Only, it's not a player:

Good to see him back, even in some nebulous, not quite defined capacity.

Bruce Matthews, who played 14 of his 19 seasons for the Oilers and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has been hired by the Texans as an offensive assistant coach.

Matthews, who has known coach Gary Kubiak since they were teammates at the 1983 Hula Bowl, begins his coaching career at the ground level.
“We’re thrilled to have Bruce be part of our staff,” Kubiak said today. “Not only was he was one of the greatest players in history, I think the world of him as a person, too. I think it’s a great thing for the fans of this city to have one of their own be part of our organization.

“Bruce said he wanted to get into coaching and do the grunt work so he can learn from the ground level. We’ll give him a lot of things to do, including a lot of work with our running game preparations. We’re really excited about giving him this opportunity.”

If there's one thing this team knows, it's nepotism.

While I have nothing against this at all, seems like a crowded coaching staff. Reading between the lines, I wonder if Gibbs has indicated that this year would be his last and Kubes wanted to bring in someone who Gibbs could tutor in his last year.

The best learning from the best. I can see that.

Benton would be the most likely to take over Gibbs role when he leaves, Matthews would then be in line to take over Benton's role.

Only fly in the ointment is Gibbs has retired before and found out he hated it. I can see him staying for a little while, especially now his son and his family are going to be here.

Useless stat of the day:

Bruce Matthews is exactly 1 week older than Kubiak.

New DLine coach Koller's title is "Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Line" and he's listed above new DC Bush at the Texans official website (obviously because of the Asst HC title) in the complete list of Texans coachs. Actually he an old man Gibbs are only behind Kubiak in the list and obviously that order has compensation/protocol meaning.
I dunno but guess that means Koller is getting bigger bucks than Bush and indicates how highly the organization values his hire (as they do the senior Gibbs) just as a DLine coach ?

I doubt Kollar is getting more than Bush at this point. He is most likely one of the highest paid position coaches, along with Gibbs. The Asst HC title has more to do with the fact he was still under contract in Buffalo and we had to offer him a promotion on paper.

IMO different teams handle the Asst HC position differently, in SF was Singletary the LB coach only, or did he have a bigger input into the game plan than another LB coach in the league?

I think the Asst HC title is used to give veteran position coaches some higher prestige, and it makes that coach all but untouchable to other teams.

Now if we had a star QB...Hmmm, how about Cutler?

Yep, injury ridden Schaub was a nice transition away from David Carr now let's go after a playmaker.

Dead serious.

When Schaub goes down (again) we will have Patrick Ramsey in there. Picture Rosenstein but worse. Speculation that the Titans have thrown their stinkin name into the hat and they would do it just because Bud Adams truly hates Houston imo.

The "little diabetic that could" threw for 4500 yards with what, 6 different running backs in 2008? That many different RB's will screw up blitz pick ups and other assignments so I'd say he did pretty good all things considering...and he's only 25.

Yeah, I'm serious.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about that. This would be a clear example of what happens when you live near Denver and listen to their smack so much that your brain actually begins to disintigrate.

Ramsey is on the Broncos.
