (http://www.inthebullseye.com/kindness.html) for details on how to help and send me an email with any questions or concerns. Thanks!

Let's step up and donate, folks! Keith's put together a great site, which I'm sure consumes a lot of his time. Let's not make him absorbe the costs too.

I stayed til about 8:30 and stayed in town to go to the Astros game the next day so I haven't had much computer contact until today. I enjoyed my time there (food could be better) and meeting everybody. I watched the Texans' third-rounder as I was checking out of my room at Super 8 and watched the fourth-rounders while eating at the 5-7 Grille inside Minute Maid Park (skip it unless you like overpriced, undercooked stadium-vendor food).
Each time, my reaction was "who's he?". I kept waiting for a running back or a safety. I heard who else we drafted while driving home on KTRH but, again, I had no idea who they were.
If I were to give the draft a grade, I'd have to give it a C or a C+ because I really don't know what many of these guys are capable of. Cushing and Barwin, the only two I had heard of before draft day, are both guys who could fit in well but I'll need to see them on the field a few times before deciding if they are players.
Keith mentioned we declined to trade down but, if the offers were as weak as the ones the Browns accepted, that's probably a good thing although I didn't see a pressing need to take Cushing when our time came up.
